CDG: Final Fantasy VII Retro Review

"Out of the deep depths of misfortune comes bliss." What's up with reviewers today, huh? Sometimes they review half a game, sometimes they have selective reading, or sometimes they review OLD GAMES -- "OLD GAMES," you say? Yes, games so aged, the baby-boomers have to eyeball it a second time before the motors in their brains clicked, and they started  constructing the connections in their heads. Reviewers have a job to tackle, folks. That occupation consists of appealing to their audience. Critics will critique, and readers will naturally formulate opinions -- it's the natural scheme of things. It doesn't matter the material.

They refer to such reviews as RETRO reviews. Reviewers have made these old games sound, and appear refreshingly new. At least on a word processor. Final Fantasy VII is a game that I played as a wee lad; and now I'm sounding older than I actually am. You see what tangents will do to ya? But do these RETRO games really hold a candle to the imagination of a gro...

10/10 for its time in gaming history!

NukaCola3992d ago

Game visually hasn't aged as well as it should. Id really like to see a polish coat keeping everything from camera angles and game play unaltered.

10/10

Very true. 3D simply does not age well at all. I've long thought a potential FFVII remake would be best-served by re-drawing all of the art at super-high resolution and replacing the 3D models with either cel-shaded models (that could scale better at future resolutions) or hi-res sprites.

And at jjb1981, I would argue that it's a 10/10 for all time, as the gameplay and narrative have aged -quite- well. (and to pre-empt the idiotic "you only like it so much because of nostalgia" argument, let me note that I cam into the series late, and played FFVII -after- playing games like FFX, FFXI, etc.).

@xof

Agreed! I'm playing FF7 through on mu Vita right now and the game sure is a blast. This time I'll finish it too dang it. I've started over douzens of times but only finished it once or twice. *possible spoiler ahead* This time I'll get my enemy skills and slaughter Sepiroth to the very end!

LOL true! In most cases the most beatifull girls are the most annoying ones to live with. It might pay off in the bedroom with lights on but my god other than that life can be frustrating (and expensive). Might want to be sure before knocking her up. No misfires please cause it's the child who suffers for that mistake if it indeed becomes a mistake.

What do you mean aged as well as it should? When it came out it had some of the best graphics on PS1. It was designed for PS1 and a SD TV. It's held up fine if you play it on what it was designed for. On my Vita I think it looks pretty good though by the way... I think its due to the small screen helping to hide the blemishes created by improvement in media.

Apollosupreme3991d ago (Edited 3991d ago )

I do agree that it would be nice to see a higher resolution version come out though. If you've ever watch emulations with filters on a PC of the PS1 version you'll see that it would be very easy to give the game a facelift.

Apparently Square Enix is allergic to money though...

This game has aged, but it's still 10/10 in my book; guess i'm not vain when it comes to graphics. It's like some people only like the girl cause she's cute, when there's so much more to look at.

HarryMasonHerpderp3991d ago

A story I will never forget.
Even the music has stuck with me after all of these years.
I can't picture a scene in FFVII without hearing the soundtrack in my head. One of the best games I have ever played and ever will play.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5213d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5213d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212113d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5212d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5212d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani13d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum13d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman13d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim13d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I disagree Batman

Rise of the ronin sold twice as much as Dragons Dogma 2 this week...but no articles about that. It's only news if a PS exclusive is being outsold.
