Is Virtual Reality The Next Big Thing?

CheatCC says: "Does anyone else think it's weird that the Internet has recently become crammed with conversions about Virtual Reality gaming? I mean, technology has obviously come a long way since the Virtual Boy was released in 1995, but there's something terribly familiar about the current generation of VR products, so I'm still a little surprised by all of the enthusiasm." I think Virtual Reality is the holy grail of gaming. Whether or not it is the next big thing remains to be seen, not because of whether or not the idea is good, but because of how well the tech is implemented.

VR is the only way I can think of that increases immersion to the kind of level we gamers always imagine the future to behold.

I remember this question when it was asked in the early 1990's, granted the tech wasn't where it's at now, but I don't think the majority of people want goggles or glasses as an all the time thing.

I wouldn't mind trying it now and again, but I don't want to be encumbered every time I game.

No. Actual new games and not a shooter-fest. Is the next big thing. It's called gaming.

I don't think it'll be the next BIG thing. But it will be a thing that some people want. Just like the wii and casual games, the people concentrating on this tech will find their niche. I would like to see what they come up with and who knows what kind of genre this will spawn.

the oculus rift IS next gen gaming. Never before has VR been so convincing yet affordable as the OcRift will be. If anyone does ANY research, they'll know what i'm talking about. Just youtube Oculus Rift.

Comparing this to VirtualBoy is ludicrous. VirtualBoy wasn't even virtual reality. It was just a console that you had to look through goggles to see.

Occulus combined with Omni looks great. To me, there are only 2 questions:

1) Can they be combined, and affordable enough to be mainstream?

2) Will they get enough, and a variety of software support (we don't want to play shooters all the time)?
