The Rise of Platformers

One such genre is pretty much responsible for starting it all with a certain Italian plumber for a hero. That's right, platforming games were once the reigning champions. Thankfully, they're coming back, and in a huge way! (3DS, GameCube, Nintendo DS, PC, PS Vita, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Wii U, Xbox, Xbox 360)

Mario Bros. 3, World, 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1-2 and 3D Land
Sonic Colors, Generation and Adventure 2 Battle
Sonic Advance 1-3 and Rush games
Kirby Super Star and Return To Dreamland
Donkey Kong Country 1-3 and Returns
Wario Land 1-3
Yoshi Island
Banjo Tooie

To be fair, they did "die" for a while. Platformers occupied something like half of all games, ever, in the NES, SNES,PS1 and PS2 eras... and then suddenly the genre (like so many others) died.

It took years for the PS3 and 360 to get any platformers, and even now that they have, most of the better ones are HD ports of older games.

Hell, even the Wii didn't get too many platformers.

Which is odd, considering Mario Galaxy is essentially the best platformer ever made.

Of course, the PSP and--most especially--the DS both got a fair number of platformers.

Rayman Origins is incredible. The music, the visuals, the game is fantastic and can be found for around 10$. No excuse not to play it!

A renaissance of platformers may be upon us. Recently we saw the releases of Sly Cooper: Theives in Time and NSMBU but more are on the horizon. We have the new 3D Mario for the Wii U, Sonic Lost World which actually looks really good. We'll have Knack on the PS4. And Rare may even revive Banjo for the X1.

Also can't wait to see what the new 3D Mario is going to be like. We'll find out in less than two days. Can't freaking wait!
