How to Deal with a Loss of "Hype" for Older Gamers

"The last game I was truly inexplicably hyped for was Doom3 for the original Xbox. Having only recently delved fully into first-person shooters, Doom3 was to be a change of pace from Halo and its sequel. Halo 2 had me hunting down a copy on the day of launch, eventually securing one from Sainsbury’s (a UK supermarket chain) at a reduced cost from the specialist stores. “Ha” I had thought, “Not only have I managed to get my hands on the best video game OF ALL TIME, but I bought it cheaper than most people”."

Very nice article, I myself had a loss for hype. You are spot on sir.

You guys talk like an old man who go to the Depeche Mode concert and start to talk about how awesome was the '80 ....

If you guys have loss the hype, just do something else ... No offense, really, its just a fact.

In my childhood I love to play magic the gathering ... now I have no more interest, but I will never at any tournament and start to talk how much I'm bored, or why I'm not more hyped or how awesome was the Beta edition ...

Hype is not the same thing as interest or enjoyment.

I don't really get hyped like I used to, counting down the days until games released, or going out for launch events, but I still have a ton of fun with games.

What you're essentially saying is that if you're not hyped up about the new Game of Thrones episodes to need to see them on their air date, and instead just DVR it and watch them when you have time, you should just watch something else.

I thought I had at one point too....then I realized I hadn't done much Handheld gaming over the past decade outside of Advance wars 1&2.

Bought a 3DS and it completely re-excited my love for gaming.

I was getting worn down from same old on xbox 360. Love the 360, but it's a bit generic in the games it offers.

My hype for xbox games and FPS was losing steam...not my love for gaming.

I took a break from the xbox, got a 3DS and tons of DS games I missed out on, as well as getting back in PC gaming for the first time in 7 years and I've discovered everything I had been missing in games for the past 6 years.

Something about Nintendo get's me really hyped for games and gaming.

* 3D Mario, LoZ U, Mario Kart U, Super Smash Brothers U & 3DS......those right there have me really excited...I could play those for a year...just those games and not be sick of gaming.

Very few games excited me this entire generation, but not to the point of getting me hyped, the likes of King Of Fighters 13, Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow, Vanquish, Yakuza games, Demon Souls, & Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker were the ones that really hyped me. Pretty much it.

I was pretty hyped when I first got Rock Band. Those first two weeks I was bangin on those drums like no ones business.

I'd like to start playing again, but I'm too lazy to get the instruments from under my bed and set it up lol.

Hooray, I am special. The bus I rode to school on was right.

Edit- oh and nice article by the way. This is pretty much how I'm feeling at the moment except I fell out of gaming for most of the PS2 era, or the best years of it anyway. My mind was blown by getting back into games by playing Bioshock and I think I've been chasing that high ever since. I have to agree that being able to buy any new game that comes out (though I'm faaaaar from rich) dampens the thrill of buying a new game quite a bit. Also I think I'm just getting too used to games as a medium.

I will not say I am growing out of games though, a friend of mine (who only ever really played Call of duty) told me that he had grown out of games the other day and my blood is still boiling. I'm most likely going to go on a friendship ending rant about appreciating games as a valid artistic medium at him soon.
