Mario, Sonic & Co Should Retire from Games

With a rather controversial opinion regarding Nintendo and Sony's characters, Softpedia.com writes:

"Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Wario, Dr. Eggman and all the other arcade/platformer icons should retire! Each and every one of them should be put in a museum and locked there. That's the only way to do it, that's the only thing that should happen if we want to let nature follow its course. There are two main reasons why this is the right thing to do – and it has to be done ASAP."

If they stop using them I will personally track this guy down and make him wish he never posted this article!!

Mr. Ciabai proudly shows why he has no knowledge of brand recognition or trademarks. Fortunately, SEGA, Nintendo and other companies executives know better than him what they are doing.

Did you not read anything of the article? Basically to me it seems like a rant that happens to be true. Mario and Sonic are iconic figures in the gaming industry, but man they have way too many games. And he doesn't disagree that it will sell millions of copies anyway. It truely is sad though that a game like "Mario and Sonic goes to High School" will probably outsell gems like COD4 easily.

lol

I could truly see that happening one day. Maybe if it was a launch title. LOL

I've had enough of the lot of em. None of them work as well in 3D. Zelda yes, but the innovation has gone. Next gen is all about real worlds and story. If you want this stuff, go pick up a Wii i guess. Or buy one of the old consoles. I just don't see why we need enless games of the samer thing.

Now, i loved halo. But i'm bored of it now. Same thing goes for any game in my book. No matter how good, i buy one or two sequels, depending on quality of course, then thats it. I lose interest. I'm ready for the next thing.

I say, only make a sequel if you can bring something new to the table, or continue a n existing story. Tke Shenmue for example. I love those games. Would i buy Shenmue 3? In a heart beat. Why? Not for the graphics, but for the story. The story keeps me coming back. Games with great stories like Shenmue, Half-life etc.. these justify sequels. Like films. books or TV shows. But Mario and sonic? Why? Like the blog said, there are hundreds of these things already out there? Go back and play those.
