"One cardinal rule of game design that doesn't limit its association to one particular realm is to keep players stimulated. Methods designers use as a means of doing so will vary depending on genre conventions and so on, but there is a caution that must be acknowledged: What one person finds stimulating may be harebrained in the eyes of another. This lack of universal understanding can lead to engagement being confused for complication, where the flow turns into this hodgepodge of ideas -- ideas that on their own may be formidable but don't mesh together in the same mold.
