'FIFA' boss wants series to be bigger than 'Call of Duty'

"I respect Konami a lot and they produce good games. A lot of people have played their games for ages," he told MCV. "I think having competition is a good thing but we don't consider competition to just be Pro Evolution Soccer. Call of Duty is also competition.

"People that are playing Call of Duty are not playing FIFA. We want them to play FIFA and we want to achieve that by creating the best possible game that we can create.

"That's what we focus on. We want to exceed everyone's expectations and exceed our own expectations and create the best game. Competition or not, these goal are not going to change for us." (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

I don't see how changing from sitting on their couch playing the same CoD game every year to sitting on their couch playing the same Fifa game every year would change anything.
haggishurler  +   952d ago
Basically EA sees Activision selling call of duty titles every single year, without much innovation, and making a fortune and EA wants to do the same.

Ignorance. While there hasn't been a significant change in the look of the game over the last few years (hardware limitations), every new Fifa strives to bring the game experience closer to what we see in real life. The players now have personalities. They're no longer the same models with different faces and improved or lowered stats. This is what the game was like during the last generation. Every player walked, ran, shot, passed the same, but he would do so either better or worse depending on the number in his stats. Now, Lionel Messi feels like Lionel Messi while Cristiano Ronaldo feels like Cristiano Ronaldo. Two completely different players, and EA has been doing a great job improving on this over the last 4 years.

It isn't just about a few new transfers every year. There are real improvements to the gameplay that make it more and more realistic every year. There's no roll over of skill from last year's release to this year's. The new features and changes to the gameplay make for a whole new experience. You have to put in the necessary time to learn and understand everything all over again.

Sit down and play Fifa 10-13 with me and I guarantee you that you will understand why we run out and buy these new releases every year. There's always new and improved features to look forward to. COD has literally been playing the same since COD4. While I still get some fun out of it now and then, with each year I hope and pray that there's change. Something NEW. Last time I felt that way about Fifa was during the ps2 days.

Because Fifa at least makes you want to play football. Whenever my friends and I play FIFA and its a nice day outside, we immediately take the game to the field. A sports game encourages sports, while COD encourages sitting hundreds of hours on the couch getting the best prestige.

I don't really understand the people who offend and theN say to you if you don't like it don't look at it. What do they gain from offending -.-. Grow up guys and respect others instead of this hate that won't bring anything good. You only lower the respect toward you. You are not proving them wrong by saying he's a cancer. That's no reason...

Off topic here but like good guy jamal said, If you can change your avatar to like Arnold Schwarzenegger if you can that is. You know im just trying to make your avatar into a positive, because cancer is spreading to every part, so im guessing Jesus is spreading Good very fast everywhere. Im catholic and im not going to order or command you to change it. Ive just made a suggestion because its not really a cool avatar. Lucky for you we are not muslims. If we are your going to get death threats. You know how sensitive muslims are when it comes to religion.

"People that are playing Call of Duty are not playing FIFA. We want them to play FIFA and we want to achieve that by creating the best possible game that we can create."

Has Fifa's boss seen how some COD players act online. Do you want to devolve your community Fifa boss? Worry less about trying to get CoD players and more about trying attract PES players and more football(not American football btw) fans.
aiBreeze  +   952d ago
Devolve the fifa community? That's not possible, both are equally as bad.

Battlefield proves they don't care. As long as the game is selling, anything goes. They would be fine if their FIFA servers were constant F bombs and screaming kids.

Community behavior doesn't matter, as long as it has one. In EA's eyes.
Qrphe  +   952d ago
Fifa community is about as bad as the CoD community.

"People that are playing Call of Duty are not playing FIFA. We want them to play FIFA and we want to achieve that by creating the best possible game that we can create."

Lol, whoever said that couldn't be more wrong. Most people in the UK only buy COD and FIFA every year. They are the same people.
Reborn  +   953d ago
This is how it usually begins. The last FIFA I purchased was Fifa 10. That's how it will remain. They both have something in common. They should just release expansions, rather than fully fledge games. Then again... it's EA and Activision.

Oh and, FIFA isn't COD. It never will be. One is a sports game, the other is a FPS. Not to mention, if Konami continue improving PES, you'll have more than attracting COD players to worry about.
Diffraction_Fos  +   952d ago
Combine the FIFA series and the FIFA Manager series into one giant package. Make the player-career mode much more in-depth than the current version. PRESTO! Bugs galore....
dangert12  +   952d ago
Don't know where he is getting this from, where im from in the UK it's as if the average gamer gets 2-3 games a year...the yearly cod and fifa and then another game around april/march times lol
Good_Guy_Jamal  +   952d ago
What's with EA's obsession with Call of Duty? Just focus on your own games
Batzi  +   952d ago
EA can keep dreaming.
aiBreeze  +   952d ago
EA will never have a game as popular as cod. Activision/Treyarch know what their community wants and focuses on that and then some.. EA are more interested in what people who aren't buying their games want, this article being a great example of that.
MooseyXTC  +   952d ago
But isn't CoD the FIFA of Shooters?
oof46  +   952d ago
Well, socc..err..futball is the post popular sport in the world, so, it's plausible.
rextraordinaire  +   952d ago
Not in North America. Here's it's Hockey and Football, most people will trade CoD for NHL before FIFA, however good FIFA is.
oof46  +   952d ago
FIFA 13 and CoD II both sold 12 million units world wide.
fucadastates  +   952d ago
@rlacorne what do you meen with that north america statement?

oof46 said the worlds most popular sport in the world (and thats true). regardles of whats "cool addtv" in north america... its stil part of the world, thus part of the "worlds most popular sport" thing.

user7693958  +   952d ago
well good luck with that..

in a Soccer game you an't sit back and fool users
PES in the PS2 keep getting better and better every year and in the PS3 era they sit back and watch, used a old PS2 engine and fail big time.. and most move for FIFA are more complete game with more teams and better online options.

PES just start waiting up last year and PES13 got it right, good enough but they understand know they ant just sit and relax..
PES 14 and + will always evolution and be better.. new engines and updated in every field.
Konami has learn their lesson.

and I'm glad because they made better futbol games.. AE can't never get the gameplay right. is like they don't understand the sport.

FIFA09 was good FIFA10 better but it went seriously down after FIFA11.
same flaws, nothing gets corrected and i feel the game becomes worse
ZodTheRipper  +   952d ago
Try PES, it won me over with PES 13 :)
But don't play it with FIFA in mind, you'll see that it's a much better game. They really listened to their fans.
Soldierone  +   952d ago
Won't happen. Soccer (football) is not popular at all over here in America.

Plus why are you taking a sports franchise and trying to replace a shooter with it? Two different genre's. Even if someone likes soccer, they might prefer to play COD.

Thats like Square going "all the COD players will leave and come play Final Fantasy."
rextraordinaire  +   952d ago
Yeah, and they said they took inspiration from CoD and other western FPS action titles for FFXIII. See where that took them now. ;)
ZodTheRipper  +   952d ago
I hate news like this. They make tons of money yearly without making big changes to their core product and still want more because another company does the same, only even better. The game industry turned way too much into the busines direction this gen.
PirateThom  +   952d ago
The best approach to sports games is to skip the odd years and pick up the even years. Seems to have steered me well thus far.
Tacklebait  +   952d ago
Re-invent fifas gameplay by adding snipers in the stands, predator missiles and attack choppers and then we'd have some hype.

I hope not... otherwise they will start releasing two or three FIFA's every year.

In time it will be, FIFA has been around a lot longer than COD and hopefully stays around for much longer afterwards......I've had to many drinks, now i'm just talking shit!! :)

Jek_Porkins  +   952d ago
Wouldn't soccer have to be more popular in the United States? I mean COD sells tons here, and nobody I know likes or cares about soccer. I would think that it would definitely need to appeal to people in the states, and I've never seen a single friend on any of my friends lists play a FiFa game.
BitbyDeath  +   952d ago
Add in a zombie mode and you'll probably get more of the COD crowd.
Minato-Namikaze  +   951d ago
HAHA! how would a zombie mode work in a soccer game? It might actually be kinda fun if someone does it right.
BitbyDeath  +   951d ago
Not sure but I'd imagine limbs would be flying off when zombies injure one another.
Kenshin_BATT0USAI  +   952d ago
Two completely different games. It's stupid to even say this frankly.

I mean, I love soccer, don't get me wrong, but I'd never buy a sports game simply because I don't like sports games. Vice-versa, I don't really like Call of duty that much either so whatever.

My point being, you can't pull people from different genres. That simply doesn't make sense because you don't offer anything to them.
Minato-Namikaze  +   951d ago
Can you please go talk to Square-enix and Capcom, (namco seems to get it now). Hopefully dumping wada will turn SE around

Fifa is just like all the madden games. A new one every year with patchable changes and at full price. The only difference is that everyone in EU buys fifa and everyone in US buys madden.

And both are horrible games that take no skill.
