Nintendo's struggle to find a place for it's fledgling console

Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and the latest Madden all have two things in common. The first being that they will all be in millions of homes by the end of the year, each comfortably shifting enough copies to make the grinning money men of both Activision and EA tilt back in their chair, smoke a cigar and have a small toast to congratulate a fantastic marketing campaign.

The second is that none of them are coming to Wii U.

Yeah if they wan't to get their casuals back (due to the high amount of consoles it sold Nintendo with their first Wii), they need to offer more of the kinds of games that drew casuals in in the first place. But they also have to keep in mind the core too, since the casual market is kind of finicky and unreliable at times (they come and go at a whim, and casuals are not known for showing loyalty like core gamer's do).

PopRocks3591179d ago

Yeah, the casual push was not as strong with this console. Matter of fact, the general push really wasn't that strong. Should they start marketing this thing more effectively this summer as rumored, I can't help but wonder how it will play out.

Donnieboi1179d ago

Yeah, I think that if they remind casuals that all their wii games, wii motes, and weight scales still work on the Wii U--AND convince those same users that NEW games will come out for the Wii U that still use older tech such as the Wii-Mote/Wii-motion-plus and the old wii scale, then they would see it as a console that can also tend to their motion gaming needs. Without the added focus on "ease-of-play" mechanics, the casuals will continue to be clueless as to whether it can cater to their needs.

insomnium21179d ago

Wii's success was pure luck. There was no way to repeat that kind of a luck with ANY kind of console since casuals have moved on to the next fad.

Only Sony can repeat something like 100 million sold soon 3rd time in a row but that's only cause they have the games to do it. There's nothing else to it.

CouldHaveYelledUiiW1179d ago

True
it is a hard balancing act.

Even if they get the casual support-
Releasing WiiU Sport and WiiU Fit... lots of people will accuse them of going "Soft" not "Hardcore".

But it would be money.

So right, Adverts need to be more frequent and better executed.

What people dont seem to realize is that the games are not what drew casual crowd to the WII. It was the accessibility and simplicity of the control scheme. The only thing that you had to do was pick up the controller and in a few minutes you understood how to play most games. The Wii U controller on the other hand is not simple; its an Ipad with too many buttons. Most if not all casual gamers are not gonna be able to just pick up that controller and play. The defination of casual games is the ability to pick it up on the fly and quickly learn how to play. You cant do that on the Wii U. As for the hardcore market, most developers took note that hardcore games werent selling on nintendos system with a 90 million install base, so I highly doubt they are gonna risk making games on a system with a 3.8 million install base.

That's what i already said:

"Yeah, I think that if they remind casuals that all their wii games, wii motes, and weight scales still work on the Wii U--AND convince those same users that NEW games will come out for the Wii U that still use older tech such as the Wii-Mote/Wii-motion-plus and the old wii scale, then they would see it as a console that can also tend to their motion gaming needs. ...So why is your reply directed at me?

slapedurmomsace1179d ago

I don't think they're getting the casuals back, IMO no core console maker is. They've moved on to tablet and smart phone games. At best the casuals may come in after a few years and a price drop, by than it would be too late for the Wii U

Donnieboi1179d ago

U might have a good point there. I was just throwing out some idea's. Either way, there's no way Wii's sales numbers can be replicated again without getting the casuals to buy the Wii U for the same reasons they wanted the Wii.

Ours just gathers dust. Aside from Mario, nothing has really been that interesting and even Mario got old fast.

Theyellowflash301179d ago

You must be a shooting game fan. Because the Wii U has tons of great RPG and Action games coming.

Xenoblade 2, The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem,

majiebeast1179d ago (Edited 1179d ago )

So because he got sick of Mario he is a shooting game fan?

All the games you listed arent out yet and most of them dont have a release date. He never said he didnt like whats coming up for Nintendo. But he probably doesnt like the current released games. So in your eyes that makes him a shooting game fan? Maybe a little less jumping to conclusions next time.

Theyellowflash301179d ago

He said nothing interests him but Mario. And it's not like he said he is looking forward to other games on the Wii U.

The Wii U lacks the shooters PS3 and Xbox 360 fans love. So that's why I assumed that.

However, if you like RPG and action games, there should be plenty of games that interest him.

June 2013 for The WOnderful 101
August 2013 for Pikmin 3
Xenoblade 2 late 2013 in Japan, early 2014 america

Bayonetta and Shin Megami I have no clue.

refocusedman1179d ago

The truth is right NOW the Wii U has very little in terms of software options. As for the games you listed, I just find it very hard to label a game as great when it hasnt been released yet. Actually those games you mentioned seem to still be in development. Whether your a nintendo fan or not, you should at least try to be objective and somewhat unbiased in your thinking.

LOL_WUT1179d ago

Dude he chose Mario out of all the other games on the Wii U and yet you call him a shooting game fan?

We get it you like your console, but you don't have to be so defensive about it. ;)

MasterCornholio1179d ago

HEY!

I loath Mario but that doesn't make me an FPS lover in fact I hate the majority of FPS especially military FPs like call of duty.
Why is it so difficult for Nintendo fans to admit that Nintendo made some mistakes with the Wii U? It really isn't that difficult to do at all.

Last time I checked, Pikmin 3 is a strategy game.

I guess if you drink enough of the Nintendo Kool Aid you'll believe anything.

OwlEyes1179d ago

Call of Duty: Ghosts is almost certainly coming to Wii U.

Theyellowflash301179d ago

Activision never said Call of Duty Ghosts wasn't coming to Wii U.

Kingthrash3601179d ago

ditching E3 wasn't a good move in order to find a place in peoples livingrooms with new more powerful consoles coming.

Trago13371179d ago

They aren't ditching E3 >_>

brewin1179d ago

Its amazing to me how many people lack true reading and listening abilities. Nintendo NEVER said ANYWHERE they wont be at E3. They said they would APPROACH IT DIFFERENTLY this year. That means several smaller, more personal events so press can actually play and ENJOY the games.

I seriously cannot wait till all these haters and misinformed people are stuck picking their jaws off the floor once they see the games Nintendo has been working on. Take off your fucking fanboy goggles and do some reading kiddies!

Kingthrash3601179d ago

lol your funny guy.. if they aren't doing the usual conference that they do ...like when they showed zelda for gc and had fanboys crying and flocking for the games after the conference ...and now they arent haveing a conference just a showing mostly behind closed doors when they have a struggling less than a year old system that need all the push it can get right now is the definition of ditching. say and make all yhe excuses you can for the but this is the worst marketing choice ive seen since sony did it to the vita. im never a fan boy im a gamer all day every day lil homie I just call ot how I see it and tgis move is ditching and letting sony and MS have the spotlight...its just dumb...like your comment...fanboy

brewin1179d ago

Beeen a hardcore gamer since the early 80 there buddy. I own and love virtually every system ever released that mattered. Even the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. Its sad that you REALLY think Nintendo is abandoning e3 altogether. They are just doing it differently. What's wrong with that? The hoopla that surrounds these press conferences is becoming more and more lame and unnecessary. I for one am glad that Nintendo is recognizing this and changing the format. Its typical fanboy reactions to spas over shit like this, which is what ur doing. Have u seen what they have is store? No, u haven't. So stfu and wait til after e3 before you talk shit and spread false information. Fan kid.
