When it comes to the realistic simulation of humans and humanoids, the realistic modeling of hair is one of the last remaining barriers. With its millions of interwoven and interrelated strands, is really difficult to get right.
I'd say Alice actually handled the hair better than this tech demo. In this video the rendering is extremely good, but the physics don't behave even remotely like hair.
Personally I'd say the Luminous Engine's hair based tech demo's actually looked better, not to mention how quick and easy it is to tweak.
Theses people who made this program arent artists. When game develper artist's get there hands on this tech then we will see some magic I can promise you that.
Dont see the big deal ... I dont play games to see realistic hair waving in the wind. It's cool and everything ... but nothing to hoot over. I guess it's just more ammo for the PC gaming crowd :) "Our hair is fabulous! Consoles suck!"
This kind of tech will be used in console games as well, a small detail that would add realism. There was no need for you to have a pop at pc gamers. If it's not a big deal to you, why are you here looking?
this type of tech can be used for a LOT more than just someones scalp, it can be used in character designs(could you imagine shadow of the colossus with this?)and it can be used for grass and many other forms of plant life
I don't really care about hair-animation. So long as it moves somewhat in accord with gravity, I'm happy. (I was laughing out loud in Tomb Raider when all of Lara's hair was pointing straight up except for her ponytail in that one scene where she's suspended upside down).
Rather than physics, I'd rather see hair that... just doesn't look like ass. Bethesda, I'm talking about you right now.
B-b-bbu muh Tomb Raiderz!
Edit: Oh, and Alice: Madness Returns, which looks a hell of a lot better than TR.
I thought the hair in Tomb Raider (PC) was really good. It was a step in the right direction.
I love Siggraph.
edit: "from only fifty input images..." lol (second video)
We need to import this into Fallout and Skyrim stat!!!
;)
