PS4′s Share button was Sony Santa Monica’s idea

DualShock 4’s Share button was pitched to SCE bosses by Sony Santa Monica creative director Nathan Gary, Shuhei Yoshida has revealed.

As part of a far reaching interview on PS4’s creation – in which he also explained why Knack was revealed first at PlayStation Meeting – Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios recalled that the new pad’s headline social feature was pitched after months of discussion about PS4′s social features and implemented into the new DualShock design almost immediately.

“After the core hardware, the CPU and GPU, had been decided the project shifted to designing and discussing what should be the user experience of people who be playing games on PS4,” Yoshida told us. “So we formed the cross-functional groups of people from SCEI hardware group and Worldwide Studios and Sony network services teams to meet every month, almost. And Mark [Cerny] was heavily involved and leading some discussions. And the idea of sharing and seamless integration with social networks, that was heavily discussed.” (PS4, Tag Invalid)

Thank you Santa Monica... That is pretty much the most exciting feature revealed about the PS4 for me personally.

Well then I guess a great developer makes great ideas. The SHARE button in my opinion is a smart idea. It would help gamers create a Youtube career and a smart idea for developers since other gamers can check out games before they buy so they can have an overall idea of what to buy.

I will be gladly being using this buton so I can finally start my Youtube channel. I think that this and the new DS4 features are the game changer. CANNOT WAIT TILL LAUNCH

Although Sony Santa Monica did pitch the idea, I'd say it was more gamers in general, if you look at forums and PS Blog and stuff, Playstation fans have been asking for this for a while now.

Great to see they're listening and bringing it in.
DragonKnight  +   894d ago
"It would help gamers create a Youtube career."

What I'm interested in is how the copyright claims would work now. I mean, with the share button and a direct Youtube link, it would be pretty counterproductive for any of the publishers to make copyright claims on game videos now with the Share button being so critical.
NeoTribe  +   894d ago
Nobodys making a youtube career with the share button lol. Plus theres enough garbage on youtube as it is, we dont need anymore.
RedSoakedSponge  +   894d ago
have they confirmed its connected with youtube? because when they revealed the share button, they didnt use youtube but some other video streaming service.

oh god no, noone wants more shitty youtubers ranting about crap while showing COD gameplay.
Septic  +   895d ago
Yup, by far the most brilliant feature of the ps4 and one that has been on my wishlist for quite some time.

I never thought anyone would go so far as incorporating it into the controller though. That goes to show how seriously Sony is taking this. It is also a very clever move.

I'm just hoping that it records the voices of other players too. Then I can probably sell my HD PVR (which will no doubt go down I'm value as a result of the feature :( )
Snookies12  +   895d ago
That would be awesome if it recorded microphone audio when a headset is on, and it's saved to a separate track. That way you could include it or get rid of it.
nosferatuzodd  +   894d ago
I guarantee you that come June Microsoft is going to have and called it a different name peek maybe just watch
Septic  +   894d ago

Well, you never know, they could have been working on a similar feature before Sony. It's similar to how you could remotely turn on your console with your wireless controller this gen; who came up with that feature first? Difficult to say really.

But if MS dont have this feature, I'll be telling a lot of my close mates to buy the PS4 over the Xbox. Simply put, this feature is that important to us. It's why I spent a lot of money on a hd pvr.
BitbyDeath  +   895d ago
Brilliant thinking by Santa Monica. Hoping we get more options from it like the ability to save straight to your HDD (maybe it already does?)and sending to friends or even creating GIFs.
Bathyj  +   894d ago
One of the first things I thought of when I heard this is making instant gifs. If its not already in I'm sure they will add it.

I then want gif or short video clip support for animated wallpapers and theme creation, built straight into the PS4. People would spend hours customizing the look of the interface to make it their own.
For me it was watching people play.

Can someone explain to me what the button actually does?
Like, how do you use it and what's all the features?
Septic  +   895d ago
You should watch the PS4 reveal if you have time. It goes into some detail as to how the feature works.

The share feature allows you to record any gameplay from any game. It's my understanding that the PS4 will always be recording the last 3 minutes of gameplay. So imagine if you pulled off an amazing shot, or some crazy one off event happened in a sandbox (or whatever you want to share really), this way, you can be sure that your moment I'd captured by the PS4.

Also, the feature takes sharing to another level. Like OnLive, you can actually watch your mates play. It's supposed to be very intuitive. You go to your friends list, check out your mate and watch him play any game.

Even better, the game also allows you to take control of someone else's game. So if you're stuck in a particular level for instance, not only can your mate give you advice as he watched your gameplay, he can assume control if you're struggling. What this means for competitive multiplayer games is that, if, for instance you're playing Mortal Kombat and someone is kicking your backside, if you're one of the few humans blessed with my presence on your friends list, you can let me assume direct control (Mass Effect reference intended) and obliterate the opponent. J/k lol but you get the idea.

To be honest you should go into YouTube and search for a video snippet about the feature. I would get it for you but my phone is about to run out of battery.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.
Septic  +   894d ago

Ha yes I did. I mostly always post from my phone. My battery doesn't last long though as you can imagine. And here's proof lol:

Stupid HTC ONE X. Never going with HTC again!

Agree with ijust2good.

For me this button is pointless. People are going to use it and abuse it at the beginning. It's just going to fill the crap out of YouTube with stupid videos... lot of spam... then after some time most people are going to get fed up with it, and stop using it.

If i get a PS4, it wont be because of the Share button.

Why are people disagreeing with you? All u said was "its my PERSONAL favorite feature." But anyway, yes.. I think its the most exciting built in feature along side the new vita functionality.. Remote play will be mirrored this time with no lag or separate apps running.. GREATNESS!!!

Oh really? The 360 can capture video of gameplay? I've had two 360's in the past, never knew...

Wii U has this feature too, only with pictures.

Hopefully in a future update it has video too.
Snookies12  +   894d ago
The Vita and to a lesser extent the 3DS can take pictures as well in games. Video however is an entirely different matter.
Blackdeath_663  +   894d ago
well i can sort of relate, what i found exciting is not so much the share button itself but the automatic video compression and decompression going on in the background and the dedicated chip for that. also the streaming possibilities as a result of that. the share button is just a neat feature which brings all these features together. personally my favourite feature is being able to switch off my ps4 at any time then continue exactly from where i left off next time i turn it on thanks to the low power state and the amount of ram

I'm honestly not really interested in it for "Let's Play" videos. However, being able to capture those (once in a lifetime) moments that can happen in games is very exciting for me. I've had so many amazing stories to tell my gaming friends in the past, but didn't have any recording device. Now I don't have to worry about it. Something crazy happens in a game, all I have to do is hit the button and it's saved. No more stories, now I can just show them.

Yeah i think games like Journey and Unfinished swan wouldve been great shared experiences. So it isnt surprising this idea came from someone heavily involved with those 2 games. Kudo's to him though for coming up with it, its easily 1 of the best looking features of the PS4 so far.

So glad Sony has stopped using the SCEJ ivory tower approach of console development and has embraced a global approach.

Mark Cerny as PS4 lead is just pure genius he knows about all aspects of game development.

LOL we all know it was Nintendo's idea. Share button is just the Wii U gamepad Home button with a different name. Same functionality that the Wii U does with its Home button on miiverse was shown with the share button. I already expect Disagrees on this comment because people on N4G are delusional of the facts as always when it comes to Sony products.
majiebeast  +   895d ago
Fryface.jpg not sure if trolling or just incredibly stupid.

"The HOME Button on your Wii U GamePad gives you immediate access to game manuals, Miiverse, and Internet Browser at any time—without having to exit your game"

Thats from Nintendo's own site so unless Nintendo is wrong about their own product you sir are wrong. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

How is posting screenshots, videos and streaming videos instantly the same as miiverse, if anything miiverse is better compared to home but more convenient.

Please explain where i was wrong. It would be entertaining to see you try and fail because ultimately you know im right. Share button is used to pop up a menu to share in game content. Wii U gamepad Home button already does that....please state where im trolling or im wrong? Bet you cant....
Dgander  +   895d ago
Thanks for proving me right. LOL I already explained its used to post content to miiverse so thanks for clearing that up for me.

@MariaHelFutura Everything except take over my friend's Wii U. You telling me i cant share screenshots and in game content to miiverse with the HOME button? Funny cause you seem like the delusional one here.

Edit- You seem to be ignoring the video part.

To me the biggest thing about the Share Button is the fact it grants access to a persons game play... this is a game changer to some extent.

Imagine watching someone doing a perfect run of MGSV and someone is talkin crap how they could do better, host gives viewer access to the game, cocky viewer dies, everyone points and laughs, host regains control of game(?) then greatness continues.

Sounds like it's going to be a diverse bragging tool, an interactive walkthrough via bystanders helping with hints or giving control to someone who's beaten the game you're having difficulty with and probably more that I am missing.
turnerdc  +   894d ago
Actually Dgander, it was OnLive's idea :).

I have a question that just occurred to me. How will Sony handle Sharing while playing rated M games (or the equivalent)? For instance, uploading a God of War sex mini-game, complete with nudity, would probably violate Facebook's terms of service, and at least need to be in the Mature section of YouTube, if it was allowed at all.

How will this be handled? Will Sharing be prevented for certain games, or certain scenes, and if so, who decides which ones? Where do you draw the line?

I'll be interested to see what Sony comes up with.
rainslacker  +   894d ago
Console to console it'll probably be the parental controls which prevent access in such a manner.

I'd imagine what content can be shared would be up to the developers, as they are likely to not want spoilers to be posted. I know quantic dreams is pretty hard line about this, which is why they copy protect their save files.

Youtube already allows mature content(you need to sign in), but sexual content would likely not be sharable, and rightfully so IMO. Not sure about facebook, but likely will be the same thing. No doubt Sony is already making deals with them on this kind of stuff.
turnerdc  +   894d ago
OnLive doesn't block mature content from being recorded and those clips are usually the ones with the highest views. Haha, people have recorded the Playboy centerfolds in Mafia II, sex scenes in Witcher 1 and 2, stripper scene in Duke Nukem Forever, etc, it can be pretty hilarious.

I think the ideas great, but It's going to be a bit odd for people playing PS1.2 and 3 games remembering that Options and Share are Start and Select, but I've got a feeling most people will just keep their PS3 anyway, I've got 40+ disc-based games and a terrible net connect so I, for once, am keeping my Launch day PS3. shadow2797, I've got a feeling they'll be dedicated site that are age restricted, your facebook, twitter etc would link you maybe?

The PS4 will inherently record and save "the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action," which you can then edit and share using the console's sharing function

KrisButtar  +   895d ago
Please correct me if I'm wrong but why does everyone think when you use the share button the video is going to youtube? I haven't seen or read that anywhere unless I missed it. It could also be a playstation site(PS version of youtube?) that the videos get posted or maybe just FB. Unless like I said I am wrong, I just don't remember youtube being mentioned, but more like assumed. Also someone said it only records the last 3 mins? so you couldn't post boss battles that took longer then?

All in all it likely will be a fun feature
Sevir  +   895d ago
From what i saw and read, the partnership is with ustream
And Facebook. From Upstream you can of course link it to Youtube.
I know for a fact that GG, uploaded Shadow Fall gameplay and reveal trailer to the KZ Facebook page directly from the PS4.

Stefanrules7  +   894d ago
Well hopefully it can be used to record properly, but i still have a feeling its guna be underwhelming like the call of duty clip thing that lets you upload 15 second clips

Also the prototype dev kits may have features like this but the commercial console wont. It happened with the vitas video output which was not available on the commercial device but was with the dev kits.
