The Five Worst Zelda Games

ZI writes: Talking about what game is your personal favorite in the series is a rather popular talking point. We all have various opinions and enjoy several different facets of the Zelda kingdom that at any given point we could prefer one game over another. What we don't talk about are the games that are arguably at the bottom end of the spectrum. In the end, none of the Zelda games are bad. I don't even know if Nintendo knows how to make a bad Zelda game, but in my humble opinion I believe I have compiled a list of five games that are probably at the bottom of my list of Zelda titles. Games I will probably not be replaying anytime soon. (3DS, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Retro, The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Wii)

all the phillips ones, it was such a bad move by nintendo sell the rights to Zelda and other classics at the time.

I wonder what's for dinner?

But on a serious note, Ocarina is in either the number 1/2 spot (being the best) with majoras mask for me.
Skyword Sword is definitely the worst console zelda, the only one I and several other friends who have played all of the zeldas couldn't bring ourselves to finish due to its repetition of areas, lack of exploring and just plain linear boringness.
Best handheld version is Links Awakening, mainly for nostalgia purposes.

@FriedGoat Skyward Sword is definitely the worst. Very disapointing game, still a good game, but no where near the usual Zelda quality. Despite those cel shaded graphics I felt like the whole world and all the characters lacked soul. I feel like I'm in the minority of this but my favorite 3d zelda is Twilight Princess. Loved how big it was and the dark moody atmosphere. Ocarina of Time is probably right next to it tho, haven't played MM but I plan to by the end of summer.

Also I loved playing through the original, thought it was a masterpiece. The dungeon layout was somewhat repetitive but the gameplay was excellent and the whole exploration aspects were awesome.

Nintendo didn't sell the rights. They gave Phillips permission to create 2 Mario and 2 Zelda games for developing the CD-ROM attachment to the SNES for very little funding from Nintendo...

The zeldas I didnt really like were wind waker, and all the top down view ones, probably due to me starting with ocarina of time. Going back to the snes/nes/gameboy ones and expecting wind waker to be like ocarina of time was just setting myself up for a disappointment.

Well the author himself says there are no bad zelda games. Assuming the cdi games don't count I suppose.

5. Ocarina of Time
4. The Minish Cap
3. Four Swords
2. The Legend of Zelda
1. Phantom Hourglass

I strongly disagree!
I liked the minish cap and I love OoT. Wind waker is my favourite though.

i own every zelda game complete in box even the cdi ones and the windwaker variants

This guy is totally on another planet. That he can put both OoT and the original LoZ on his list tells me his concept of fun is equivalent to watching a bug zapper kill mosquitoes.
The list should read:
5. Zelda II: Link's Adventure
4. Skyward Sword
3. Twilight Princess
2. Majora's Mask
1. Both of the 3DO titles
LoveOfTheGame  +   338d ago
I agree with OoT and LoZ, they should never be outside the top 5 best Zelda games. But slow your role their with Majora's Mask, it was the first game that didn't have Zelda even in it and had some great concepts with time management and an overall darker theme.

I don't think it's better than OoT, but every time I bust out the N64 I'm always itching to play Majora's Mask instead. I think most people would agree it is easily in the top 5 best Zelda games.
Jyndal  +   338d ago
If MM had been under another name, I wouldn't have an issue with it, but as a Zelda title, it made no sense. It felt like a cheap cop-out to milk the success of OoT. Also, like you said, there was no Zelda....IN A ZELDA GAME.
The time management aspect was nothing more than a time sink to avoid having to build another world as large as OoT's had been, and there's just something mind numbing about playing a game based on the concept of Bill Murray's movie Groundhog Day.
No Hyrulian lore.
No new characters.
Just a cash grab on the same engine on a console that was on it's way out.
Pozzle  +   338d ago
HDU. Majora's Mask is a thing of beauty.
wampdog29  +   338d ago
They weren't on the 3DO. It was the CD-i
kirbyu  +   338d ago
wampdog29 is right. And there were 3 not 2.

He has Ocarina of time on the number 5 spot. Obviously, it is 1 of the best Zelda games of all time. He must be from another planet.
wheresmymonkey  +   338d ago
He can't understand what made ocarina special.. Its the first openworld 3d game and the first tome the series was in 3d too. Its ground breaking you dolt. Also the stories epic, it looked amazing a tthe time and is still just as entertaining now as it was all those many moons ago.

Another one who got stuck in the Water Temple lol
LoveOfTheGame  +   338d ago
@andrewer
This made me laugh, as my fiance finally beat the Water Temple a couple days ago and without looking up what to do I might add.

Yep, I think she is finally taking her video game training seriously so she can try to take on Dark Souls and get a new car if she beats it.

Kudos to her even I looked up a guide and I usually try to avoid doing that.
LoveOfTheGame  +   338d ago
She always uses guides, and it's something I just hate to see for just beating the game. I usually have to sit there, watch her, and hit her hand ever time she starts to get on her phone.

I'm fine with guides if your trying to get extra stuff on like a second playthrough, Final Fantasy Weapons and extra GFs or Aeons or whatever, but to use a guide to play the entire game for you goes against what a game is.
kirbyu  +   338d ago
I'm stuck in the Zora place. What are you supposed to do?
kirbyu  +   338d ago
How did this guy forget the CD-i games and Zelda 2?
RAFFwaff  +   338d ago
i would say that this guys trolling the zelda franchise, but honestly he isnt even smart enough to do that. everyone is entitled to his opinions but his read like a failed high school student. utter garbage. then i looked at his profile picture (with his mom??) and it all made sense.

Aside from the Phillips games - I have loved EVERY Zelda game since the beggining (played em all - including the Oracle games & minish cap). However; I loathed Skyward Swords motion controls - they bogged down the experience for me (which is a shame since it was such an emotional & beautiful game), and Phantom Tracks (while fun and cleaver) was disapointing, tedious, and a wee bit confusing.
