PlayStation 4 Will Be More Profitable Than Its Predecessor

Sony doesn’t expect the PlayStation 4 to nuke its bank balance to quite the same degree as the PlayStation 3. Those of you that were around at the start of the generation will recall the manufacturer’s current generation console almost crippling the company, even in spite of its exorbitant launch price. Fortunately, the company’s learned from those mistakes. (PS3, PS4, Sony)

It should be considering the sheer amount of tech that was packed into the ps3 and the price sony had to sell it for.

They were trying to make it 'hack-resistent' by developing a complicated, proprietary architecture and, for the most part, they were successful. But sometimes it's best to keep it simple, cheap, and familiar.

Well Cell was its greatest strong point and weakest link at the same time.

Blu-Ray production was extremely high priced as well. It had alot to do with the cost of the PS3. Now its cheap as a DVD player or soon to be.

I would certainly hope the PS4 would be more profitable than the PS3, considering the PS3 lost more money than what was profited from both PS1 and PS2 combined i.e. the Playstation business is now in the negative overall.

That said, the PS3 was used to push blu-ray and that cost them dearly.

@DeadlyFire:

Cell alone wasn't the weakest link, it was the overall architecture ill designed for gaming that made it weak. It is a great number cruncher at the time, if you wanted that.

As long as it isn't $599 US dollars then I agree.

There are some conflicting aspects to the PS4's pricing, we've heard Sony wont sell the PS4 at a loss like with the PS3, but we've heard the console will be priced to entice gamer's.

To me, $300-$400 really does the trick for a launch, anything higher than that is risky and expensive, so hopefully they are willing to take some sort of loss if it means a better launch.

I hope so, Sony lost money for quite a few years. I'll gladly buy a PS4, so long as it isn't that good ol' $599 lol

I didn't complain about price when I spent $600+ on my smartphone. I don't mind spending up to $800 for PS4.

this issue raise an important question, Why does console always have to sell at a loss?

Consoles offer more advanced technology than tablets and smartphones and yet we see people go crazy if consoles sell at more than $400, while they don't mind spending $800 on a tablet they're gonna replace in a year!!

I'd have to say that video games are still somewhat stuck in that "its only a toy" box. Even if they are more mainstream today than they were in the past people still think of them that way.

Come on Sony give Nintendo some serious competition and price your console at 350€ if possible.

Sony lost 2.3 billion in it's first year with the PS3 and didn't turn a profit for 4 years on the console. of course it's going to be more profitable. they aren't going to shoot themselves in the foot again!
Also, the BD tech is a LOT cheaper now.
Isn't this a no brainer? Seriously, did anyone need an article to learn this? LOL

I love that someone disagrees with facts!
1. Did the PS3 cost Sony $2.3 billion in it's first year? Yes. In fact it took around $4.3 billion in losses by the end of the 2009 fiscal year. (as reported by Sony in their annual reports.)

2. Did it take 4 years for the PS3 hardware to become profitable? Yes!
As reported in 2010 when Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said:
"This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3.
We aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to."

3. Was the BD tech massively expensive when the PS3 launched as opposed to today? Yes. We all know that. it was the main contributing factor the the PS3's high launch price.

4.Did anyone expect the PS4 to be as expensive to produce and cost Sony as much in losses as the PS3? I have to assume the answer is a resounding "NO!" LOL

It's not a slam against the PS3 or anything. it just is what it is. (logic)
