Gearbox Software acquires Homeworld IP

Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software's Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic's brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition. (Dev, Industry, PC)

I do not know how to feel about this news. I never expected Gearbox to even make a bid on it wouldve rather seen a RTS dev pick it up.

Randy used SEGA's Aliens dev budget to buy this, the puzzle is coming together people J/K.

@Donnie

They only did 2 of the expansions opposing force and blueshift and a few ports.

My favorite RTS franchise of all time, is bought by the creators of Borderlands, Brothers in Arms, Half Life [edit: only did the expansions], Borderlands 2?

But then again they also made Duke Nukem Forever.

I don't know what to think...

EDIT: @Majibeast: Yeah, they only did the Half Life expansions, not even the real game. Oh boy, this is a strange marriage.

Im just affraid they are gonna turn it into a fps because according to industry experts, FPS is the best cashcow and gearbopx has never made a RTS. Right now i can hardly think of a worse outcome.

Incoming Homeworld:Colonial Marines with the superior wiiU version, before it gets canned

Other 2 bids were apparently from Paradox interactive(Magicka and war of the roses) and stardock(Sins of a solar empire)

It will be an FPS with bad memes.

Eh, didn't Gearbox only work on the console version of Half Life? I mean they worked on it, but that hardly means they really did much past porting.

Also GB did not make DNK, 3D realms and Triptych Games did for the most part. Similar to how Captain Scarlett and Hammerlock DLC were done by them too. Quite similar to how Gearbox "made" Aliens, though they just out sourced it.

In either case, I think this is awful news. Gearbox might have done some good games, but their recent track record is pretty poor.

Outsourced BL 2 DLC.
Charged for the level cap increase.
Constantly contradicting what they say in interviews / statements.
Taking forever to patch issues.
Selling another Vault Chest ($100) without any worthwhile items.
Shift being nothing more than a gold key source.
Everything with Aliens seems to be problematic.
etc

@Donnie

Gearbox also ported 'Half-Life' (the full game too) on the PS2, even had a co-op mode in it.

I REALLY don't know how to react to this. Good for Gearbox, I guess??

If this was the Gearbox that had just released Borderlands 1 game, then yes I would have been ecstatic.
Borderlands 2, Alien CM and Duke Nuke'Em have left a bitter, bitter taste and I cant shake the feeling that I should write off HW now.

Oh boy. Here we go again!

I'm still of the mindset that Gearbox is a studio that got lucky with a single game (Borderlands. And I guess by extension Borderlands 2: It's Just More Borderlands), but really only produces mediocre to shit games.

Man people love to complain! Just think about it. They bid for the license so they are of obviously excited about it. They have some money to give it a good run unlike a few of the other studios that were bidding on it. They already have good graphic artists that use that cartoonish look ala Borderlands. Plus they will hire and experienced RTS team and most likely get a few of the original guys to be consultants on the project.

Bottom line...we will get another Homeworld game. For those of us who have been waiting 10 years for this news, you should be happy. All studios make mistakes and I think this is one franchise they will truly handle with kids gloves and do the right things.

Stop hating and rejoice for a while all...I know I am.

Best they could do is re-release Homeworld 1, Cata & 2 for digital release.

There's no way to play these games other than purchasing the physical discs which is rather amusing.

There's a space on GOG just waiting for Homeworld.

But yes...would've prefered Sega to have had it...

Bleh, too bad Sega/Relic couldn't have gotten it, now it'll be an FPS
Nodoze  +   1021d ago
They fked up Aliens and now they get Homeworld!? I am NOT happy about this at all. Gearbox knows FK all about making RTS games.
