Will Sony’s Focus on The Gamers Lose Them the Next Generation?

Dan writes - "According to the gamers out there, the Xbox One reveal was an hour long train wreck in the form of a press conference. Instead of focusing on the gamers’ needs, they focused on the general population featuring things such as live television control, movies, Skype, and other things that aren’t games. Although they did show off Forza Motorsport 5, a trailer for Quantum Break, some information and video for Fifa 14, Madden 14, and Call of Duty: Ghosts; it didn’t seem like that was enough to appease the game hungry gamers."

They need to at least recognize multimedia functions. Advertise in general.

-Mika-1604d ago

I don't know why you have 4 disagrees. If Sony want to be mainstream. They have to get the casuals and the casuals want a media box as well as a game system for the children.

It sad how the ps2 was such a mainstream product in the early 00s and now the 360 is that mainstream product. When you watch tv shows or read the sunday sales paper. It always advertising the 360. Sony need s to get on their A game if they want to dominate again.

Godmars2901604d ago

No. The 360 became a mainstream product because of XBL Gold. An external virtual accessory which has become as important to the system as its own hardware. Meanwhile like with the PS2, when you bought a PS3 everything it was came in the box. Its only real failings its virtual extensions: the broken web browser which started to get blocked before it was semi-fixed, and Linux OS which made it vulnerable to hacking and had to be removed.

Now we're looking at PS4/Xb1 and MS is doubling down on the virtual while Sony's largely playing catchup. And they aren't going to as far as main media in the US is concerned but that's the thing: as broadly as MS appears to be aiming with XBL, they're still forced to focus on the US market. That's going to cost them in regards to worldwide, but if they win in the one market that could mean 100 million users who are paying them to watch their TV through their console.

Still given all that, Sony shouldn't just surrender on that front. The PS3 is still the lead platform for Netflix and Sony needs to own that in the conscious public mind. All they have to do is remind the public consciously of what they're already doing unconsciously.

Focusing on gaming doesn't mean do only gaming! PS3 is an All in One console but it gave us some of the best games ever, thanks to Sony's first party studios. PS3's popularity increased very much after the announcement of PS+ as well!

People buy consoles to play games in first place.

Biggest1604d ago

Sony has always had A focus on the multimedia aspect of their gaming devices. The fact that they concentrated on games this time around doesn't change that fact. What is the purpose of trying to spin Microsoft's concentration on TV as a good thing for gaming? Sony has always done the other stuff. There is no need to pretend they haven't.

If you like Microsoft's focus that's good on you (I suppose). Don't drag the other guys into the same mud Microsoft got themselves into.

insomnium21604d ago

Define "lose". Gamers win when there are games. Sony has the games in spades for PS4 (and any Sony platform). This is a gamer website so anything regarding PS4 losing is an instafail here. Anyone rejoicing XB1 with it's gamer-hurting-policies should be banished from this site forever.

Without games it's all for nothing.

VonBraunschweigg1604d ago

He said advertising:) You're going to get plenty of advertisement my friend. And you will get what you pay for. Twice. And then you still need to buy the product they're advertising.

So stop watching TV & reading those sundaypapers and buy a PS1234 and start gaming.

SilentNegotiator1603d ago

It's not like people think that Ps4 won't have blu-ray and Netflix and etc.

People already have multimedia and know they're getting next gen. No one cares about HDMI in and none of the big three need to advertise the multimedia portion of their system very much.

Last gen, each console had its time in the sun, and every time a console was selling well, it was because it was focusing on gamers.

Wii focused on everybody, but they were reaching out with games, nonetheless.

360 dominated for several years by offering gamers a lot of exclusives and a great online experience (XBL).

Then the PS3 came around and dominated by offering gamers a lot of exclusives and a great online experience (PS+)

Minato-Namikaze1604d ago

360 never dominated, unless you mean only in the US market.

All I'm saying that Sony shouldn't give off the appearance of rolling over and giving up in regards to media when they've always had a large influence.

The PS2 made DVDs a dominant format with little to no advertising. The PS3 not only won it for BR, but expanded Netflix despite the 360 having it all to itself for almost a year.

I have to disagree with you about the 360 "dominating" anything because of that, and the far better example the PS2 offers for what true domination is.

If the 360 had truly dominated, the difference between it and the PS3 should have grown, not shrunk.

@AngelicIceDiamond
But MS is using "games" like any other PR phrase they beat to the ground. Don't have good history of versatility even when games are concerned. Are known for three shooters and one driving game.

Meanwhile platformers, RPGs and action games filled the PS2's library with DVD movie playback almost a footnote.

koolaid2511603d ago

Xbox 360 had the lead for years over ps3 ps3 just caught up recently!!!

Versatility never hurt anybody.

Seems like Sony is at mercy from its own fans. Look at this scenario.

MS has invested 400mill in the NFL deal and 1billion on games. MS easily could of talked about the NFl, Basketball and none gaming related stuff in there interviews.

Most of MS conversations has been all about games, games, games and new ip's they'll wanna show off. They even talked about a new studio in Japan. Microsoft Studios Osaka (good luck there)

Now I'm glad Sony is focused on games and they will deliver on its first party but versatility never hurt anyone.

Thatguy-3101604d ago

They obviously will provide multimedia like Netflix and Hulu+. Dont expect them to shell out millions of dollars for apps that cater to the mainstream. Handling the basic multimedia is enough for gamers that don't want to play games for a while. PS4 will be a gaming machine with many exclusives just like the ps3 and it will have basic applications that gamers love. Just finished The Last of Us demo and I would literally prefer them shelling out millions of dollars on games similar to the quality that's found in Naught Dogs next masterpiece.

Remember it only does everything... Playstation advertisement

MariaHelFutura1604d ago

If all gaming companies focused on games, no one would even ask this question. The fact this question even goes through anybodys mind is quite frankly disgusting.

Aceman181604d ago (Edited 1604d ago )

For me I want a games machine first all the media stuff I can honestly live without. Hell I go weeks at a time without watching Netflix on my PS3.

My system(s) are games machines 90% of the time so since Sony is focusing on the games first it only makes sense that I purchase the PS4.

Unlike most here I actually watch live TV and I'm not in need of another cable box. If I do decide that I would want the Xbox I'll get it after it has had several price drops I'm in no hurry to buy one.

Veneno1604d ago

Their focus on gamers gave them the victory over Xbox this gen, so it will most likely work in the next coming generation.

I started this gen with xbox 360, mainly because it came out first and because I was hungry for next gen gaming, but I planned on getting both anyway. It seemed like for a while that xbox was going to beat playstation 3 until MGS4 arrived. I bought a PS3 just in time for that game and that was when I realized that this one game was better than the entire 360 library up to that point. I knew that thenbest games for me were going to be on PS3. And I was completely and totally fine with PS3 coming in "3rd" place as long as the best games came to it.

And now ps3 has beaten xbox 360. If it can do that then it at least has a shot a beating Wii in a few years time. Never thought I'd see that happen but the point is true game rs don't give a flying damn about sales. ONLY GAMES.

mushroomwig1604d ago

To be honest, no matter what they do people will still complain. It's gone from "Sony need to focus more on games!" when the PS3 was first released to this, damned if they do and damned if they don't.

dedicatedtogamers1604d ago

75% of it comes from viral marketers and brand cheerleaders. It's as if people cannot fathom one console being different from the rest (it is partly why the Wii was hated by the hardcore, though now that hate is fading, thankfully)

richierich1604d ago

Focusing on gamers is what makes Sony so successful in the games industry, dont get me wrong I will buy both consoles but the main reason I will buy them is for games not for sports, skype etc

Majin-vegeta1604d ago

Kaz has stated they will also focus on Multimedia but foremost the gamer's are there number one priority.I buy a console to play games the other extra stuff is just icing on the cake.

“I fundamentally believe that the initial market that we need to make sure we appeal to with any new platform … is really the gaming audience,” Hirai said. “They will be the supporters of your platform and they will help propel the installed base.”

He said Sony would add other entertainment apps, “But that’s after we establish the platform as a video game platform. We want to make sure that we are there for the gamers with our PS4 as well. They will go beyond this, but they’ll definitely start with gamers first.

He concluded, “For us, it’s all about the gamers.”

antbolton891604d ago

If it does i will quit gaming

ANIALATOR1361604d ago

if Xbox wins in the state it is now, gaming as we know it will die

Mustang300C20121604d ago

Another generation and another doomsday post. You don't have all the facts and you and many others CONTINUE to post fear mongering comments about half ass information.

Salooh1604d ago (Edited 1604d ago )

I'm already bored of gaming because of how complicated to play games and how simple the games are. Only few makes me excited. X1 is making it 10x worst for me which means if sony follow it's policy i will quit gaming. It's too expensive hobby and i only get little love from it.

To be honest i consider the people who will buy X1 (slaves).
