Will The Evil Within redefine survival horror?

GameZone's Lance Liebl writes, "Survival horror games are tough to make, mostly because it's tough to scare gamers. The first two Dead Space games managed to pull of some genuine scares, but the third was almost completely void of horror. I can't remember the last time I was scared during a Resident Evil game. For me, and probably for a lot of other people, gore doesn't scare me. Jump scares might startle me for a second, but they don't scare me. What scares me is creepy imagery -- horrifying movement from disfigured creatures and imagery so unsettling that it's the stuff nightmares are made of. And The Evil Within looks to have an abundance of both. " (PC, PS3, PS4, The Evil Within, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

I haven't seen any gameplay yet but I really do hope so!

They dont have to redefine survival horror, they just need to bring it back

Very true. But other companies have attempted to do that and have failed. It looks like Bethesda and Tango know what they are doing with this one though.

The Last of Us looks to bring back Survival. This game looks to bring back Survival and Horror! While this looks good in live action without gameplay I will not try to get to excited.

this...

I cna't believe people are exited with no gameplay from a new IP, that so far look like is copying Silent Hill and Saw in term of art and the script is similar to any other generic script, not that is a bad thing..
but this is a game, let's wait for the gameplay to get exited for.. before getting your hearth broken ..

Thank god it looks like survival horror will make a much needed return

the live action kinda takes me back to 'jill sandwich' or even 'master of unlocking.' Then came in Silent Hill.

Update: Honestly, I only played Siren this generation. I didn't even bother touching the other horror games, so I've saved up 'some' just for this game.

it's got a bit of silent hill vibe to this game. if it's anything like silent hill 2 then this should be awesome.

Hopefully, this game makes publishers rethink of Horror games as a good market. Ever Horror gamer is welcome, especially Amnesia. Any word on the newest Amnesia game?
j-blaze  +   617d ago
they'll redefine and also bring back survival horror, it's a freaking Shinji Mikami game for god's sake!

This wasn't a trailer for some new attraction at Alton Towers? Terrible live action gets no ones blood flowing.

Hopefully has something different going for it.

Absolutely, no doubt, yes!

It has that perfect survival horror aesthetic and design choices that scream the best parts of Resident Evil and Silent Hill. What it offers that's new is to be seen, but I'm sure Mikami has something up his sleeve. All I care about is that it stays true to the genre as pure survival horror, and we've been positively assured about that.

Survival horror didn't die altogether (we still have many indie ventures such as Outlast, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs coming up, and The Last of Us is looking to stroke the genre in parts) but it definitely died in the mainstream. Look at Resident Evil 6, recent Silent Hill, Dead Space 3, Aliens: Colonial Marines etc.

The Evil Within will help the genre gains traction and popularity going into next gen, and that is a fantastic thing. Definitely getting it for PS4, and I hope Sony brings a new Siren game to the console too.

The game would have to IMO, turn you into the perpetrator to achieve this. Legacy of Kain did this brilliantly, where your quest for justice was turned upon its head...

If its a good experience people will buy it.

I hope so, atleast we have the creator of the original RE working on it, i really believe that Survival Horror games lack on Consoles so hopefully this will be one great memorable Survival Horror game that will be available on all platforms.

Meh I was excited for ZombiU and look how that turned out. I will wait to see more of the game first before I jump to any conclusion.

Great video no doubt but.. The only thing I can say, based on the video, is that if someone didn't tell me the title of the game.. I would have assumed it was a new Silent Hill game. That one guy looks eerily similar to Pyramid Head, only difference he carries a hammer instead of a sword and has a box instead of a pyramid on his head.
