Consoles that won’t die: The Atari Jaguar

Out of This World (known as Another World outside of North America) is a true gaming classic, hitting systems as diverse as the Super Nintendo and iOS since its 1991 arrival on the Commodore Amiga. Creator Eric Chahi has now given his blessing to one more adaptation of the game on an unlikely console. (Another World/Out of This World, Culture, Retro)

People were crazy to program for this thing to begin with.

No surprise, then, that the best Jaguar games were made by crazy people. (Exhibits A, B, and C, Jeff Minter.)

ahh the jag
such an overly hyped and under appreciated platform. While mine is still in good working order, sadly the cd drive no longer reads discs.

Damn thing too, I have some games I would love to play again on CD but eh...its more of a collectors item now than system I play on a regular basis.

Now my saturn and neogeo cd....yeah i play those things constantly.

I had an Atari 2600 growing up, but I don't remember the Jaguar.

Ah...the true death knell for Atari. The little quasi-64-bit system that could.

I owed the system and had 3 games for it, I had that cheesy space game that came with the system, Dragon the bruce Lee story, and Aliens vs Predator. Aliens vs Predator was the best Aliens game I've played thus far to date. Granted, the Alien and Predator missions weren't great, but the Human mission was out of this world. The Epic play through of going through the hive to find the last card key and having to find the queens lair was wonderful!!!! Finding the card keys to progress was a joyful pain in the ass!

Venturing on the Predator ship, Oh! you hear them whisper but they're cloaked that damn game was 69.99 when it came out too, and that was 95 I think

could you imagine if...
that game was recoded for modern systems? I think it would be better than colonial marines but the biggest problem i had with the jag original was frame rate. It was choppy as hell but the graphics were stunning for the time.

If the jag ever does get the virtual console treatment, let this game be among the ones re-released (but improve the frame rate at least). That game and tempest 2000 are my favorites.

not many know this but the nuon was a spirtual successor to the jaguar. Tempest 3000 and iron soldier 3 were two notable games that had been in development for the jag before it was canned. VM Labs took the jag tech, beefed it up and built it into several dvd players on the market at the time.

I have the Toshiba SD2300 and I know there are a few others as well.

I'm sure I'm going to eat crow for this statement, but when you look at it from a technological standpoint the Jaguar blew the 3D doors off of the Playstation, Saturn, and N64. Unfortunately that god awful controller and initial hardware impressions killed it.

I'm not saying the Jaguar doesn't deserve the criticism, but it did have the odds going for it if you're betting on 3D. I'm guessing it was the middle ground nature and cheaper CD format of the Playstation that dominated the US market.
