Flashback Hands-On Preview: Repressed Memories [Dealspwn]

Dealspwn writes: Paul Cuisset is totally rebooting Flashback, and I'll give you a second to recover if you missed the news yesterday. Breathe. And relax. Since the timeless platformer is such a beloved piece of gaming history, genuinely tense and frightening in parts, seeing Conrad's struggle to regain his fractured memories get the shiny Unreal treatment is both exciting and horribly worrying. On the one hand, this new version is apparently the game that Cuisset always wanted to make, but simply couldn't due to the technological constraints of the early nineties - and he's back at the helm. On the other, he and VectorCell were also responsible for Amy.

I can't wait for the game, don't know why people were so negative about it on YouTube. Oh wait, it was YouTube, that's right...

Buying this game day one. Hope it'll be even half as good as the original was. If so, it'll be a very worthy purchase. :]

... loved the original on the Amiga, so very excited about the HD-remake.

I hope it will live up to to it's potential.

That said, I can understand why people are negative about it, and it's also addressed in the article: The Conrad we thought we knew, and liked/loved, has seemingly been replaced by.... someone else. And I'm not sure if this new 'Conrad' lives up to our memory of 'old Conrad', who was silent, vulnerable, and 'just a guy' stranded in a foreign unknown place.

The 2D gameplay looks fantastic. The stuff that happens in-between.... I'm not so sure about.

Well, to be fair this is only a minute and a half long video. Kinda hard to tell from a short video like that. I'm definitely hoping it'll live up to its potential as well! The original is one of the few games that I constantly fondly remember even to this day, and I always hoped to see an HD remake. I cheered out loud when I saw the first article about it lol.

Same here. Just as I did when it was said there will be a Superfrog HD :)

However, it isn't just the 1,5 minute video that worries me, but moreso the hands-on preview, which mentions the problem after playing it, as well as some other stuff, like gameplay-decisions.

We'll just have to hope for the best I guess. Like I said, the 2D gameplay looks great, and we'll have to see how the rest will play out.
