How Much Do Game Covers Really Matter?

Quote: "Pretty boxes are created to attract people to them, and most gamers would be quite content to purchase a blank piece of paper as the cover of a box if it included their favourite game inside. And so, the idea here is that those people who would be attracted by the pretty boxes are either inherently not gamers, or prone to falling prey to pretty boxes.

These are the types of people who will pay serious money for a game that has an alien from James Cameron’s Aliens on the cover, because Aliens… and we all know the folly of that action. " (BioShock: Infinite, PC, PS3, The Last Of Us, Xbox 360)

Means alot for the average joe, like a guy i know said ''dude, look at that guy, he's so badass!''

was the cod cover, he instant buyed it not even knowing anything except what the cover offered about it.
/sigh

Don't matter that much for hardcore gamers but maybe for them nerds.. screw the box.. it's what's inside that counts..and when you have them on your selves you can just see the back of it..

They make a big first impression to uninformed gamers. So it is important to have a striking cover when selling retail.

I think it was Kevin Levine who explained the points stated above when Bioshock Infinite was getting all that crap for its cover.

didn't Naughty Dog say Ellie was the focus of the story? even the trailers seem to direct that. Just because she's an AI doesn't mean she shouldn't be on the cover. Just because you're controlling the character doesn't mean it needs to be on the cover. It really depends what the game is about.

Exactly. Great point.

Ellie, we've been told, is the focal point of the story, even though Joel is the protagonist you play as. In fact it's their overall relationship that comes with Joel's task. I'm glad Naughty Dog and Sony have the good sense and trust the audience whilst representing their game well.

I won't even buy the game without a cover or if the case is too damanged. I have a collection on display, so to me, yeah, it matters.

This. I don't want an ugly cover or beat up case, even if I'm the only one who's gonna see it. So I hope they put some work into the cover art.

Will it necessarily stop me from buying a game? No; if I want it, I'll still get it. But I'd definitely prefer it for a game to have an attractive cover.

It interests those who know nothing about the game and stumble upon it.

It does nothing for the guy who had it pre-ordered and was in line to buy it on release.

Thats the difference.

A game cover never has any effect on me, if it did then i would probably never buy a game ever, most look rubbish.

Well to me the cover should give you the gist of what the game is going to offer, and should represent the game fairly accurately. For people following the games(like the many people on this site) it's purely for aesthetics(we like the way it looks on our shelves) but for the average person who just goes based off what they see on the box in the store it's very important. there's a lot of fantastic franchises i would have missed out on as a kid if it were not for their box art. The first time i seen the ICO cover(the original ICO cover not the horrid US version) i knew the game had something special, if i were to see the Us version instead i wouldn't have given it a second thought, it looked like a generic game published by PBS or something.

So when a game cover is very Cliche it doesn't necessarily effect my standing with the game, but i'm rather disappointed that they feel they have to resort to the "dudebro" audience to sell their games such as the ordeal with the Bioshock Infinite cover art, i mean if you went to go see a film like say Pan's Labyrinth and when you got to the theater the cover was of her walking towards the camera head down eyes up with embers and ash flying all over the place fill of grunge i'm pretty sure you would second guess if you want to see that film if you didn't already know what it was about.
