No More Mass Effect, Please

CheatCC Says: "Word on the Internet is that BioWare is investigating possible Mass Effect spin-offs. While I probably wouldn't mind a Sleeping Dogs style game starring Garrus, or a game aiding Wrex in his rebuilding of Tuchanka, SimCity style; I wouldn't get crazy excited about either. Even a rip-off of the forthcoming Mew-Genics with Mordin wouldn't make me bat an eye. (I lie – I'd love to play as a crazy, Varren-hoarding Mordin.) A new game, no matter how brilliant, won’t change the fact that Mass Effect doesn't need a spin-off, prequel, or even sequel." (BioWare, EA, Industry, Mass Effect, PS3, Xbox 360)

I would love a new Mass Effect. But i don't want a prequel that to me seems lazy
EVILDEAD360  +   998d ago
More Mass Effect please. Just don't play it if you don't like the series.

I do like the series, i just don't want a prequel

EVILDEAD360  +   998d ago
@ Mega,

Yeah the whole prequel thing wouldn't be as strong.

Give me 1,000 years after the trilogy

I would prefer to see the aftermath of the Reaper War. The universe is large enough that some unknown race could try to come in and take over everything. See how well all those alliances held together in the end, or if it was just a one time deal. The amount of political intrigue that could bring to the story would be cool.

Unfortunately, no matter which way they decide to handle it, people are probably going to complain about it.:(

Edit: I also feel a prequel would be kind of weak, since they already established that the Reapers did all this in cycles, and it was Shepard who finally broke it. I suppose they could just have some other race, like one going against the protheans during their conquest.

I'd rather have a new KOTOR now that EA has the SW license.
EdgarOD  +   997d ago
I agree no prequels, there's just something about them that doesn't catch my attention much. I'd prefer a sequel but taking place way into the future. Maybe you're huge choices will make into account. Like the Quardians being dead or everybody is indocrinated.

Speak for yourself. More ME makes me happy, I'm one of the few who enjoyed the Extended Cut ending.

Xer0_SiN  +   998d ago
why not? i only recently jumped aboard (when me2 was first released for ps3) and the lore is awesome. shepard is cool, but i dont need to be attached to this character indefinately. make us a new protagonist; simple.

Hey, if you don't want anymore ME for the x-box, the Play Station would gladly give Bioware more time (the time it'd usually spend making it for the x-box) to make a great port for it
Dr Pepper  +   998d ago
So Bioware creates an awesome universe for gamers to explore full of interesting history and captivating stories, and there are people who don't want the option to play more of them in the future? To see what happens after the events of the 3rd game? Who wouldn't want that option? Seems like a rather foolish opinion for this writer to have, but said person is entitled to it.

I doubt the lead designers worked so hard for so many years and thought to themselves "well that was a ton of hard work greeted by great financial and critical success, let's hope nobody ever has the chance to enjoy another story from this universe again."

"well that was a ton of hard work greeted by great financial and critical success"

Then they created the synthesis ending, good job.
Dr Pepper  +   998d ago
Your abrupt comment gives off a disgruntled vibe. It seems like you didn't like one of the endings, the ending that they probably wont continue with but included to give gamers an option to end the story their own way.

It is a major problem with creating a choice driven game, but still wanting to convey the story the developer had in mind, and the experiences the developer wants the player, and the character, to go through.

Perhaps they will go with one determined ending, or maybe try something really ambitious and start a new game off with branching stories depending on the endings (which they would probably do anyways concerning what the player chose with other events in ME3). However, it doesn't seem like you are interested in conversation judging by your short comment so I will just end it there.
Imalwaysright  +   998d ago
Yeah the lead designers definetely worked hard... worked hard at lying to us about Mass Effect and falsely advertising their game.

Edit- "It is a major problem with creating a choice driven game" Please don't go off topic. I don't know which game you're talking about. We're talking about Mass Effect trilogy which certainly is not a choice driven game. It did tried to be a choice driven game but it isn't as none of the choices we made had any impact in the ending.

"It is a major problem with creating a choice driven game"

I must have played the wrong game because all of my choices were overridden because I picked the wrong ones Apparently, but it's not like it mattered anyway with how the game ended.
Dr Pepper  +   998d ago
I don't know if both of you (00 and Iamalwaysright) meant to side with me or not, but you are just proving what I said. I brought up the challenge of creating choice driven games while still having a vision for the story, a vision for what the character is to experience or not to experience. I blatantly brought up this problem and it is the same issue in both of the witcher games so far. The Witcher 1 and the Witcher 2 both have choice driven events, but they both still end up at the same sequence, the same events.

I recognize what you guys are saying, I seriously do. The difference is, I go into the game recognizing this and I don't let it ruin my gaming experience. I still enjoyed the Witcher 2, even though both stories didn't have wildly different endings. The same can be said, for me, with Mass Effect. Obviously this was not the case for you two.
MysticStrummer  +   998d ago
I didn't care for Mass Effect personally. I traded in the trilogy before finishing ME2.

Having said that, writing an article begging for no more of a game that many people did enjoy really shows the current state of gaming journalism.

WitWolfy  +   998d ago
I dont care anymore, the game is dead to me.. Whats the use of making a spin off if the whole galaxy is doomed to go back to the stone age anyways.. God I hate BW and how they ruined Mass Effect for a lot of people...

You know what release a new game.. I dare ya.. I DOUBLE DARE YA!!! Then see how many fans you've lost thanks to your shitty writing!

The old saying "the lord giveth, and the lord taketh away" comes to mind. You may hate them for the ending, but I wonder what company/creative director you thank for the stories leading up to it? Certainly not the Bioware you hate.

Gamers have a great way of blowing things way out of proportion. Before I had time to play ME3, I heard people talking about some petition for the ending, how the series was ruined, how "it didn't feel like Mass Effect" (editorial guy on gametrailers) etc. You would think that the greatest disgrace to all entertainment mediums in the history of mankind had just occurred from the steady stream of bitching.

When I finally played it, I never experienced the horror that these people had mentioned. The regular ending was short for the ending of a trilogy, I'll give you that, but "ruining it for a lot of people"? "Shitty writing"? "whats the use of making a spin off if the whole galaxy is doomed to go back to the stone age anyways"? Get over yourself. You clearly have no creative thought if you don't see any way to continue a massive story like this even with [spoiler] the mass effect relays damaged [end spoiler]. Shitty writing? There were, arguably, the best story elements present in the 3rd one. You truly saw the sacrifice of well liked characters being played out, in a way that connected to their story (not just "so and so died because you chose the wrong person for that job in the suicide mission). I could go on, but I doubt you would have anything worth while to say in return.
WitWolfy  +   998d ago
Your shitting me right... I'm a hardcore Me fan, was over obsessed with how shitty the ending was for like 7 months..

And yes I could've written a better story and given the fans the satisfaction they felt they so deserved... Or so I believe, what we HARDCORE fans got was a middle finger cop out!

Face it Casey Hudson lied to us.... Lied to us in our faces... I can post numberous quotes.. and numberous memes oo for that, but I take it you could'nt see the plot holes htat are Mass Effect 3...

Here is my exact feelings on Mass Effect 3, a long bu brilliant opinion piece

You claim you could write a better story. I'm just going to say that writing for videogames, in a way to stay compelling, focused, and can find relevance among the real meat that is the gameplay, is more difficult than it is to write for film.

Now, add on to that the new things they were trying with this game in terms of player choice influencing the story (you can still claim it was worthless, or whatever, but you cannot deny they made the attempt). Perhaps you could have written a better one, but I wouldn't bet on it. Considering how angry you appear to be about it, that was some fantastic writing to get you that hooked.

Since we are out of bubbles, you can PM if you want to continue the conversation.

@witwolfy: I hate when you crazy people lump all of us 'hardcore' fans in with you. I've been a fan since the very beginning and thought the EC endings were completely fine. The only thing that disappointed me was lack of a boss battle.

Once again, dont throw the term 'hardcore' around as though you're of the majority opinion. You're not. Most of the fanbase actually hates people like you for the amount of babyish crying you did last year, still.

Its a series of videogames, grow up, deal with it, or move on. Don't drag the people who want more games down to your level.

Yes more please, I can't get enough of Mass Effect. For me Mass Effect is not about the destination but it's about the journey, and it was awesome!!!

Whether or not the Ma$$ Effect $erie$ "need$" a new $tory i$ $omething that I'm $ure EA will take into "account" e$pecially when you con$ider how much the fir$t Ma$$ Effect $tory needed to be continued.

The universe of the game is not the story. The story was about what happened to Shepard in the first game. If you've ever read Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces" and/or Vogler's "A Writer's Journey", you'd see that, storywise, there was no point to any sequel, let alone a spin-off.

Of cour$e, EA type$ would certainly $ay otherwi$e in defen$e of their arti$tic creation, but don't kid yourself.
Igniter  +   997d ago
I agree that the Universe is not the story but the Universe(actually that should be galaxy) has other stories it can tell. The next ME should do like Skyrim did when it advanced the Elder Scrolls story by a 150 years. A fresh start with just some hints of the past.

they have turned mass effect into a tame shooter where you just fight wave after waves of enemies. Bioware wont pull the plug but it only gets worse from here on
