Used Games - What Are They Good For?

Are used games hurting the game industry? This is the question that will always be asked. Some will argue the developers should get every dollar well others would say forget about their wallets I’m worried about mine. Both are right but one is better than the other for the industry.

In the earlt '90s, it was game rental stores that were killing gaming. Then it was PC piracy. Now it's used games. Before long, it'll be GAMERS who are killing the industry by demanding too much (we're already seeing developers say stuff like that). Yet publishers don't want to take any blame. Nope, it was used game sales that caused SE to overspend $100 million on the Tomb Raider reboot. Nope, it was used games that caused Microsoft to blow 1/2 a billion bucks on Kinect advertisement. Nope, it certainly isn't the fault of the game companies being frivolous with their money. Nope, it's all used games.

I don't typically buy used games, but I'm grateful the option is there if a game becomes uncommon or out-of-print. Zack & Wiki can run as much as $50 for a new copy, but a used copy is less than $20.

No used market = harder to build a collection as time goes on.

Oh, and another thing: a large number of people already dislike the idea of paying $60 for a brand-new game (money doesn't flow like it used to 6 years ago). However, if a person knows they can buy the game, beat it in a few weeks, and then trade it in for $30+, they'll do it, because in their eyes, they're only spending $30 or so on the brand-new game. I saw this ALL THE TIME when working on Gamestop. In fact, that's exactly why Gamestop offers such lucrative (relatively speaking) bonuses on trading in new games.

Take away the used game market and I guarantee you we will see a decrease of new-game purchases.

how about the most important thing...

if there is used games, then people can buy more games for the same amount of money... meaning more games played, gamers educated and next time when a sequel of "likes" comes out, you buy a new one, full price..

hell GTA started from pirated copy for me... on PC, it was some old gta game from above, great game for that time.. then I downloaded GTA2..

now Im buying every GTA game new, full price...

and that is only one example... I buyed some used PS3 games and then if I liked the game.. I buyed/pre-ordered the next one new...

used games cant hurt anyone, they only give opportunity to play games for people who cant afford to buy every game they want brand new.. and then if people want to sell the game they get some cash back, very useful.

And just to add... this used game fee stuff literally should be illegal.... what if now FORD will sell you new cars and say.. you will not be able to sell it.. you could only give it to your friend to drive.. but not sell or trade.. if you want to sell it then you must pay us "FORD" a 25% fee....
it dosnt sound right does it... :) real CD copy with information on it is no different from a car.. cars have even more stuff that is hidden or known by manufacturers only!

so the point is that, only because data is digital, dosnt mean that it belongs only for developer.. well it does belong to developer.. but the actual CD that we buy belongs to us and everything on it is legally buyed not stolen or something.. we can use how we like, with who we like and should be able to trade sell or throw out... just like any other thing you buy at mall..

That is likely true. However how much revenue will be gained to a game publisher if the used market is now controlled (where part of the revenue now comes back to them) and will that be offset by those people buying less new games?

Which is why they will all gravitate to a walled garden so that they can control sales. Publishers started to adopt DLC as a tactic to get additional revenue, now they offer season passes. Some games like Watchdogs will be single player games but in a living environment that will require a connection. Same with Destiny. That is also another way to force people to be connected.

First was physical copies with no restrictions, now we see games with online codes that can only be used once and if you want to use them again there is a fee. The next step is to control that physical disc by tying it to your account. This takes away the anonymity of the sale and can now be counted as one sale. The reason is game publishers see more people with accounts online than games sold. All that stat tracking and online services are now tied to all those people who bought that one disc. So that one sale could mean multiple owners.

So why don't they just do away with physical disc? We aren't there yet where everyone can or wants to download huge files and streaming services are not fast enough. Right now we are already forced to buy some goods online. PSN, Nintendo Network, Steam and Xbox Live games are all digital goods that can't be resold or traded. Some games on handheld devices like Vita only sell certain games online. As time goes on more and more games will be restricted to online only. The AAA games will be the last to adopt because the cost are so high they need to sell those titles to as many people as possible and digital games are out of reach for some people still.

That's the risk, isn't it? Publishers will have more control (and more profit-per-game), sure, but they risk losing potential customers and damaging their own reputation, which will have long-lasting effects.

I agree with both of you guys. The people seem to think that everybody has limitless pools of cash to spend. But that's not the truth. People are not going to magically produce $60 instead of the $30 that they planned to spend just the Microsoft or the developer eliminated the $30 used game option.

Dedicatedtogamers is right. Removing used games is going to raise the entry point into the market for video games and hurt the sales of NEW games, it won't help their sales one bit.


@Tvensky, although your English is very good, it looks like English is not your first language. Let me offer this tidbit.

the past tense of "buy" is "bought". As in....

I buy video games today.
I bought video games five years ago.

"Buyed" is not a word in English.

You can buy most anything used nowadays without the original manufacturer getting a piece of the money....why should games be any different?

i dont know how many times ive gotten a game and its total crap at 60 bucks and would like to trade it in seeing that i have no use for it so trade it in fast and onto my next gaming adventure... now? who knows but what i do know is it makes it to where i wouldn't think of buying a new IP with these possible restrictions, what i do think will happen is M$ will charge more and give less than gamestop im sure of
