John Carpenter would love to make a Dead Space film

John Carpenter, the man behind horror classics Halloween, The Thing and The Fog, has said EA's Dead Space franchise is ready made for a movie adaptation and he'd love to make it.

"You know it's great," Carpenter told Game Informer in relation to the Dead Space franchise. "The first game was more - I guess it was like Alien - but not quite. It was a little different than that.

"I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something's on board. It's just great stuff.

"I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I'll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made." (Culture, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, Dead Space 3, Industry)

I wouldnt, hes made nothing in decades worth watching, in the 80s he made some brilliant films

He hasn't been doing much directing lately anyways, choosing to be more behind the scenes with producing or writing. He has only directed 3 movies since the year 2000. He's an amazing director who could easily capture the sense of isolation and dread that he managed with movies like the Thing. That exact feeling would be perfect for a movie like Dead Space.

I would see it in a heartbeat, but to each his/her own I guess.

Ok, my mistake:

And I'd love to watch a John-Carpenter-from-the-80s helmed Dead Space movie.

The Ward is a pretty good movie. It only lacked the creepy music and audio from his 80s movies. I believe that was his most recent movie he directed.

Not quite true; I watched The Ward the other day and it was actually pretty good.

Watch that on your own with a good pair of surround headphones (like I did) and enjoy.

EA should worry about fixing the game they butchered before making a movie.
Saryk  +   811d ago
EA wouldnt make the movie. Two different medias, I doubt EA would have anything to say in the matter.

no the movie would have to be licensed by EA since they own the Dead Space property and have it trade marked. So anything with Dead Space in the title that's related to the game needs EA's approval before going forward.

I didn't mean they would actually make the movie.

As much as I have enjoyed Carpenter's films, I don't think a movie version of Dead Space could work. You can't properly condense the brutal feelings of hopelessness, tension, and desperation from that first game into a 90 minute - 2 hour movie.
I'd rather have no live action Dead Space film than wind up cringing every couple years when the commercials for the abominable sequels continue to roll out, a la Resident Evil.

If he can pull it off with simple pratical effects and good narrative, atmophere and soundtrack it just might be worth watching.
