Conference Call-Off: Nintendo's Ambition and Gamers' Suspicion

Default Prime's Alex Carlson contemplates what the lack of a major press conference by Nintendo at E3 2013 could mean for the company, the community and the industry, while also detailing a huge shift in the atmosphere of the biggest gaming showcase of the year. (3DS, E3, Next-Gen, Nintendo, Wii U)

Ninty is just too damn bold. though i cant fully understand why they would make this move, the fact that they've made it says a lot about how bold of a company ninty really is. i just came from a diferent page that showcased a lot (not all) but a lot of ninty's biggest hitters. mario kart wii-34 million, (really?? mkwii-34 mil)and it probably cost them...(what!! like a 3rd of what it cost sony to make GRAND TURISMO) exactly!! if there's one thing ninty makes, its money. so i say lets wait and see cuz if ninty's move backfires then everyone can say they told them so, but WHAT IF IT DOESNT BACKFIRE??

It won`t backfire. Nintendo knows what they`re doing, kids on this site do not.

Nope like all companys Nintendo are capable of making mistakes. Heck even Iwata admitted this recently and he would know more about his buisness practices than you do.

Dont believe me? Heres evidence.

http://www.computerandvideo...

""Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to Wii. We feel deeply responsible for not having tried hard enough to have consumers understand the product.""

Consumers misunderstanding the Wii U? Marketing mistakes by Nintendo.

""Wii U might still have no such captivating game title as Wii Sports for Wii, with which people immediately comprehended its product value, but it surely has a lot of factors appreciated by users," he said. "We would like to take time to work thoroughly for its penetration, by making various efforts to have many people understand its product value as well as enriching the software lineup.""

Poor first party support at launch, another Nintendo mistake.

""Wii U has lost momentum due to the release pace of first-party titles which has not lived up to consumers' expectations. Starting with Pikmin 3 scheduled for release in the upcoming July, however, we will intensively launch our key titles to give sales momentum to the platform.""

Again Nintendo admitting that they should have had more first party games at launch.

All companys have made mistakes with their systems in the past. Microsoft made the mistake by creating Kinect and abandoning the core. Sony made the mistake by incorporating alien technology into the PS3. Nintendo made a mistake with the Wii U with terrible marketing and poor first party support at launch for the system.

There are plenty of ways that this could backfire. Taking an elitist, "we're different" approach is certainly not the path of least resistance. We're not talking about Apple, here.

E3s for the last couple of years have always been underwhelming for me, with the big three often doing damage control afterwords,so I do see the logic in switching to several smaller Nintendo Direct like conferences. Those personal, smaller conferences like the Nintendo Directs and Sony's PS4 announcement have all been satisfying and portrayed their messages well. However, the biggest thing about e3 is the media attention and fanfare. People get really excited about the events year after year. Even if they often don't live up to expectations, it draws people's attention. If Nintendo uses this opportunity to draw the attention of normal consumers, it could work out though. We are just gonna have to wait and see.
