Tango Gameworks' "Difference of Opinion" Over Modern Survival-Horror Games - AusGamers

AusGamers has previewed The Evil Within and also interviewed Tango Gamesworks' Masato Kimura who explains how the studio's idea of survival-horror differs from that of others.

"So since Shinji Mikami defined the genre, it’s been a long time,” says Tango’s Masato Kimura who serves as a producer on The Evil Within. “So the definition of the genre has broadened; [it’s] widened and has evolved a lot.

“But the very important things for survival-horror are fear and of course ‘scare’; how scary it is -- those are horror elements, and you have to [be able to] overcome that fear, or beat that fear,” he adds “So the balance between those two is very important. We [Tango] have our ideal balance of those two [but] modern horror games have a difference of opinion about those balances.”

Don't listen to the modern survival horror, listen to your roots, adapt and expand on that. Shinji Mikami and Tango have an opportunity here, the opportunity to once again show us how to experience horror on the game medium.

I think they need to do something so that death means a lot more in a video game. I'm not going to be scared if I know that dying means I'll just re-spawn and try again. I think death should be scarier.

Make the player cling to the controller for dear life and actually be worried about their character dying. That would make a horror game more intense.

I do agree with your comment. But how to go about it? That's another problem altogether.

Well, there should be some sort of punishment more harsh than just starting back at the latest checkpoint. Maybe starting at the checkpoint, but now your ammo is gone?

I don't know... I'm not a game creator. I just wanna see something different. I want death to mean something rather than... "oh crap, I died... oh well".

News about The Evil Within just gets better and better.

Go back to your roots...but don't make it overly "horror" by throwing a hard to read font and organ music.
A good example is just trying to recreate the Bear Scene from Condemned 2 or the elevator gameshow sequence from silent hill 2...or was it 3?

That bear chase was brilliant in my opinion. It was truly terrifying.
