Sony proves PS3 support will be strong even after PS4 release

When the Playstation 4 was revealed, many wondered just how long the Playstation 3 would be supported. Traditionally, Sony has been good with supporting their legacy systems well after a successor's release. The Playstation 1 was supported well beyond the Playstation 2's release. And the Playstaton 2 received support well after the Playstation 3 release. However, some people may need proof that their Playstation 3 systems won't have to be put to pasture just yet. We'll illustrate three reasons as to why the Playstation 3 will still thrive even with the successor out (PlayStation, PS3, PS4)

not to mention
one of the thing's people have overlooked is this very big announcement.

Dear Unity developers, community, friends.

In our tireless march towards world domination (okay, perhaps merely game industry domination), we’re proud to announce that we’ve just entered into a strategic partnership with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring out tools for development for every single of SCE’s PlayStation platforms! Of course, we already offer PS3 support and will continue to do so through Unity’s updates. But now we’ll be working with SCE to build out tools for PS4, PS Vita, PSM, and SCE’s upcoming cloud gaming service.

How significant is this deal:

Unity is now being used by 53.1% of developers (according to Game Developer’s mobile and social technology survey.with hundreds of games released on both Android and iOS devices.

In 2009, Unity began offering a version of their product for free. The number of registered developers began growing quickly following the announcement. In April 2012, Unity realized new heights of popularity as their count of registered developers hit 1 million, 300,000 of which use Unity on a regular monthly basis.

this alone, along with the fact that the PS3 will be added value for development when the PS4,PSVITA, AND PSN and PSM being able to be used on all three platforms's means develop once and you have that game or application run on all three platforms!

Sony was not just building a PS4 this time it was concentrating on building an ECO system. one of which a networked console like the PS3 will still be part of for quite a while.

No different than any other product. MS, apple, samsung, and google all do it too. That's the way businesses are supposed to run.

you are correct but that was not the way in the past for Sony
the change in how Sony is going forward . Was a drastic change from the way it was in the past. example:

for example developer michael elphick-who is working on Killzone : Mercenary

We believe that it’s touch controls, thumbsticks and backface touchpad , could really help push our game and add to the interactivity and immerse the player in our environments.

We’ve made the jump because of two awesome things Sony have done,

1) The fee to become a publisher has been waived, it’s now free to submit applications to Sony for mobile.

2) Unity 3D teaming up with Sony to produce an 1-click deployment type add-on to Unity, making developing for PlayStation Mobile easier.

3) I can use my Vita as a dev kit for testing without needing another other bits of hardware etc! Win!

This will be an exciting prospect!!

Sony is not going to be dropping the PS3 quickly. the PS3 will have quite a few more years of support because of how the new Eco system for the Playstation Network can be used for game distribution for all playstation platforms not just the new and released units but also the legacy system's starting with the PS3.

You buried the lede

".. SCE’s upcoming cloud gaming service.."

Wah? Is this Gaikai, or something different? And if Gaikai, will there be titles that will be Gaikai-exclusive -- otherwise, the tools would be no different than all the other PS33/PS4/PSv games.

A man thinks this may be his favorite year for PS3 exclusives ever! A man already got his new favorite game in one of his favorite classic franchises in Sly Thieves in Time and the first multiplayer he's been interested in in years with GoW Ascension (nice SP but not as good as 2 or 3 but still very epic). A man will be getting Guacamele soon and play through co-op as it looks like a blast. LoU Survival Edition is preordered and a man is looking forward to getting Puppeteer and Beyond as well. A man can't believe how well Sony supports its systems right up until the end of their time in the spotlight and actually a couple years after. PS3 will have a nice long life as it sells in third world countries and gets future price drops as well as having free PSN with the likely continued indie releases (PS3 can handle those as well as vita and PS4 since they're not taxing on hardware). A man predicts PS3 reaches 105m and wins the gen sales wise by the time it's done considering it's still $250 for the base model.

That's good for Sony and gamers that won't jump to upgrade launch date. Ten year cycle is no myth.
