Has Aliens: Colonial Marines Killed The Aliens Game Franchise?

Skewed and Reviewed have not let a site update in progress slow them down and have posted an interesting article that asks if the less than strong response to Aliens: Colonial Marines has killed the Alien game franchise for the time being. They cite the death of the Wii U version of the game and another game that was in production being scrapped. The article also offers suggestions on Alien games that might invigorate the franchise.

The story is too old to be commented.

I don't know about killed but it will definitely make it difficult for anyone trying to develop a Alien game and want to present it to a publisher.

@ zeal0us

"will definitely make it difficult for anyone trying to develop an Alien game"

-but, uhm... that kinda is the definition of killed it... LoL

I can't see anyone getting a green light on an Alien game after Looking at the numbers this one did.

it just needs the right team to come up with a game that exceeds the previous efforts.

Movie licensed games have it tough already with trying to come up with content to differentiate the game FROM the movie.

There are plenty of good games that can make good movies if the teams making them take into account the amount of story and content to use.

Instead of trying to fit what amounts to be several hours worth of gameplay into a 2 hour movie, they split it up over several releases.

The same is true for the gaming side. A movie series does not have to fit into one game. If they did that then it needs to really be a compelling game that is worth the risk of using the license for.

I really had hopes for the wii-u version and how they could use the gamepad as the tracker screen and partial HUD but sadly.....unless Nintendo picks it up and finishes it, it just aint going to happen.

Isn't the thumbnail a huge Prometheus spoiler?

Garethvk1259d ago

Exactly. My main point was that with the Wii U version dead and the survival horror game dead. Sega is likely going to have a hard time getting new games going as well as restoring faith in the brand.

restore faith in the brand by making a good game with the license. Pure and simple.

As far as I see it, almost every "alien" game since AvP2 been killing the franchise as none of them were good games (although as die hard alien and predator fan, I'd say I enjoy AvP2010 when playing with few of my friends, but even I realize its pretty mediocre game with some serious issues)

I was going to say the same thing. Aliens is too strong of a movie franchise to die but geez it really needs justice as far as the gaming industry goes.

It's sad that what looked liked it could be one of the best Aliens games yet turned out to be the absolute worst.

Magnagamer2221259d ago

It's not dead, if they can redo TombRaider they can redo Aliens. I was just thinking that it would be cool if they made a AVP game that had some gameplay elements from Gears of War. The stories from the franchise are great all they have to do is work on the gameplay. Maybe something from the Prometheus storyline after she finds the Engineers.

lets give this thing to GG after they finish shadowfall, lol.

I don't think it's killed the franchise. What Sega needs to do is sell the license to a publisher that won't give the game to just whoever. And, if they do decide to keep the franchise, they need to scrutinize the next dev like crazy. I don't see Gearbox getting many more licensed games after the atrocities that were Duke Nukem Forever and the steamin pile that Colonial Marines became.

Garethvk1259d ago

Gearbox owns The rights to Duke Nukem and have already said there is another in the planning stages.

Parasyte1259d ago

Oh really? I already don't have high hopes for it.

Garethvk1259d ago

Its hard to say. There were in a no win scenario. If they made a new Duke people would say sure like Duke Nukem Forever. That game had to come out and after 14+ years it was so fragmented they did what they could with it. The reason was they had to release it so they could move forward with the franchise.
