IGN: "Dust 514's poor shooting and driving mechanics and grindy free-to-play economy blot out too much of its depth and fun."
This game was hyped to high heavens when it was first announced. You'd think after such an extensive beta period it would be darn polished by now. Meh.
It's actually good now,a solid 7.5
Shag off Ign, it has the most in depth character customization in an FPS and the piloting is awesome(great ships/love em). It's only **** if you're **** at it This game simply requires your time a little and to get used to the complexity, it's not even that complex in the end.
I play it almost daily, and would give it no less than an 8. To each their own, but this game kicks a lot of ass.
it was crap during the beta and its crap now. no matter how much fancier you make the menus and UI, you cant polish a turd.
I actually did polish a turd once for a science project. I got a lot of strange looks and a "D" but it worked.
that better be true!
I didn't think the beta was too great either. Really lacked polish. It had the fundamentals there but it just didn't quite come together. Have no idea if the released game is any better or worse but it hasn't been getting good reviews. I really don't trust IGN though.
Did not see that coming. I thought IGN threw 9s at everything that moved? Must have not paid them enough, that's the only way to get a decent review out of IGN these days. Just to sum up the ridiculousness they spew, check out this parody I embedded. And if that doesn't trike your fancy try this one, also another parody of their reviews. /watch?v=BC-MKzl1mig
Quick! Throw us some tin foil hats before we are fooled by IGN's evil corruption!
I would, but my shop is all out of tin foil... IGN must have paid them to remove it from the shelves.
To be fair IGN are actually corrupt. You can tell by the fact that they didn't write a story about the no DRM for PS4 and used games campaign on twitter. Any videogame website that cares about gamers and the future of the industry would of written an article about it. They're in publishers pockets.
This gets a 5.8 but Call of Duty gets 9's every year? Seems legit.
The game is really, really lacking polish. It's not THAT bad, but the game mechanics, graphics, audio, net code, etc, are all really rough around the edges. The game needs some serious work. The lag and reg issues are horrible. With such a long beta, you'd figure the game would have been fixed by now.
I kinda like this game. It feels like it has more potential than most MP shooters. It's constantly updated and I think this one can't be reviewed like generic shooters. This is free to play, it's much more complex, not meant for 16 year old Call of Duty fans and it has some kind of nyche vibe to it that really intrigues me. This is a MMOFPS. So it's about a community, a new universe and connectivity with another universe... This has to grow on you. I think this can't be reviewed (just like WOW can't be reviewed IMHO)
I agree with you to a point. This isn't the sort of game you can spend a day or two with and review, it just takes more time than that(as it is with MMOs period). The problem is there has to be something that grabs you at the beginning that makes you want to keep playing it, and this game doesn't have that for me. Several others are right when they same the game lacks polish and it is painfully obvious once you get in a game. On a personal note, I've tried the game multiple times throughout its existence and I just don't like it. I have tried to like it, more than any other game I've played lately. It just doesn't grab me in any sort of way. A bit to bland/boring perhaps. Having said that, I would take anything that "professional" reviewers say with a grain of salt. I'd say try the game for yourself, it is free after all.
Dust 514 is a cool game. The complexity stumps alot of people. The funny part is, it's not that complex. But it requires more dedication and observation than a pick up play game like COD. I rarely listen to IGN reviews anyway. Truth of the matter though, plenty websites trash this game. And @Hoika made a good point. It has to grow on you. You can't simply review it.
1. The idea was nice, the game even on beta didn't seem that bad. This score on IGN's average is really low. 2. Thanks, a whole lotta thanks, IGN, for putting F2P one more step away from consoles. This model is horrible!
Me and my friends love Dust. We came from MAG and some of us have EVE backgrounds. I don't think the game should be considered out of beta yet, but that's out of my hands. The game is fun as is, there's a shit-ton in the pipeline to make it better, and it'll never cost a dime to play. I don't see the problem. There's nothing you can get with real money that doesn't have a free equivalent you can earn with in-game money. The paid items are just reskins, some of basic suits, some of the more advanced things which you get to use without skilling into them. It isn't pay to win at all. And it may be daunting coming in as a noob and going toe-to-toe with Dust vets, but realistically there's only so much equipment you can field at any given moment. Player skill and tactics outweigh equipment power in -most- cases, but the game is struggling with some balancing issues at the moment. The game definitely could have used more polish before being officially unveiled, and there is some basic stuff that is mysteriously still absent, but if they just deliver on the current upcoming features list the game will be undeniably robust, engaging, and enjoyable. If Dust evolves anything like EVE has over the past decade, it's going to be -the- thinking man's wargame, bar none. PS: It really seems like a lot of people don't understand. Just because they say dust is "officially out", doesn't mean this is all you're ever going to see. This isn't Halo or Blops where they just release the game and then charge 15 bucks for new maps. There is way, waaay more coming, and it'll all be free. PPS: Just make an account and try it out. Don't like it? come back later! You'll have earned more skill points in the meantime, the game will be more polished and have more features over time.
Nicely put...summed it all up.
Yeah, well said. I'm not a huge fan of Dust - but I played a few games in beta and could see the potential. The load out screens and UI could do with some tweaking. For some reason I find building load outs very clunky (and I played EVE Online for a few years!!) I'm still wondering if there's going to be a PS4 version with cross play in EVE and PS3 Dust.
Well said. Only thing I'd add is to advise new players to join a Corporation (like a guild) and play in squads. This game is a team based shooter and playing in squads is when it shines.
IMO its not that bad folks. Its F2P so might as well try it out whilst you still have a PS3.
I played it and thought it was awful. The idea sounded brilliant, but everything was poorly executed.
Regardless, PS fans will soon have a far better package in Planetside 2 when it drops on PS4. I had a feeling that this wouldn't turn out quite so well, but MMOs are constantly evolving beasts and this game might turn it around in the end.
It will certainly be nice to have the choice of two MMOFPS games on Playstation consoles :) I love the idea of the integration between EVE and Dust. But I loved Planetside 1 on PC. I have tried Planetside 2, but not really got in to it yet.
Planetside 2 was mind-blowingly awesome for the first month of release, but now it's really boring since people's excitement died out and not many people play anymore, since it takes too long to level up and no one wants to pay for guns that are all too similar to each other. Also spawning is broken when a certain team is pushed back becuase you need points to spawn vehicles and such.
That IGN review of Dust is absolutely horrible. At least some related reviews below score it higher. Such a shame, I don't think the author reviewed properly, if that makes any sense. But I take IGN's review with a grain of salt. Triple A games score high and the most commonly crapped on game by the internet scores low.
Apart from a few short stints I haven't ever been interested in online FPS games. I quickly got bored with the fact that the cost of death is nothing more than a short wait to respawn and the rewards are only some XP for character that I have little to no control over. Dust 514 however has me hooked! Character customisation couldn't get any deeper. It's intimidating at first but once you come to grips with it it's a lot of fun planning how to equip your soldier and what strategies you'll use with each fit on the field. Speaking of which the other reason I can't stop playing this game is because its a thinking man's game, if you're not in a squad that has a plan you'll not do well, plus victory is that much sweater when you can share it with squad mates. Perhaps my lack of experience with other FPS games enables me to not see the flaws in frame rate or aiming, if so I'd say ignorance is bliss. Dust 514 is a deep and engaging MMOFPS, the learning curve is steep and punishing but if you're looking for a complex team based shooter this is the game for you.
My God!!!IGN's reviews are seriously horrible this year.Where are Colin and Greg have they been promoted??! This Game is a Beast imo,1st day i was quickly invited to a corp..this game has potential to become something massive...nova knives need work aswell as the sniper
Dust 514 was just a marketing stunt just so Sony could get a little more praise that it deserves. At least MAG was actually a fine game.
Dust 514 is a nice concept, but nothing more. The game fails at technical issues like bad graphics and awful animation, simplistic sound, uninspired story, limited and empty scenarios, the upgrades and the optimizations are confusing and the game has a lot of expensive microtransactions. The game is free but even so is expensive, because requires a lot of time and patience because it's an unfinished product. Sony must stop to invest in expensive projects with mediocre companies, three years of development for an horrible game. In other hand Planetside 2 is a masterpiece, because was developed directly for Sony Online.
Dust is the best FPS on PS3 right now in my opinion. Plenty of branches when it comes to skill point allocation, great squad system, needs a few tweaks here and there when it comes to some weapons but it's a solid game. Especially for its price.
Agree with the review. I was really hyped, then severely let down. The controls are truly "wonky"
