How Realistic Is The Last Of Us?

By Vaughn.H

No, that’s not a title alluding to just how gorgeous The Last of Us looks for a game created on a now ageing console – I can say that now the PlayStation 4 has been announced. Instead I’m looking at just how plausible Ellie and Joel’s adventure really is, how Naughty Dog took realism into account when seeing the Cordyceps fungus spread to humans and just how fast the world coud succumb to nature.

I imagine your first reaction will be one of derision, guffawing as you say “not very” in answer to my question, pointing to the fact that it’s a highly-exaggerated look at the possibility of a parasitical outbreak across humanity. But would you be surprised to know that Naughty Dog actually went all-out on ensuring that their PlayStation 3 swan song was really grounded in reality? So much so that they took biologist Dr. David Hughes on to help create a plausible fungal outbreak in their world. (Culture, Naughty Dog, PS3, The Last Of Us)

Man this video is crazy, I hope they can help him fix that fungus but the last of us getting ideas from real life stuff is nuts. Great job naughty dog. This game will be a masterpiece.

This had to be the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Horrible thing to have! The Last of Us will be great and it's a realistic game for sure. Can't wait to play it!

Amazing article, straight up. If you take the time to read it, not only is it insightful but it's taking the analysis of the games story to a whole new direction.

Seriously, I thought this was going to be another article on graphics or something, this is nuts!

Also that video is a little too much for me to stomach at times.

Amazing article indeed. I was gonna ignore it, but thanks to you.

It's interesting to see which commenters actually read the article and which ones just decided to comment - especially as the article has nothing to do with what The Last of Us looks like...

I can't believe I'll be playing this game in a couple of weeks, usually my summers suck when it comes to gaming but to have a game as big as this close to summer is awesome.

Wow....that video blew my mind.

I've never heard of such an affliction. That's insane, bro. It's more than likely a little too late for the guy to get it removed without suffering permanent damage, but I wish him the best.

I didnt watch the video, cuz just by looking at the picture in the article my stomach flipped. Great article though. Amazing how Naughty Dog utilized real-world threats and added some Hollywood to it. Still, plausible nonetheless.

Love the way the pc crowd shouted that the PC will kill a ps4,when a ps3 is pushing games that poop on anything PC , lol...go figure.

TLoU looks astounding for such old hardware but I think you're overreacting just a tiny bit, lol.

If only it wasn't for people who comment based on the article title, not the substance of the writing. Ah well. :)

Based on the IGN live stream, the A.I in TLoU is pretty freakin' impressive.

for me is the best looking console game this gen

I suppose you could say The Last of Us is realistic in that you don't have any super 'anything.' Your wits, skill, luck and timing are probably what will get you through this game.

I can't hardly wait!

Have you not heard of Listen Mode? It lets you see through walls like in the new Hitman and Tomb Raider. Yes, you can turn it off in the options, but that doesn't change the fact that it's there.

So yeah, Joel has superpowers (For absolutely no reason at all) if you turn it on.

I agree, it kinda dampens the atmosphere of the game.

BUT like you said, it's in the options. I know I can disable it in the options menu, so the game will be pure, grounded and awesome.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution had that yellow glow around interactive objects that fans complained about, but you can disable it and so I did.

Making games more accessible to newcomers/casuals is fine, but as long as it doesn't impact the overall experience and take away from the people who would buy it regardless of the difficulty, I'm fine with a removable option.

I'd like to think of "listen mode" as the easy difficulty. ^_~

After reading through the article, this game is goin to be GOTY, Naughty Dog not only did research on cinema but on science and nature and made a game that are distinct from others, predicting the next outbreak besides zombies in a realistic point of view. The motive behind this is so strong, it brings its own message. ND is always bringing something new and innovative to the table. One of the best developers in the industry and one of my favorites, I really can't wait for this game.
