The Pessimistic Optimist: Could The Evil Within Be A Breath of Fresh Air for Horror Games?

J. Hugo writes "The Evil Within, for many horror gamers, looked like the type of game they wanted and/or needed, and Mikami being behind the project only made it all the sweeter. However, I’ve had some reservations. Don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty excited for the game. However, will The Evil Within really turn out to be that breath of fresh air for horror games that everyone thinks it will be?"

I must be the only one who is scared of gore. Brutal and violent deaths scare me, yes. I remember watching Martyrs. I was terrified the whole time because I was like "Oh my god, I'm going to se horrible things, I'm so scared". Same thing with Resi 4. Whenever I heard that guy with his chainsaw approaching I was thinking "Nooo, I don't want to lose my head, pleaaase". Anyway. Can't wait to see more of The Evil Within. If the game is as creepy as the live trailer was, then it's going to be an instant buy for me.

Classic Resident Evil always gave you an option of fight or flight when it came to any situation. There were situations where there were monsters in enclosed spaces however if you time the sidesteps just right you can dodge the mob or better yet make a zombie fall over into the others so you can run past which I usually did. Then there is expert use of the knife which many game guides would tell you to discard but can be very effective in getting past enemies with some well-timed slashes to the leg.

Another issue I have with the article is the perfect balance between horror and horror. I think Resident Evil II nailed in my opinion even though Mikami only had a supervisory role in it's creation. Of course there were over the top boss fights and explosions however they were never frequent enough to break the game's atmosphere.

And why.....WHY do people always think they have to add "I wasn't scared when I played X game" to sound like a badass, so what? You don't have to be terrified of the game or movie to appreciate the effort of the creators to induce fear. This was the most frequent response that supporters of Resident Evil's action transition which has Capcom regretting their decision to follow suit. It's should be one of the questions that should be answered only when asked in my opinion.

Sounds like nitpicking to me in those areas but the read gave some valid concerns.

I'll be surprised if this game isn't amazing considering who's directing it.

DarkBlood4011d ago

hopefully it becomes a series

I'm gonna need an army to support my flame shield but I thought everything about this game's trailer was cheesy as hell.

I'll reserve judgement till I see some gameplay though.

It really was cheesy as hell to be honest but I wouldn't pay to much attention to a live trailer wait for some gameplay before you make your mind up.

Kyosuke_Sanada4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

Well it was meant to be cheesy so you are not wrong lol. All Shinji Mikami games have campy live action trailers to support it because he loved grindhouse trailers for movies. Watch the Vanquish and Resident Evil classic intros and you will get what I mean.....

more like a Pessimistic pessimist. This is Shinji Mikami!!. And this is his "Recent" horror game. The last horror game he made was way back in 2005 RE4. So I doubt this will be terrible. He never made a "Bad" horror game even once. This will be a breathe of fresh air because:
1. we are suffocated by shooters!!.
2. Its a classic survival horror modified with modern gaming mechanics (Not action packed, COD style)
3.Bethesda is giving freedom for tango gameworks
4. Lastly, Core elements in horror games doesn't need to be changed, The atmosphere, sound, the enemies and fight or flee mechanics. I was dreaming of a horror game like Siren blood curse where you will "Sneak" past enemies and its a very scary and intense feeling but with a big production value like resident evil 4!!. And this is it!!

Original FEAR is a goddamn masterpiece

Was playing Alien: Isolation again a few weeks ago, still holds up and the AI is incredible.

F.E.A.R. was another amazing game, shame the series went downhill with 2 and then fell off entirely with F3AR.

Couldn’t get into Fatal Frame, bought the remaster on PS5 and just…couldn’t.

DeathTouch353d ago

Fatal Frame 2 is an underrated masterpiece.
