"Back in 2010 the gaming world was reintroduced to the Donkey Kong Country series with a brand-new Retro Studios-developed entry in the franchise known as Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Nintendo Wii. It is now three years later and who could have guessed a game like DKCR could be possible on a handheld. That is exactly what has happened with Monster Games porting the Wii original to the Nintendo 3DS with Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Is this game a top banana or a rotten one?
What You Need to Know
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a port of the Wii original that released back in 2010. While Retro Studios developed the Wii game, Monster Games (the folks behind the Wii Excite games and Pilotwings Resort) worked on the 3DS port. All of the content of the original DKCR is included with this Returns 3D, but there’s also a good helping of completely exclusive to the 3DS version content. In many regards, the game is a much better overall product for it.", writes Nintendo-Okie.
Phil writes, "A few weeks ago was the 40th anniversary of Nintendo's main monkey, Nintendo's awesome ape, Nintendo's super simian: Donkey Kong. This Tuesday 10s focuses on the best of the banana bunch in the Donkey Kong series, from main games to spin-offs! It's a banana slamma' of games, so let's get to it."
Tropical Freeze is way better than Country Returns and Dixie's whatever it's called. It's easily in top 3 DK games.
My first reaction was... They made 10 Donkey Kong games?! Then I thought that must be every single one... then I checked the list and Donkey Kong 64 is not even on it. No wonder Nintendo won't make more 3D Donkey Kong. I really enjoyed tropical freeze but I am still waiting for the next 3D game. Its really the only thing I want from the series at this point. Also, I can't take Jungle beat seriously...
Half-Glass Gaming: "Production of the 3DS has been discontinued as of September of 2020, but there’s definitely an argument to be made for adopting the system in 2021, especially if you just really like playing awesome video games."
Several Nintendo Selects titles are on sale for $15 at Amazon right now. The deals include Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, and Star Fox 64 3D.
Well deserved score. I actually like it better than the Wii version.
