Microsoft Talks Xbox One Naming, Privacy And More

CNET sits down with Microsoft's Jeff Henshaw to talk about the new Xbox One, including how long it will last, and whether the name's going to be confusing.

"Let me clear that up unequivocally. Xbox One will support the reselling and used game market for Xbox One games. We have not announced details about exactly how it's going to work, or how licenses are going to be exchanged. That's all coming up later in the year. What we have announced is that a used game ecosystem will be supported, so people can breathe easy. They will be able to get used games."

Why do I not feel very secure with this response from this M$ rep.

Riderz13373985d ago

Lol they're dancing around the question. If they aren't planning on charging a fee for playing used games they would have straight up said "we will NOT charge you a fee for playing a used game". Instead we get this PR bullshit.

Pillsbury13985d ago

Microsoft is trying to get away with charging you more fees on top of fees.

darthv723985d ago

that i dont think we are really seeing the whole picture. the slightest grumblings and people go crazy and jump to conclusions WAY to fast.

Now i buy my fair share of used games from Gamestop. And i am aware that any game that has a voucher for DLC has the potential of already been redeemed by the initial purchaser.

So when a store like GS sells a used PC game that has a license, they have to state that the person buying the used game needs to buy a license to play that game. The re-licensing of used games can be quite profitable by the publisher as they are not selling another physical copy but selling a whole other license to another person.

so lets switch gears for a moment and look at the advent of digital downloads. I know they arent the same as physical but just follow along. Any purchase made by a user is tied to that users account. its like that on XBLive, PSN, nintendo eshop as well as Steam and origin.

Now I know i can sign into any other 360 or PS3 as myself and in doing so i can dl anything i have previously purchased/dl and play it on that other unit. I can even play it with friends but the original licensed version is the one that is initially purchased on the system when i made the purchase in the first place.

So on my own ps3 and 360 resides the unlocked version that is playable by anyone else on that same system. The version I dl on another persons unit is only playable if i am the one who is signed in and sharing it with others on their unit.

I think that is how it works with steam as well. I dont use steam much anymore, i did back when Half life 2 first came out so dont be to mad at me if i am getting it wrong.

A game purchased via retail has a license key (it was like that with half life 2) and once that key is redeemed, it can only be reinstalled by the same person. I cant all of a sudden lend my copy of HL2 to a friend and he installs it and plays it using the same key. Now he could but that is where keygens come in and leads to the whole piracy thing and .....

To me, DRM has always been on the back burner for fear in how the public accepts it. Little by little though it has krept in to movies and music and games (on the PC) and the inevitable is happening with console games.

MS coming out and saying...this is what it is, a bold move if you think about it. We know sony said it will be up to the individual publishers if they want to enforce a DRM check on the games but they never said "NO" themselves. Even they know its a hot topic in the retail market and how 2nd hand private sales goes. Im sure they are loving that MS is taking all the heat for this while they themselves were trying to figure out the right way of 'maybe' (i said maybe) doing something similar.

I am just trying to keep the perspective here of what the situation is about and will other parties be involved. Game developers, stores and even the platform holders all know this has been a problem that the consumers never wanted to deal with and never wanted to accept.

There just isnt enough information to really fully understand if there is a benefit to the game companies more so than a hindrance to the consumer. On the surface it seems black and white but that is why there needs to be more disclosure from all parties involved.

darthv723985d ago

you do know there is a difference between XB Live Arcade and XB Indie right?

If an Indie developer wants their game to be on the "Arcade" section and NOT the "Indie" section then they have to work out a publishing deal with a bigger developer.

Sony has an "Indie" section now that is separate from the other PSN published games as well.

In that respect, both services, they have done a good job of making an Indie section for such games. The bigger the publisher, the better the chance of getting your game into the more lucrative section of the live or PS store service.

kagon013985d ago

They're hiding something, and probably we won't like it at all...

Pillsbury13985d ago

They have already confirmed that games will be tied to user accounts, no more selling used games if you like Microsoft. -_-

Eldyraen3985d ago (Edited 3985d ago )

Personally I think they are hiding that physical copy trades are being replaced with 100% digital license transfers. It would help explain a few of the inconsistencies and confusion. In other words discs are being used more as a secondary/nondownloadable distribution system for a true license based console (technically they always were license based but lacked the digital/control possibilities to enforce it).

The "used trade system" that they are eluded to could be a complicated license transfer system that I am not sure how would operate--someone alluded to the fact it would be done through the cloud at one point. Would there be a kind of free market where consumers can decide on values for themselves and trade games independently? Or much more likely be tightly controlled by MS, publishers, etc that defines a value and is strictly policied using yet another "fake" economy?

However it is meant to work MS better nail it and it would be smarter to just allow physical lending/trading/selling as today in the long run. But I fear that isn't really what will happen no matter what they decide.

Maddens Raiders3985d ago

"We haven't shared any of those details yet. The key thing to bear in mind is that in the coming generation, obviously retail sales are going to play a huge part in that ecosystem, and people will continue to buy shiny discs. But increasingly, content sales are going to happen online.

That's what Xbox Live and the Arcade investments on 360 have all been learning towards, and Xbox One is really going to take that to the next level. The entire content portfolio will be available as well."

Nothing that came out of Henshaw's mouth made any go*damn sense. Pure corporate speak jibberish.

ziggurcat3985d ago

"We have not announced details about exactly how it's going to work, or how licenses are going to be exchanged."

yes you have, MS... you've already said that you're going to have to buy the game if you rent it, buy it again if you've purchased it used, or buy it if a friend lends you the disc.

"What we have announced is that a used game ecosystem will be supported, so people can breathe easy. They will be able to get used games."

again... while you can pop in a used copy of a game into your system, you're forcing people to buy it again.

stop acting like this pile of **** doesn't stink, MS.

turnerdc3985d ago (Edited 3985d ago )

Both Microsoft and Sony haven't given completely clear answers on used games. Times are changing and I think they will both handle used games differently to how they're handled today. Whether Xbox One and PS4 will take similar or radically different approaches though is yet to be seen.

http://www.gamespot.com/new...

""It's a massively important issue and I understand why it's one that keeps coming up and will keep coming up, because people want to know what the exact stance is," Denny said.

"In relation to points like that, of course we're mindful of what the game development community wants and what the wider industry issues are with those things. I think in good time that will become clearer," he added.

Denny did not provide a simple yes or no answer, but said Sony will do right by developers and consumers alike.

"It's not something that I feel I have any further announcement or comment to make on, other than to acknowledge with you that it's a massively important issue and of course we are going to do the right thing," he said.

Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida last week confirmed that used games will play on the PlayStation 4. However, it was not made clear if users would have full access to secondhand titles or if they would need to pay to activate the game as a second owner.

"When you purchase the disc-based games on PS4, it should work on any hardware. So that's what I'm saying," Yoshida said at the time."

3-4-53985d ago

Yes we can get used games...Here how:

Have to install to hdd, if you buy a used game from somebody, their physical copy is worthless, which it is anyways and they pay FULL price for a used game code to install to their HDD.

Gone are the days of finding that hidden gem for $15 and it's the last copy and it makes your day.

Gamestop will still exist and will get support from Sony + Wii U.

Microsoft really screwed the pooch on this one.

LoveOfTheGame3985d ago

*Gamestop will still exist and will get support from Wii U.
Fixed

rainslacker3985d ago

Generally if you have to dance around the issue, then it means it's something that we shouldn't breathe easy about. Why not just say "Yes, you can sell your used games exactly the way you can now. In fact, we'll even offer another choice to the consumer and allow them to trade or sell their games using our service".

Adding choice = good
Removing choice = bad

They wont come right out and say it, but they obviously feel console gaming as the main focus is not the way to go. They have made an entertainment box that can play games, it just doesn't interest me.
Maybe they change my mind at E3 but I doubt it

Microsoft's silence on Scorpio puts Xbox One S in a bad place

Destructoid - "We need to know more, Project Scorpio. Yesterday, Microsoft began its E3 press conference by introducing the Xbox One S -- a new, smaller model of Xbox One. It closed the press conference by introducing Project Scorpio -- a significantly more powerful take on the Xbox One."

Yes, the Scorpio will likely cannibalize sales of the Slim to some extent. Some will wait to buy their first X1, and some will wait to upgrade their vanilla X1. It's not the best approach to increased sales, but it's one of the most pro-consumer moves we've seen from MS. Staying completely silent on the Scorpio's existence and releasing only shortly after the reveal would only demonstrate typical corporate greed.

If you buy a Slim in the next 18 months, you do so with full knowledge of the upcoming Scorpio. Any buyer's remorse is your own doing. While they have not given a precise price point on the Scorpio (calling it only a "premium price"), you can rest assured it won't be the $299 of the Slim.

I'm a consumer, not a shareholder, so I support the early reveal. Transparency in their hardware plans, cross-buy with PC, and backwards/forwards compatibility are pro-consumer and deserve praise. Like any of these corporations, MS often deserves our skepticism, but if you are going to voice outrage over the negative, you also have to praise the positive.

This was the right approach in my view, even if it means less sales. They have a long way to go to becoming consumer-friendly, but I can't fault their recent moves.

Eonjay2864d ago

I don't really think the Scorpio actually exists yet. I think it was a haphazard attempt at fighting the leaked Neo across social media. At the end of the conference he struggles to explain why they announced it so early. There are no actual specs. It is a target. An idea.

DivoJones2864d ago

Well to announce it's processing power (teraflops) implies they've settled on their processor, and most device anymore have an APU chip that is both the CPU and GPU. But it's very possible they have a separate GPU to really maximize their video output. Probably won't hear any more from MS about it until next years E3.. hopefully my TV dies before it comes out so I can justify upgrading to a 4K.

Software_Lover2864d ago

Scorpio was "leaked" well before the Sony Neo stuff was.

nix2864d ago

I really have a thought... Every big company before launching a new product does intensive research. I really want to know who their target audience were when they did the QnA. Did they just gather few Xbox hardcore fans and asked them if they would like to see a new powerful console?

The answers were probably a triumph yes! I've seen few Xbox hardliners here but they are so out of touch with their fellow Xboxers. Recent example was QB. How it was hailed as the best looking game and how it was going to outsell everything and how everyone and their grandmas were getting it but hardly even anyone outside this community bought it.

I see the same resemblance here with Scorpio. OMG CAN'T WAIT TO BUY SCORPIO! And what new games are they going to play on it? I have not seen any new announcements made by MS. So all these hype just to play existing games on higher resolution? Is anyone even thinking that logically?

ShottyatLaw2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

That just sounds like an attempt to downplay the Scorpio. You don't negotiate multi-billion dollar contracts with chip manufacturers haphazardly, and negotiating those deals is the first step to bringing any of these devices to fruition.

But let's say you are right. Early in the year, Spencer gives an interview where he drops the idea of the mid-gen hardware upgrade. He then adds that he wants to go up in "big numbers." Then they announce a 6tf 320gb/s machine. If this was all in response to Sony, that means he managed to be first to discuss it, first to announce it to the masses, and managed to build a machine superior to his competitor. So if your theory is right, MS just completely pulled the rug out from under Sony every step of the way.

Regardless, if their response to Neo is to build an even better machine, gamers win. I'll take that.

Windows 10 cannibalize sales of both the Xbox Slim and Xbox Scorpio. The informed consumer purchases a console for their exclusives first and access to 3rd party games. A lot of people are going to realize its smarter to just upgrade their PC since they can get all of the exclusives that way and access to much more content.

Jamesx82x2864d ago

An informed consumer considers those things but you are assuming 1 thing that generally drives people to console over PC is exclusives and thats not always the case. There are other reasons people choose console over PC. Ease of use, using a controller to play games both single and multiplayer. less cheaters in online gaming when your on a closed system like consoles. Where your friends play. Im not saying WIndows 10 wont cannibalize sales because for the person who likes PC gaming and has a PC built for gaming but wanted Xbox exclusives they no longer need to buy one but people play on consoles for lots of reasons and I dont think Windows 10 is gonna be a big issue.

Rookie_Monster2864d ago

Looks like the cannibalizing is not happening as the $399 XB1 Slim is the best selling overall console on Amazon and #10 overall in videogame sales. http://www.amazon.com/best-...

#2 best videogame sellers on Amazon UK, ahead of PSVR http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bes...

This is even before the $299 SKU is available for pre order. imagine the damage that Sku will do!!!

Masterchief_thegoat2864d ago

So far is doing much better in pre order sale than fat Xbox. plus is cheap 4K while it also plays games right now when it hits in aug. plus 4K tv having them good ass deals on Best Buy Amazon etc

They have stayed silent on what it looks like because it's not been finalised , they have talked about it plenty after e3 and how they see the gaming industry

The bottom line is , where you want to accept it or not is that the gaming industry became stale while people where picking up the latest tablet to play the sims or upgrading the PC to play in ultra HD the gaming console was stuck on old powered machines and a limited community

Ms are aiming Scorpio at high end users , who want the best graphics and power and retaining the Xbox community. The Xbox will have three models next year , the basic one , the middle one , and high end ... Each one will be suited to a persons needs. Without lossing games , or being forced to buy new games. The likely hood is that next year , the Xbox one will get re branded as simply Xbox , all dics will ship as Xbox ( no one on the box ) , and will run on any device you have. The machine will be able to tell what settings you have , and allow for 4K , 3D , VR of HD the developers will pick what they put in their games without worrying about making ports for other consoles.

Basically Xbox is re branding and reaching out to more people , Xbox live is the center for this and will connect all users on any device from PC gaming to Xbox one , Xbox one s and tablets and mobile

You will be in control of when you upgraded and hep you play not the manufacturing company

http://time.com/4369910/xbo...

That should explain it

Underworld2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

Revealing both at the same time just sucked a lot of the spotlight and excitement away from the Slim and could possibly hurt its sales. They revealed Scorpio too soon. Should have revealed it at next year's E3. I thought the Slim looked nice but I wouldn't even bother now.

Software_Lover2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

There is no silence.

Xbox One s is a smaller version of the Xbox One with HDR and 4k disc playback.

Scorpio is a more powerful Xbox Hardware that will play the same games and will release holiday 2017.

WTF is there more to understand?

Sunny_D2864d ago

Idk like the actual look of the hardware and an entire spec sheet and maybe some games to showcase its power? Better than some video of random people telling us "this thing is a monster!"

343_Guilty_Spark2864d ago

So the Neo will cannibalize PS4 sales....dumb article.

HallowedSoul12864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

if it releases 4-4.5 teraflops better than the original ps4 it just might if it actually is only 2 times better instead of 5 than no it wouldnt(tbh actually even at 2 times better there's a chance it could). your analogy is flawed because as of right now ps4 neo is in the position to only be 2 times better than original ps4 whereas the scorpio is in the position to be 5 times better, which is almost a two gen gap lol. why would any gamer support a console thats 5 times inferior for measly savings of a few hundred bucks. lets get logical here guys if the scorpio really does release with 6 teraflops and 4k gaming it will definitely cannibalize the other two sku's and i'd expect no less from an obvious next gen system. 900p gaming to 4k gaming is not an advanced console thats next gen and we all know it. with consoles you can't skip 1080p, 1440p and call it the same gen with a straight face come on now guys. lets call a spade a spade here.

Why chat changed on Xbox One and how Microsoft plans to improve it

Polygon - "Earlier this week, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb confirmed in a post on Reddit that Microsoft was aware of problems with and confusion over the Xbox One party chat service and that the issues will "get better."

We had a chance this week to sit down with Xbox Group Program manager Jeff Henshaw to ask him why chat changed and how it will evolve over the coming months and years."

Lalanana3786d ago

N4GJD3785d ago

@christocolus

I am definitely not biased towards any console(s). But after owning multiple Xbox 360's since the day it was released. I would not own any Microsoft console again (at least not before buying each of the competitors first). I am done with all the bullshit from Microsoft, and their software, products, and services. They won't even admit that RROD affected 99% of launch consoles (and who knows how many following). Their controllers don't even a couple years without severe issues with the analog sticks. They had a couple relatively strong years of exclusive games, with variety and quality, but then it was pretty much only halo or gears each year. Not to mention they destroyed Rare, and heavily shifted focus even more towards younger gamers (ex. Kinect). They even attempted to blame me for losing all my download history etc, even though that's in the cloud. Did I mention they pull so much shit out of their butt and people fall for it? ETC.

This is precisely why I don't gravitate towards multitasking devices.. I have to do memory dumps on my phone daily so video playback and basic internet navigation works. Apps suddenly close or terminate and its incredibly frustrating. I see the exact same issues occuring with X1. I think having 3 simultaneous OS's was an ambitious idea but the execution is flawed.

Its clear that the system needed a longer gesticulation period but for 5he sake of competitiveness was released early. Essentially early adopters are beta testing the system and Microsoft is updating as they go..

Why change something that was perfect on the 360? I don't get it. Sony needs to upgrade party chat on the ps4 too. If I'm in a party, I don't want to here the voices of other people in the game. I just want I here the people in the party chat. Maybe there is a way to do that? I can't find it.

Prime1573786d ago

I'm on my phone and can't check now, but I think you can change that option on the party chat screen, on the left. I could be wrong as I fiddled with that on day one.

forcefullpower3786d ago

You can change the setting on the party chat screen

Deathdeliverer3786d ago

Just here to reinforce what you said. There's a option to hear game chat and party chat or just party chat. It's "prioritize *****" in the party screen.

kingPoS3786d ago

Quote: -the entire console was basically consumed with exactly one thing — the game that it was running — everything that happened atop of it, like the tiny Xbox guide you used to get when you pushed the Xbox 360 button, or chat, had to be incredibly thin, little layers that basically enabled a tiny bit of functionality while keeping out of the way of the game.

It it wasn't broke why 'fix' it. If they had a low impact solution why didn't MS scale it.

Gateway MT6706 2008

Deathdeliverer3786d ago

After reading the article I did see one thing I didn't know about. Microsoft is possibly working on a way to let a friend take over a game for you. I only knew of Sony saying this. If that rumor is true, Sony better speed it up. Microsoft could release it first and it would be a successful Jack move.

Xbox One Engineering Manager: “Not at All” Tricky to Get Blu-Ray Licensed for Xbox One

Some have been wondering what kind of pact with the devil Microsoft had to do in order to get a Blu-Ray drive in the Xbox One, mostly because due to the format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, the format is commonly seen as owned by Sony (which is actually inaccurate. Sony is one of the leading members of the Blu-Ray Association, but doesn’t “own” the format).

Xbox One Engineering Manager Jeff Henshaw explained that it wasn't tricky at all to get the deed done.

not tricky just pay sony cold hard cash.

Abriael3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Not just Sony mind you, the Blu Ray association is made up of several companies. 18 board members (including Sony) and about 30-40 others, even if I'm not sure the "supporters" get anything from the royalty fees. probably not.

theBAWSE3798d ago Show
hakeem09963798d ago

Why would it be tricky ? It's not like Sony can deny them access to Bluray . You guys forgetting that windows OS is on Sony Products. Stupid article ! This article is as stupid as comments like " I hate MS and Xbox,I'll get Titanfall on PC " like MS is not getting paid when you play a PC game .SMFH

H0RSE3798d ago

@theBAWSE

you concluded all of that from the pre-launch and launch of the consoles?

Seeing how this gem is looking to last close to 10 years, after the life cycles of the systems, or at least well into them, we'll see how things are going, then perhaps what you say will actually make sense...

nukeitall3798d ago

Sony cannot deny MS from getting blu-ray on Xbox One. That's a fact!

Nobody has that power, because it is an association of many different companies gone together to agree to license to anyone that pays up. The licensing fee is pretty small on the large scale as well, as it is intended to promote more devices using blu-ray to sell the discs with content.

That is where the money is.

This isn't like what MS can do with Windows, and stop anyone from licensing it, because they are the sole owner. That said, MS would never do this. It would be stupid!

UltimateMaster3798d ago

Oh no! Let's not give pennies to Sony for each Games sold! They'll get rich!.... No they won't.

They just wasted everyone's money that bought HD-DVDs.

Mosiac773797d ago (Edited 3797d ago )

Can anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Microsoft decided not to include the HDDVD on the Xbox 360 because they believe that digital was the future and now they went on to add blue ray on XB1. I wonder if to shiva is mad at Microsoft.

PhantomT14123797d ago

@hakeem0996

Well, if someone play Titanfall on PC, MS is not getting paid like they would if someone played it on Xbox (no royalties for each copy) and Titanfall is not a "system seller" on PC while it could be for the Xbox One.
Still I understand your point. I mean, I'm typing this comment on a Sony Vaio Duo tablet PC with a big Windows logo stamped on it :D

its still a win for Sony even if they do get Blu-Ray Microsoft has to pay Sony to use it.

DoctorJones3798d ago

Sony sells products that include MS products, everyone wins.

mhunterjr3798d ago

A 'win' for Sony? You do know that Sony and MS are partners in several sectors, and licence each other for quite a few different products.

I_am_Batman3798d ago

Sony gets money from MS for using Blu-Ray. MS gets money from Sony for using Windows on their Notebooks for example. Business as usual. Nothing to write home about.

nukeitall3798d ago

The licensing fee is tiny, and the main win is from blu-ray disc sales from Sony Pictures and not the licensing.

dlocsta3798d ago

You do realize that bluray has to pay MS for every device and disc made don't you? Just one of the patents that MS owns in bluray is the DirectX used to show the movie! And if you think it is not lucrative, Google pays MS $2 billion a year for patents in Android phones. I say it is close to a wash. Of course the bluray people are getting a little more out of the deal or it wouldn't be worth it, but no one here is hurting from a lack of cash flow on bluray.

No they don't pay sony . Sony does pay Microsoft to use theiir OS in VIOS laptops and some software patents that Microsoft owns. Just like Microsoft makes 2 billion dollars alone from google. Stop hating on microsoft because whether you like it or not everyone uses MS products one way or another.

Because M$ don't want to loose any more consumers after all the gamers complain bout having 3 DVD disc just to play a game one by one. And how can they say its tricky they have billion of dollars

And do nothing with it, as the day-one patch for Forza 5 suggests.

The 360 does movies. Could have done them HD-DVD from the console, but MS couldn't wait six months to clear the tech. Nevermind the mess they made of the disc industry pushing their menu codec.

There's no reason for people to be surprised because MS and Sony have always done business together outside of gaming

JBSleek3798d ago

People take this way too seriously. These two companies do business all of the time and it isn't an issue. Sony needs MS software and MS needs Sony hardware.

True dude.
How many laptops has Sony sold with some incarnation of Windows installed on it?

famoussasjohn3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Lol exactly. Who do you think Sony pays for the licensing fee for Windows on their laptops, desktops etc?

Lol Mister_Dawg and I posted the same thing at the same time.
