New nonprofit hopes to help sufferers of anxiety and depression know they're not alone. Andrew Testerman spoke with founder Russ Pitts about the project.
The Escapist was dead. Much of the site’s former glory, from its idiosyncratic content creators to its lively forums, was dormant. GamerGate and its far-right ilk had damaged the forums, and the site seemed to be living on borrowed time. Until last month, that remained true.
OnlySP recently spoke to the outlet's new Editor-in-Chief to find out about its strategy going forward.
Late last month, OnlySP’s parent company Enthusiast Gaming, in collaboration with Russ Pitts, announced the purchase and revival of The Escapist—a formerly well-regarded gaming site that, in later days, has been seen as a hotbed of political engagement. In the post announcing the news, Pitts said that one of his goals as Editor-in-Chief of the website would be to “leave politics at the door,” and that claim sparked a debate about the value and relevance of social topics within video games. Sources commenting on the reopening confused Pitts’s statement with a claim for apoliticism, which was never written in the original post, and the two ideas should be be conflated. Choosing not to discuss politics is not the same as not having an opinion, and, indeed, for any media outlet to claim the latter would be ignoble.
You can just not buy the game if you don’t agree with it. Just don’t complain when you have CoD 20 or spend money on new skins on Fortnite. Put your money where your mouth is.
That is an extreme oversimplification of the issue being discussed. This article isnt just about the politics IN games, it was brought about because of the journalistic side and the politics around WRITING about those games and stances taken by the MEDIA about those games.
We are really talking about peoples ability to voice an opinion ABOUT the games and the politics of the game.
"That is an extreme oversimplification of the issue being discussed."
simplified or not, he's still correct when it comes to consumerism.
if you don't like something don't buy it and move along.
As far as I’m concerned, you can say what you want about a video game. But you can’t do it without consequence sometimes. In the US the government cannot prohibit 99% of speech. But that doesn’t mean I (someone not constitutionally restricted) can’t say they disagree with someone else’s opinion.
@Sampsonon
I dont think you fully grasp what the article is about. Its not about whether to buy a game or not. Its about "Can games be non political" and "Can game journalists be non political" which has ZERO to do with just dont buy the game if you dont like it.
@frosty, sorry but I disagree. There are plenty of things in life that are apolitical and should stay that way. The less politics the better as far as I'm concerned.
@Gh05t: yeah, i know what the article is talking about. what it will always come down to is if you don't like something then stay away from it.
example: i hate the Opera and would never buy a ticket to see one.
you will never see me complaining about who is starring in a show because i couldn't give a rats ass about the topic.
what it all boils down to is you either like something, then play it, or you don't, then don't play it.
this includes the media and gamers alike.
just because a dev decides they want to have a gay couple in a game doesn't imply they have an agenda because the game takes place in the world we live in, even though it has turned to $hit.
gay developers, directors, actors, doctors, musicians, bus drivers, ect.. are real and shouldn't have to be questioned as to why they are here, or in a stupid game just because some bigots have small minds.
so having a game that shows people from a real world, even though fictional, that is like our own shouldn't have to make anyone justify real world characters like the lesbian couple down the hall.
sometimes it just is, the same way having a mixed race couple kissing just is.
this whole topic is embarrassing, and people need to grow the F-ck up!
Exactly, if the artists wants to express their thoughts that way, who are you to tell them what to do?
If you don't like it don't buy it. It's easy.
Then why you bitching about COD or Fortnite? don't buy the game or the MT. You are also bitching about what other people use their money for.
The one and only game Im hyped for atm is TLOUP2!!!!!
Unless new IP from ND or Persona 6 comes out, my real hype is only on this game. Please make the game good!!!!!!!
A good game is fun to play, not political. If I want politics, I watch the news.
is chess political? no, its fun, strategy. sure you could make it political by attaching meaning to each piece and the setting of the board, but the game itself is meant to be fun.
same with Pong, pac man, Mario, Zelda etc all the classic games are just that- games. you play them for fun.
making games will be the downfall of gaming. they will cease being games and become a tool to brainwash you. and if games have political content, politicians will weaponise them, or claim that they are weapons.
its already happening, with games being blamed for the ills of society.
nobody would blame Mario for a mass shooting, but GTA sure.
I would argue that some of these titles aren't even games anymore, interactive entertainment maybe... but a game is, or in my opinion should be, innocent fun.
a 'game' packed with political messages or agendas is a corrupt one, in my opinion.
Yeap I agree. That's why I'm looking forward to have fun and unforgettable experience in TLOUP2.
Two people kissing shouldn't even be a political issue. No one should have to justify love.
I’m still trying to understand why people are upset about Ellie being lesbian. Mass Effect had many moments with lesbian and/or gay characters and most people believe that series was a masterpiece (which I agree with).
I think most of them are fake outrage coming from the other camp. Games from ND will get hate all the time. People just dont want to admit they are one of if not the best game developer in the world.
And plenty of people had issue with it. I didn't like the fact in ME3 and Andromeda that you can't get rid of the flirt option with the same sex so you're always having to be sure you don't accidentally hit it if you don't want to(Andromeda in particular). Give the option to specify your character is straight.
Gay moments in ME were just that: moments. They were unconnected to the overall plot whereas with TLOU2 sexual orientation likely going to be a a major driving force.
There’s so much more to this issue than just that...you really need to look into it.
Robingaming did an excellent, objective commentary on this issue:
https://youtu.be/sZwYCgNkmF...
Despite it all, ND is still king for now. Looking forward to TLOU2!
@rivaldoo777:
UC getting hate because it set a graphic standard, isn't on Xbox/PC or a Tomb Raider clone is no where near a player taking the role of a gay character who will likely do gay things over the course of the game. How the setting - people - around the character is going to react to them, cause I really doubt a mushroom zombie if it's next meal muff dives or not.
IMO they threw it in there to garner attention. Like hey look at me we're really progressive. Is it serious enough not to buy the game, I doubt it, but I don't think it was necessary to make her a lesbian. IMO her love interest could have been a dude, and it would not have an impact on the game. IMO they're doing just to do it, and get that attention.
Because it feels forced? The DLC which came for TLOU 1 brought nothing to the story other than "Oh she's a Lesbian" Which is kind of a shame if you think about it, Ellie being immune and all, might've actually been a good thing for humanity.
So maybe that's why she's a lesbian and they'll bring it around and focus on that aspect?
Also, games and politics can be separated. Doesn't mean they have to if a creator wishes for it, but don't make it feel forced.
You and people like you don't understand because you won't leave your little comfort zone bubble. Robin Gaming (Who if you are a true fan of the uncharted series and play their online will know who that is, he is featured on the Uncharted TV series ever since it was started) Made a perfect video explaining exactly why it's a problem.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...
If you are even going to talk about the subject you need to watch his video. I'm tired of people like you simplifying it it the worst way possible "I don't see why people have a problem with Ellie being gay" As if you couldn't be missing the point anymore, I don't care who is gay or what sexuality anyone is, that's not the point. The point is agenda pushing and identity politics. Did Naughty Dog ever release a trailer for Uncharted where the only cut-scene shown was Nate kissing Elena? No. Why? There wasn't a straight agenda to push. The Last of Us story DLC was nothing but a "hey look Ellie is gay" I was soooo let down. Why? Not because she's gay, I couldn't care less, but because it was so short and didn't add anything besides an agenda to push. Ellie being gay doesn't make her a more interesting character, the story wasn't interesting because we already knew how it was going to end, she told us that in the story. Literally the only thing it added was "oh shes gay" also as I said before, it was short. Honestly I could rant for days but Robin Gaming sums it up perfectly, just watch his video. I love Naughty Dog and their games, just focus on making good games, nothing else.
@Sono
Sounds like you need to get back into your comfort bubble. Anything you play, listen to, or watch is pushing some kind of agenda. Agenda isn’t a bad term. If you don’t like it then don’t play, listen, or watch. Just know that agendas are everywhere in your life whether you like it or not
That is a super stretch Armstrong reach there sniper.
A minor can not give consent because they are not an adult. Simples!
And @FunAndGun, it's not a stretch.
We're told the LGBT crowd feels a certain way and many claim they were born that way so how they feel should be what we use to decide on.
Pedophiles say the same thing.
I'm pointing out the flawed thinking of "no one should have to justify love". There is right and there is wrong. What is right and what is wrong depends on point of view.
For me, both are a sin. Now granted yes whereas I merely disagree with the LGBT crowd, I believe pedophiles should be executed along with murderers and rapists.
One would have to be a raging idiot to think pedophilia and homosexuality are moronally equivalent. Homosexuality doesn't require preying on children.
Your mistaking sex with love, love is two consenting partners. Pedophiles are generally taking advantage of an underage child.
But congrats on jumping off the the deep end with extremes
For those that state this is a stretch, a large portion of the lgbt were molested sexually abused in some way when they were young, so there is definitely a correlation there. Pedophile groups are starting to push their own agenda, and they're trying to get support from the lgbt community. I think we've gone too deep into this lol IMO it's all for attention, they know many gamers will end up making peace with this, and it won't cost them any sales. Naughty Dog is smart, they know making Ellie gay won't have an impact on their sales, however having a male protagonist character be gay would have killed the series. It was a safe way to bring the LGBT movement to the game.
@combatcash
What you said isn't even true, read some actual research from actual psychologists instead of just parroting propaganda.
Child abuse is a terrible thing and it happens to both gay and straight young people.
It's unfortunate that misinformation so often used to discredit things and that people just repeat them with out question.
didn't you know? if anyone kisses besides a man and a woman it's a "political statement".
Or if you have a black guy in star wars it's "forced upon us".
small minds all.
Ellie
"every guy in this room is staring at you right now."
"maybe they're staring at you?"
Ellie
"..... no...."
"maybe they're jealous of you?"
Ellie
"...no, just a girl......not a threat"
"oh Ellie.... i think they should be terrified of you."
AND BOY! they sure are jealous and terrified, aren't they? lmfao! :)
ND, keep making the kind of game you want to.
Including homosexuality in every new movie and game very much is a political statement. If they stuck with actual demographics, it would feature in maybe one out of every ten.
@Cobra951: "Including homosexuality in every new movie and game very much is a political statement."
every new movie and game?
"demographics"? show me stats please.
1. show the percentage of gay and lesbians in games and movies in the last 10 yrs.
2. show the percentage of gay people in America.
if not i will, but i thought i would spare you the embarrassment.
ah!! F it
"GLAAD released its annual study of LGBTQ representation on television this week, and for the most part, the findings are positive. The study found that 2017 was the best year ever for LGBTQ characters on television, with 6.4 percent of characters on broadcast prime-time TV identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer."
6.4%? everyone run to the hills.
"In U.S., Estimate of LGBT Population Rises to 4.5%"
gaming would be in the same range or less.
looks about right.
stop crying, you still have 94% of everything.
But it's not. No gays in GoW as far as I could tell, or in the last 10 games I've bought. None in Thor or any of the movies I've seen recently. Maybe some of the TV shows, but I'm not on the hunt for gay fictional characters so...
The fact is you see it because you hate it and you need to get over it. Gay people exist and are apart of our stroy, you not liking them is your problem, not ours.
love.
who are we to judge?
we love who we love, whether others think t's ok or not.
True, no one should justify love. However when you make a lesbian kiss the main focus of the most highly anticipated game in recent times, especially in times where the LQBTQWXYZ agenda is pushed like crazy, now THAT will rub people the wrong way because it is done to shove an agenda down your throat.
"True, no one should justify love."
yet your next statement is meant to make the developers justify why they have a same sex couple falling in love.
you contradicted yourself all in one paragraph....... are you Trump? lol
They aren't just two people, they're young girls.
This is pushing homosexuality onto young people.
No but it is very interesting, notice how they didn't have the story revolve around to gay male figures. They are still pandering to their audience but only giving an illusion of breaking new ground politically. Gay male characters still are the ones who have the stigma in gaming and won't be presented like Ellie as the main character in a game, they will be relegated to optional side romances not impacting the story. I just don't see how a game would sell too well but it would be very interesting if naughty dog reversed this for the next game with males and how It would reflect both critically on gaming sites vs sales figures.
Explain your argument then. CoD has politics and so does Battlefield and practically every major shooter that isn’t Battle Royals. People just need to stop complaining and just not buy the game. Rather unfortunate because you will likely miss out on many top notch games.
War politics and social politics are way to far apart to claim them as the same. Unless youre talking about both the games going full feminist?
Ok, how many games aren’t political in the slightest? I don’t get what you’re trying to argue
All Nintendo games I know of aren't political in the slightest.
@air
I’m arguing that anything can be made about politics. Battle Royals has guns in and this can be connected to politics. If a character is straight it can be connected to social politics. If you don’t like it don’t say anything. Don’t buy the game, the glorious ness of capitalism is that you can be heard without speaking a word!
Joker doesn't know why WW2 was fought. Here's a hint, basically everything we argue over in the US right now.
RememberThe357, youre telling me WWII was fought because of abortion, feminism, and social identities? You retarded?
@joker he means identity politics. Thats what happened in nazi Germany in the 1930's and in the Soviet Union and communist China and was responsible for over 100 million dead people last century. Its the same schtick just a different flavour and is the consequence of the extreme left wings current attacks on the 'patriarchy' and why there is a massive schism in the US currently. He's anything but retarded fgs.
You picked the "low hanging fruit". Of course shooting games are about politics, war happens because of politics. But there are plenty of games that are not about politics. uncharted, tomb raider, flower, mario in general, splatoon, dragonball z games, gran tourismo, forza, madden "nearly all sports games for that matter with storylines", etc etc.
Politics affects all aspects of our lives so in games based in realism it seems like it would be difficult to avoid such topics.
You again? How recent are you talking? The original Metal Gear? Or maybe the original Metal of Honor? Or any GTA game? Or any period of time that gaming g has existed, because there have been political themes in this genre since it grew past Pong.
Sounds like you need a cacoon for you and all your Mario games.
Almost every story is going to be influenced by the culture and society for the time that it was written.
There is also nothing that says that one can't escape while also having a relevant story.
Its when things are done in shallow ways, and the politics take over the story that it becomes a problem. There are times where a story is meant to address a strong political issue, but for the most part, we really don't see that in gaming as much, and we tend to get the shallow preaching which tries to make its point without taking all sides into consideration.
It's annoying. Games like God of War show us that a game can be deep and meaningful without the writers pushing their own personal politics.
So what if they want to? You trying to pigeonhole what this medium is and can be? If someone's vision of a game is to do this, then I don't see why not?
No. I'm trying to prevent bullies in leftist groups from pigeonholing the whole industry into a mouthpiece for their agendas.
One dev making a game that might touch on some issues relevant today = pigeonholing the whole industry. Got it. Also, I'm a leftist so I see nothing wrong with it in the first place. What argument have you got against the inclusion in the first place? I can understand not wanting it cause it can be seen as forced and pandering but everything else I've heard is "I don't like it", in which case, oh well. Don't buy it.
Wow, so every game should be like GoW? Maybe a writer wants a gay character, that is his choice because he is writing the piece. Stop being a victim, my god, you are so fragile.
I don't know man that gay character in the Red Rising series really sank it for me... LOL
GOW felt like it was trying so hard to be the TLOU to me tho. And btw, the character development was the best in GOW series but compared to TLOU, It felt forced and wasn't emotional at all.
can't something just be? why do people think that having two women kissing (to which i believe is the most passionate moments in video game history) is a political statement?
why is it that if something isn't straight and white it's someone making a statement?
the world is made up of straight, gay, bi, white, black and every shade in between.
what a tender moment they had in that scene, it should be looked at as such.
I'm glad the world is diverse, because it makes living in it exciting.
well I'm off to a Greek Restaurant owned by a gay couple, and don't worry, I'll still be a heterosexual when i leave.
Because LBGT stuff is apparently leftist propaganda along with Climate Change, Secularism, Social Justice, Equal Oppurtunity, Clean energy, women’s reproductive rights etc etc you know things that decent human beings shouldn’t harassed for wanting.
if you dont think they are pushing this gay agenda on us just go on the web or facebook, twitter, say something about gay people see the backlashed people get how many tv shows and movies announced on twitter that they having LGBT characters added on a show or a upcoming movie each day on social media
Ha! Lmao
Politics, by definition, is affairs of the city...
You use god of war as an example, but violence in video games is an “affair of the city” because of the ramification to young minds. This is not arguable from you because if one “political” aspect scares you, that means you are are afraid of the message being sent to the player and it’s effects.. works both ways.
so by your logic, something you do not like the topic of, it’s a political view “pushed by the leftist” but something you are ok with is not political because violence, or like all first person shooters, have no political agenda?
I hate using the description, but that is called ignorance.
Either gaming, as a whole, has an effect, or does not.
Which side you bat for does not matter and you are basically saying that the argument is made for worrying about gun violence and violence in gaming as well. All of which IS and has been political.
By your view, if we were to follow it fairly, because one side is not more correct over the other, we should just have cute games that are platformers with no death, no violence, not lbgt, or anything else because it is “political”.
It does have political moments in it.
When atreus finds out he is a God he begins showing himself as someone better than others because of a title he bears,
Same could be said about white supremists.
"dont be sorry, be better" is a general statement about our society, how we need to step it up to create a better world for our children.
We dont own the world, but are borrowing it from our descendants.
Are you telling me Shigeru Miyamoto made Mario with political intent? Well SHIT, I didn't know that!
Well, he is chasing a female he loves. Keep that nonsense out of video games. I don't need to know what Mario's sexuality is and that he runs through world's to find her love. It's disgusting and they need to remove it because it enrages my sensibilities.
The sexuality that propagated the human race is entirely apolitical. Demanding that everything which deviates from that get represented in all fiction is entirely political.
That same sexuality has over polluted the human race and now millions die of starvation and dehydration. Thanks for your moral superiority, screw the real world implications. We're no longer a few thousand Jews being scolded by God thousands of years ago. We went forth and multiplied. Now we're running out of fresh water and our planet is baking. Yay bigots!
^^ Where did you come from? You've got to be the most bitter person I've seen comment on any thread and this is the first time I've seen you.
Artists are free to express themselves in any fashion. Publishers have the right to meet public demands... I don’t support the concept of games as propaganda for one platform or another but know that my wallet will do voting. Just like it did with Netflix
Russ Pitts one of the most regressive voices to ever have been involved in gaming.
So two girls kiss in a game, movie, tv and it's a political decision?
I don't know if people realize this but people have been gay and bi-sexual since the beginning of the human race and having them in the media shouldn't be looked at as being a statement.
What gets me the most is when people of colour complain because they should know better when it comes to having people making a big deal when it comes to "them" being represented.
Having representation shouldn't be a negative or a celebratory issue.
It should just be.
now excuse me while i return to the day in's and day out's of living without trying to deny others from loving each other, whether they be straight or gay.
Reading the title I thought it was about politics but I guess sexuality may be politics in some countries?
Good read but the use of so many "big words" when simple and better understood words would have still made the same impact, made the author come off as pedantic. ;)
Politics, sexual orientation blah blah are a part of life. Why shouldn’t a piece of mature fiction incorporate them if the creator wants? If it upsets the immature amongst us who cares, it’s obviously not aimed at them anyway.
It doesn't bother me if Ellie loves a character in the game, and that character happens to be part of the plot.
So much for games being fun. Now theyll all just be forcing agendas down peoples throats in disguise as a game. Cant wait for Kratos to explain feminism to me. Knew this would happen. The moment GTA5 showed the world games could make more than movies, i knew politicians would start dumping money on developers to spew their shit.
I don't care what the dislike count is and that's the beauty in difference of opinion. My opinion isn't the popular one on N4G, and that's about all I get from it.
Your bubble, JokerBoy422, is your notion that anything pertaining to equality and the LGBTQ community is out of place in video games. The reality, which is encroaching on your bubble, thus shrinking it - is that these topics are in fact - fine. They aren't being shoved down anyone's throats, they are simply getting some of the limelight they deserve when it goes along with the narrative the creators have envisioned.
If these topics remove the fun factor in video games for you, well aw shucks, I guess you'll have to live with it.
I never said anything about the LGBT community lol. Your paranoia got the better of you. I just remember when video games were fun and not trying to brainwash me into voting for a particular politician.
I mean the kiss itself served no purpose at all lol and your blind if you don’t think there is a agenda out there in todays society.but bashing everything isn’t the going to help either wish people would understand each other better rather than slinging insults back and forth because a difference in opinion.
It is when your simply putting it in your game to virtue signal to people. https://www.youtube.com/wat...
^^ I could always just make blanket statements like you :D
edit: I did give an argument, and then supplemented that argument with a source to back it up. You're not good at this are you?
I'm just tired of the emphasis on ellie being a lesbian. Big whoop. I love the character regardless but talking about her sexual preference is totally irrelevant to the overall story.
It was annoying seeing more articles about how "shocking" it is that Ellie is lesbian when the first released than articles talking about the father/daughter dynamic. The former drowned out the latter do a ridiculous degree
Things were great before politicians found out video games are now a bigger market then big blockbuster movies.
People politicize everything and are offended at what is in games, what was left out etc.
So, yes - games and politics can’t be separated.
Then I guess you are gonna play Nintendo only cause you can’t deal with playing a game with different opinions then yours
^^ Incorrect, I'm not going to play games that are developed with the intention to virtue signal. You're complete failure of an attempt to sway my opinion of, "wont play games that have identity politics" into instead "you cant deal with playing a game with different opinions" is pretty pathetic. Keep trying. Because this is why people like you keep losing.
Politics are good and natural. Identity politics are a sideshow full of freaks.
I remember when politics did not poison video games. That time has passed sadly. Now, we can't escape the real world with movies or video games anymore. Everything is politics. Everyone has an agenda that they are trying to shove down your throat. Everyone thinks that how they feel and think is the best for everyone else and everyone needs to know about it.
Video games have consistently strived to reach a resemblance of reality. You can't achieve that if concepts such as class, creed, religion, sexuality and so forth are ignored. Whether or not those fall into what you classify as a political approach is irrelevant. Video games, like other mediums of art, create a setting in which those categories are filled in with a certain perspective. That's what storytelling is. Now some games might not touch on those subjects because of their source material or overall gameplay structure, and that's also okay.
Escapism is different for everyone. It's not poison unless what's being delivered is filled with hate and bigotry.
You can create a world with political struggles different from our own. The question and problem here is that todays games try to resable real life politics and they try to spread personal agendas. You can create a realistic game without dragging LGBTQWXYZ, SJW, democrat-republican politics in it. Games never strived to be politically correct and true to the real world. Games strived to be real as in real physics and the like. So that the game you play looks belivable. We play games so we can escape the world and do things we are not able otherwise. In the 90's we had tons of mascot games that had nothing to do with politics and they where great.
Hate and bigotry is different for everyone. You can find those things in anything you want if you are willing to do enough mental gymanstics.
I agree with you on most of what you've said AnubisG, I just don't see how the moment a character who is lesbian is shown kissing another woman - constitutes as being forced/agenda based. Wouldn't that constitute as realism? At least for those it represents?
If a game was actually forcing it - inserting elements that served no purpose, then I'd take issue with it. But I haven't seen that happen beyond some poor narrative attempts in ME:Andromeda.
I don't think games need to be politically correct either (it can be an exhaustive, never ending cycle), but I also think it's appreciative when the narrative/world building includes elements not commonly represented, in a natural way - key point, a character showing affection towards another character.
But again, with the majority of what you said, from different world building to the notion of the 90's having mascots without political threads, I agree.
@Chaosdreams
You are one of the few person in N4g that seems to apply logic in 2018. Majority just dont seem to understand and accept the change / and want to stay conservative as possible. Jesus its 2018, either accept it or move on for God sakes.
Devs can inject politics into their games all they want...I just wont buy the ones that are heavy handed. What I wish for more, is that video game websites would kept their left leaning politics out of EVERYTHING! You are paid to play video games and or discuss movies and tv shows.... you are not a pubic university trying to recruit people to socialism
Pretty sure Politics is not in Mario Kart. So whatever. I aint buying LoU2. My $ will go elsewhere.
Too bad for this writer. They paid the money so they have every right to run it how they want. If the writer wants to put up the money they can do what they want, but unfortunately the writer just wants other people to buy the place and run it as the writer requests
Long story short, too bad so sad writer
WTF are you talking about?
1) The writer ultimately works for the same company that he is referring to in this piece.
"OnlySP’s parent company Enthusiast Gaming, in collaboration with Russ Pitts, announced the purchase and revival of The Escapist—"
2)The writer at no point takes a negative position and concludes on a positive sympathetic note.
"Whether The Escapist succeeds or fails in its goal will be determined across the coming months and years, but it has already made a positive start. In kickstarting a new conversation about the role of political values in gaming discourse, The Escapist has pledged to reject the established norms and commit to a new paradigm."
2 women kissing is a political statement but a game about a war in the middle east isn't. All the LITERAL POLITICAL POINTS being made in GTA is okay, but again, 2 women kissing is shoving politics down your throats.
Identity politics is far more annoying than war, pretty sure most people agree with that. With war, you can at least get action out of the game, you can have a problem and a solution. With a lot of the war based games, you can actually play as both sides sometimes. Where as with identity politics, it's simply the developers virtue signaling for more buys, or transposing their political views into games just for the sake of pushing their ideology. This is why people don't like it in this particular situation imo. People just saying, "why are people questioning just a kiss?" are looking at it far too simply.
So are you saying gay protagonists in general are inherently identity politics? Should they be banned from games entirely? It's not virtue signaling just because you don't like something.
@cypher No I'm not stating that gay protagonists in general are inherently identity politics. Im simply stating that in most cases (such as this very one) they use things like gay protagonists as a mean to virtue signal. Is that your tactic? is to beat someone in an argument by automatically trying to make them out like they are a gay hating person who should not be trusted when you cant rebuttle their original point? This is such a tired argumentative tactic with you people.
edit: Here is a pretty good source to back up as to why this is virture signaling in the case of Naughty Dog with Ellie as portrayed with Chloe from Uncharted. I could use the same exact points in this video, but it's a whole lot easier to send you a link to a video that demonstrates my point as to why this particular situation is not just Naughty Dog innocently making her lesbian and putting it in the spotlight. https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Watch it if you want to, or not, that's usually what happens anyways.
The only people who are telling us that games and politics can't be separated are the far left who wish to weaponize them like they did with movies and television in order to use them as propaganda to brainwash us.
Don't fool yourselves.
Look up Project Mockingbird.
Um... of course they can. Once upon a time, there were no political ties to games whatsoever........ until there were, and here we are today.
Of course we can discuss politics. But do we really have to do it in video games? A place where I'm immersed and far away from a lot of the bs of reality.
My favorite game Bioshock is heavily political. Ideologies can make great premises for games. The premise of all of the Bioshock games are that utopias are impossible and every civilization and structure is flawed because of the human element. This is proven through world history, stories and mythologies.
This a very different discussion than “well we want 3 black character, 3 gays, 6 women and a trans because representation”. This isn’t politics, there is no thought involved here. They are auto pilot activists and they are trashy. So when people say they are against politics in games they are really against the politically correct nature that has crippled the culture. Not “politics”.
The general consensus of Games Media.
"Politics in video games is good as long as its politics I agree with."
This is why politics in games is pissing people off, not because it's there, its the god damn grandstanding from the media etc because whenever something happens that doesn't align with their own personal political view you get more vitriol. Farcry 5 had quite a few nonsense pieces written about it, yet they forgot its a silly action game at its core. Thus you get outrage pieces screaming Nazis or whatever, because they feel the games not inclusive because it doesn't tick their long list of boxes so they can even mark a game down for that for a review..
At least that's the aspect I see more of.
We all have our 1st amendment right to speak about anything any way we choose. As far as Naughty Dog's agenda goes, I can see how it would bother some, but it doesn't bother me. Looking forward to a stellar sequel to one of my favorite games of all time.
I never understood why so many lesbians dressed like men. Isn't that the point of a lesbian that they are attracted to the female body?
How about we let artists make whatever they want. And we support the art we like with our money. Idk, just a thought.
My stance on this issue is quite simple: it should be up to the devs whether they want to be political or not, and what kind of message they want to put in their games, assuming they want to put one in them. They should not be forced to abstain from making a political statement, but nor should they be forced to. Free speech means that people should be free to say what they wish, and abstain from saying what they don't, and that can manifest itself in many different ways. Games are just another medium of expression. The audience is likewise free to respond how they will as that too is free speech.
I must admit, im not a fan of that scene. Its just unnecessary.. I would feel the same way if she were kissing a man. Making out on the dance floor seems forced. Im still buying the game. I know its going to be great. Just dont want to sit through forced virtue signaling

A great interview that shines a light on an under-discussed topic in the industry.
