Is Single Player Under More Threat Next Gen?

Destiny (will have campaign)
Beyond Good & Evil 2 (Ubisoft just announced it's coming to ps4 and xbox one)

and much more that I can't remember. I think we'll be fine if THIS many are already about to come out despite the fact the systems aren't even out yet.

The majority of those include multiplayer. Thief, The Vil Within, Infamous and Wolfenstein are the only games on that list that a purely single player.

So what? U act like the MP has an impact on the SP. The SP is the main focus of all the games I mentioned (except MAYBE Killzone).

It does have an impact? Games that include multiplayer have to spread their resources across both areas of the game. If a game doesn't include multiplayer at all, all of those resources goes to make a polished single player experience. Obviously not every game turns out well, but games like Watch Dogs are incorporating single player and multiplayer together. If you've read the details about that game they can sort of invade your world like Dark Souls etc.

It's not that those games won't have good single player content, but in games like Watch Dogs etc, what if players don't want any involvement with others?

I think - hope - that devs learned from the mistake of tacking on MP this gen, but who knows.

Honestly, at this point how can you not make a SP God of War title and tack that onto MP? The trick was making MP work in GOW, not coming up with a SP campaign.

And though they did indeed do a decent enough job, lack of extra weapons and how rushed you acquire the different "flavors" to your blades is just too telling.

They've certainly done a much better job in recent months. God of War being the first example that comes to mind. Mass Effect 3 as well.

Multiplayer will continue to be tacked on because developers don't want people trading in their games. They feel if you have a multiplayer element to go back to, and DLC to keep you coming back that you'll keep the game.

i feel that single player games are a thing of the past now..games that shouldnt/werent multi. have suffered

I like some single player games, but you have to admit if it has a really good multiplayer that alone extends the life of the game a long way.

The subject of the demise of the single player game is lame. Anyone touting this subject obviously doesn't understand gaming at all. If single player dies, gaming dies. The roots of gaming are in single player. Businesses die, great civilizations die because they forget what made them great to begin with. For gaming, that means a great story, a great adventure. Year after year, the games of the year are games of the year because they manage to do more than offer an unending online fragfest. When has a multiplayer only game been GOTY? Single player is the heart and soul of gaming. Without a captivating story, you might as well put a Michael Bay movie in the disk slot and call it a day.

Although this is the author's opinion, I have to disagree. If anything, it's multiplayer (in the traditional sense, i.e. local/split-screen) that is under threat. There were/are numerous games this gen, that should have had a traditional multiplayer layout, but didn't.(i.e. Anarchy Reigns, a throwback to old school beat em up's, which almost always included 2 player local co-op, such as Double Dragon)Instead, the focus was "single" player and online multiplayer. Besides, in most cases, multiplayer for a single player game is a versus layout, and doesn't impact a player's single player experience in any way.

Don't forget, MS says if you don't connect to the internet once a day then even single player, OFFLINE games won't work.
