Tweaktown: GeForce 9800 GX2 Overclocked & Tested

NVIDIA's GeForce 9800 GX2 still isn't perfect though but with a good driver it could really begin to shine in the weeks to come but you get an early look with early drivers here today of what is to come. In Tweaktown's opinion, NVIDIA could have taken a different approach to the GeForce 9 series - instead of re-releasing the 8800GTS 512MB and introducing the 8800GT, these cards should have either not been released or released under the GeForce 9 series.

The problem is that the 8800GT bought with it such exceptional value that NVIDIA were too high up on the podium. A new naming scheme should mean big things. Unfortunately at the moment it doesn't look like its being delivered.

You guys really should not have bought those cards... anyone could've seen it was much better to wait a couple months until the next series. SLI is pretty pointless unless you have tons of money to burn regardless though. I'm gonna get a 9800GTX when they finally come out.

You have to do your research before going SLI.
Some SLI combos are good, others not so good.
An example of a good SLI setup would be two 9600GTs.

Never been a fan of SLI, I have always been of the view that the only people that should ever SLI are people that have just bought the fastest card in existance. So the only way to get better is to buy a second card. I really cannot understand these people that buy 2 x 8600gt to try and get the same performance as 1 x 8800gt. You don't save that much money (if any) and you get a whole host of problems.

Sorry you guys had to find out the hard way, but you know the old saying "once bitten twice shy", for anyone else avoid GX2 cards like the plague and wait it out.

So whats the best bang for your buck card to buy right now?

Charmers3718d ago

At the moment it is a toss up between a 8800gt or a 9600gt. The 8800gt 512mb model does beat the 9600gt and if you can find it at a decent price then that is the card to go for. I can't comment on a eqivulent ATI card because I don't really pay that much attention to them.

The 8800 GTS 512 is a fantastic card. It is very simple to safely overclock and performs better than an 8800 GTX in a lot of cases (until you get to really high resolutions). It is a little more expensive than the 8800 GT but I think it is worth it for the added performance.
