Nintendo's Wii U Advertising Reaches For The Panic Button

These are so terrible I'd tell you not to watch them, but screw it, if I had to, you have to as well.

If time travel is invented anytime soon, giving us the chance to atone for past mistakes, I like to think the first person in line will be the man who signed off on the name "Wii U" instead of "Wii 2" or "New Nintendo Console That's Not The Wii OK Guys". (Wii U)

iGAM3R-VIII  +   860d ago
I remember that they also compared the Wii U to the Wii. That wasn't smart because why would you trash your OWN console. They should have compared it to the 360, PS3, or other handhelds and stuff.
I want so badly to ask that kid what he thinks of dark souls 2.

How can a child say it's the best system ever?? He has only been born for a year..

everybody speaks for his own tastes. People are loving 360 or ps3 just for COD or FIFA every year it's the only game they play.

I respect those who say Wii U is the best console ever even if i dont agree. As long as every gamer finds what he needs that's the most important

The problem with these advertisements is that we all know they're BS. When Nintendo showed off a family playing a Wii, or a "block party" centered around a Wii, or a non-gaming relative walking into the room enjoying the Wii, we all knew it was true because we were experiencing it in our private lives. We all knew that the Wii was sold out everywhere. Our co-workers were talking about the Wii.

With the WiiU, there's barely a fraction of that hype.

What do you mean by BS exactly? All the ads do is show families having fun and expressing excitement over the console. I really don't see what is "BS" about that considering that people have been going nuts practically shouting at Nintendo to market the Wii U more effectively. Not to say that this is all that effective in my opinion, but I can't even remotely imagine how this is as bad as Kotaku, of all sources, is saying it is or why people seem to agree with it.

@ PopRocks

When I saw Wii commercials, I thought in my head "yeah, it really is like that". I worked at Gamestop for a few months leading up to the Wii's launch up through New Super Mario Bros in 2009. I saw, firsthand, the rabid excitement of gamers, families, and non-gamers alike.

Granted, I don't get to see that first-hand anymore (since I no longer work at GS, thank goodness), but the same excitement is not there. If it was there, why are WiiU's sales in the pits? Wii was sold out for nearly 3 years straight. Even when Nintendo increased production in early 2007, it was still sold out. And it was sold out again when NSMB Wii launched.

There isn't any of that excitement of fervor for the WiiU. It's as if people...oh, I don't know...don't care? I mean, I hate to be harsh, but the general public doesn't really seem to care about the WiiU. There are flashier toys to occupy their attention.

so, are you guys the ones that watch a beer commercial and actually believe that if you drink a budweiser you're suddenly cooler, more popular, and extremely hot chicks really dig you? or that there is an actual talking gecko that really wants you to get car insurance?

shut up with your, "but but but that advertising doesnt reflect reality!" when does advertising ever reflect reality?
sinncross  +   860d ago
The fact that the ad clearly states that the families were compensated breaks a lot of the illusion around the 'reality' of the ad. That said, I think the kid is mostly legit... he is young, I doubt he even knows what Dark Souls is (for example).

not entirely convincing ads though... Nintendo can, and need to, do better.

"That wasn't smart because why would you trash your OWN console"

FFS that's not trashing, it's simply putting out the differences between Wii and WiiU. Everyone complains that people didn't, still don't, know the difference between the two. So when Nintendo puts out a factual chart of what is better compared to the old, they are bashing it? A lot of companies do it with their products.

Where does this delusional thought come from? Someone made an issue out of it and people are just hopping the bashwagon.

Comparing it to the 360 and PS3 would just shine light on those consoles too. Free advertisement on their part. Why would they do that? It's irrelevant whether it's better than the 360 or PS3. They need to convince wii ownsers why they should "upgrade" from Wii to WiiU. Nintendo is trying to sell their product, that's their focus. Not Sony or Microsoft. Because to the average end user it doesn't matter.

Hardly seen any promotion material for the Wii U outside of gaming sites. Seemed like I couldn't escape Nintendo ramming the Wii down my throat at the time.

That's not advertising with a Panic Button....
Erimgard  +   860d ago
Those...weren't that bad? I just feel like they didn't do enough to make the distinction that this is a brand new console, not an "upgrade" to your Wii.
LOL_WUT  +   859d ago
The ads were horrible and they reeked of desperation. Lets not try and sugarcoat it ok guys? ;)
PopRocks359  +   859d ago
perfectCarbonara  +   860d ago
Haha wow Nintendo is really desperate to be doing ads like this. I especially love how in the third ad the daughter tries to high five her mom and the mom just disses her. Great editing Nintendo.

And it's so poorly acted.

Spookshow  +   859d ago
Not much need to act, the Wii U is actually tons of fun. This is coming from a gamer that loves Dark Souls (only mentioning DS because apparently a lot of the people here think it's such a benchmark among gamers), and that could prolly kick your rear on most games too.

Respect the big N you n00bs!
majiebeast  +   860d ago
This is Marcus PSP level panic here. Atleast it made for another funny GIF http://i.imgur.com/5knHq7L....

The funny thing is Nintendo still hasnt been able to convince people the wiiU is actually a new console and these 3 commercials, also couldnt explain that. I think its time for Reggie to leave, cause as former marketing guy he really messed up the marketing for the WiiU in the US. The whole wiiU branding was a giant mistake.
#6 (Edited 860d ago ) | Agree(7) | Disagree(3) | Report | Reply
dedicatedtogamers  +   859d ago
That branding came from the big-wigs back home in Japan. Reggie can't really do much in that regard. He also can't do much when Nintendo's philosophy with the WiiU pretty much ignored all of the "expanded audience", disruption theory, and blue-ocean marketing that Reggie had been pushing since the Wii first launched.
AsheXII  +   860d ago
Seems like Kotaku is the only one pushing the panic button here.
GraveLord  +   859d ago
Kotaku is right on this one. These ads are pathetic.
_QQ_  +   860d ago
I don't care if they market it to casual gamers, as long as they bring them the money to make amazing games for us to play.
wantonGamer  +   859d ago
If the casuals bring in loads of cash, why again would they make amazing games for you/us to play ? Since the casual will be where it's at.
_QQ_  +   859d ago
That didn't stop them last gen from making amazing games, and the wii pretty much invented the casual audience. They Have i think two teams that make wiifitu and house party style games, because they know that is all they need, plus mario kart is a huge casual audience seller.
Qrphe  +   859d ago
It stopped them from releasing games like F-Zero, StarFox and new franchises such as Eternal Darkness and Gheist. Instead they did iterations of Mario and party titles.
KontryBoy706  +   860d ago
The Wii had no problem selling. It sold like the cure for cancer. You couldn't find one to buy because they were constantly sold out everywhere. Nintendo even had kiosks in malls to show off the Wii. Advertising was everywhere. As far as the Wii U goes, people are having a hard time even knowing it's a new console lol! I asked one of my friends if he knew what the Wii U was he said... that's that new handheld for the Wii? LOL

Oh my god, you mean nintendo isn't advertising with dubstep but advertising with a focus on families?!? You mean nintendo is doing in store ads now that explain what a system is and how fun it is?! Clearly they are out of control they've never done an in store ad like this before. /s
Nevers0ft  +   859d ago
This is what irks me. Damned if they don't advertise and damned if they do. Even though the adverts (to us) appear to be served with a side order of cheese, no doubt Nintendo have a specific demographic in mind - and it's not us cool kids*

*I am neither cool, nor a kid.

This makes me ashamed I bought a WiiU.
Nevers0ft  +   859d ago
I'm ashamed you bought a Wii U as well, why not give it to somebody less shallow?
_QQ_  +   859d ago
Because you are too cool for family entertainment.
jcnba28  +   859d ago
You don't even have one.
skyrimer  +   859d ago
They are having the same problem with the Vita, next time call them Wii2 and PSP 2, sequential console names are boring but people understand what they are getting.
o-Sunny-o  +   859d ago
Same story different title. Please Nintendo show us something at E3...
Nevers0ft  +   859d ago
Let me get this straight...

When Nintendo doesn't advertise the Wii U, they're abandoning the console and it's users and are clueless. Yet when they do advertise it's because they're panicking - yeah?

So tell me Kotaku, how exactly IS Nintendo supposed to market the Wii U?

I admit the adverts are a bit cheesy but IT'S NINTENDO, I didn't expect scantily clad women and explosions.
PopRocks359  +   859d ago
It's Kotaku. Besides, wasn't this the same knee-jerk reaction that the "Wii you like to play?" ad campaign received. I really don't see what everyone is freaking out about.

EDIT: Everyone being Kotaku and some of these commenters.

I don't think the Wii U ads are bad. They are aimed towards the demographic that Nintendo wants to attract, Kids and families, and I have no doubt that kids will see that ad and want a Wii U, so they get the job done.
strigoi814  +   859d ago
so wii U is an upgrade..now im confused..
deafdani  +   859d ago
It IS an upgrade, just like the PS3 was an upgrade from the PS2.

People trying to utilize the term "upgrade" in a derogatory manner don't really understand what the word means.
Gamer Muzz  +   859d ago
so a line of videos that show Wii owners seeing the difference between the Wii and the Wii U, and showing them enjoying it as a family...is reaching for a panic button?
I don't get why.
jcnba28  +   859d ago
Another lame article from Kotaku.

It's horrible

As the immortal MS says-

Deal with it!
Stroke666  +   859d ago
one i don't think the adverts are bad, but am i the only one that sees the cynisism in it. gaming media and fantrolls alike were all like "people don't know the wii u isn't a wii peripheral" and in all the adverts the people mention exactly that. like "it has better graphics and a gamepad the doesn't", or that first one where the father just outright says "ididn't realize how different it was until i played it". its like nintendo saying "THERE!, now stfu already!". But of course people complain saying they don't advertise enough yet soon as they advertise there is something wrong with that anyway. c'mon son, pick a side of the fence and stay on it people
sephx22  +   859d ago
All these commercials show the casual side of the Wii U. I thought nintendo said this console will be for the hardcore.
