Defiance Is Hurting Defiance

Baden of WGB writes: "If nothing else Trion Worlds deserve kudos for attempting something very different, a blending of videogame and TV show to try and create one world wherein the events of either medium can affect the other. The result of this mad experiment was Defiance, a third-person shooter in MMO guise.

But I’m worried that Defiance is hurting Defiance." (Culture, Defiance, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

On a slightly off-topic note I've still not yet managed to hunt down a legendary weapon, though I may not be a high enough EGO rating to find any, I suppose.

Mind you, I've heard people who do have them say they're not worth the time it took to get hold of them. Can anyone on here offer up an opinion?

Back on topic a little, I do like this weeks episode tie-in. it feels like the first proper crossover we've had, even if the mission itself is still dull.

Most weapons have pretty similar stats, no matter what rarity they are. Legendary weapons are slightly better but you can majorly upgrade other rarity weapons to be just as strong using mods. Find a weapon type you're comfortable with (SMG, LMG, Infector, whatever) and try upgrading a blue or purple weapon (might have to add mod slots) and you'll still have a decently powerful weapon.

I don't agree totally with the author, but even he admits to being too harsh. The game takes a lot of resources including time to make changes. This is not like a show where you just change a script mid scene. I think the game will get better because Trion is behind it. This is one MMO where I am not yawning 10 minutes after starting because it can be HARD. If they would only make the death penalty harsher, I would be happier! But I like the game and show!

I agree that it takes a lot of resources to change a game, and Trion have a lot of potential to work with, but the point is that the game should have gotten the basic themes and ideals of the show sorted out at the conceptual state before it ever went into production, otherwise what was the point? Defiance (the game) could literally be any MMO at the moment, because it doesn't match up with the show in any way bar the names of things. Take off the Defiance name and nobody would be able to tell it had anything to do with the show, and that's where the entire concept of a cohesive universe went fundementally wrong, for me, if you see what I mean.

I don't agree, there are missions that go back and forth from the show to game, not a lot. I took the game and show and being similar and different since there in two different areas (Missouri and California), but in the same world. But you need to excuse me that I am a old gamer and I don't have preconceived notions to the game (or any game), I like most if not all games!

It was a pretty massive endeavor, and isn't great. Show uses a ton of resources and, unfortunately, is just kind of mediocre. I have the feeling that if the show was a web series instead of a cable broadcast, it would probably do a lot better and be more easily forgiven for not being amazing. Defiance has so many amazing shows to compete with right now, someone coming from watching GoT would be super disappointed (even though GoT is a high standard).

Whats GoT?

Game of Thrones. To be fair, mind, Game of Thrones are radically different shows with very different tones.

I would think that they are in direct competition with Syfy last, greatest sci-fi show. Battlestar Galactica. Which was an awesome show. In fact SyFy tapped these guys to help with Defiance.
WolfLeBlack  +   1001d ago
Yes and no, I suppose. Battlestar is long since finished, and so there's really no competition between them, as such.

And again, there very different styles of show. Defiance is a more light-hearted, fun show, whereas Battlestar was far more grity and bleak.

If anything, I'd say Defiance is maybe in direct competition with Revolution, in terms of who is managing to grab the ratings. Revolution still has a sort of light tone to it that makes it kind of comparable to a degree.

Game of Thrones

Edit: post went wrong this was a respone to MilkMan.

The only reason I watch the Defiance tv show is because I play the game. Normally, I don't watch tv at all and I watch full episodes of the show on syfy web site.
