Top 10 Satisfying Shotguns In Gaming

Say what you want about peering down the scope or iron sights of a rifle and carefully lining up that perfect headshot. It can be rewarding. But sometimes, you’re too lazy or impatient for that. Sometimes, you just want to rush in, get up close, vaguely aim in a foe’s general direction and see him fly across the room. In that case, the shotgun has been scratching that particular itch ever since Doom lit up computer screens in 1993.

In this list, we’ll be counting down the 10 most satisfying-to-use shotguns to grace the realm of shooters. Factors include overall damage and range, the weapon’s visual design and animation, its general sense of kickback and bloodletting, and ragdoll physics, among others. Without further ado, let’s pop in some buckshots and get right into it! (Bulletstorm, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Hitman: Blood Money, PC, PS2, PS3, Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, Red Faction: Armageddon, Resident Evil 5, Spec Ops: The Line, Unreal Tournament 2004, Xbox 360)

Flak Cannon from Unreal Tournament 2004 is awesome, and so is the Blitz Cannon from R&C: Going Commando

The Boneduster from BulletStorm is on the list... awesome gun. Not on the list id the shotgun from Bioshock. That gun is bad ass too.

To this day I still think Doom 1/2 had the most impact in terms of shotgun mechanics. YES many games after improved on the mechanics and the sound but it was Doom that felt it had the most ooomph when shooting baddies.

The Supershooty is hard to beat. It was the first thing I thought of.

Also might not technically count but the Helghast rifle with underslung Shotty round for secondary fire in Killzone 1 is one of my favourite guns ever. Unleashing a drum of rifle fire and then finishing off with the shotty was magic. Did you notice the sniper shot in the new Killzone? I'm really excited to think they might be bringing secondary fire back.

Yes, the shotty in Spec Ops was just plain brutal. I think a honorable mention should go to Halo 2 as well. I loved that shotgun, especially when you could catch an opponent off the reload. They see you starting your reload animation, run up on you, and with that one shell just inserted, the circle turns red as their helmets fill it and blam!! Dead spartan warrior. That was so satisfying.
