10 ways the Xbox 720 can win the next gen

Considering the number of rumours about the new Xbox circling around right now, we're considering changing April to Xbox-ril here at TechRadar. And as the stories have come flooding in, the gaming community has been unsurprisingly vocal in letting us know how it feels.
Until now, word has been that the new Xbox will have a feature that would make it only playable online, while saying goodbye to backwards compatibility and - though this third one's the least likely – blocking the use of old games. (Xbox One)

MS seems to consider its competitors to be Apple and Google in the console space. MS seems to be following a different path then Sony. Sony has changed its stance from "It only does everything" on the Ps3 to a very "Gamercentric" experience on the Ps4. MS has seemed to be setting its site on every living room in the developed world. So when a mom goes into a shop and sees the Xbox 720 she says:
"Hey whats that?" ....."So wait you telling me I can watch TV, do Zumba fitness and my son can play Call of War. Count me in." So if Sony's Ps4 is considered "Next gen" but MS calls its competitors Apple and Google and hasnt even mentioned Sony and Valve, is MS actually trying to win this Next Gen of GAME consoles or are they trying to win a different war over IOS(Apple TV) and Android(Google TV) in the living room.

Of course M$ sees Sony as a competitor. Regardless of what other features Xbox has, it is still, mainly, a videogame console. Nothing else could justify the asking price.

Apple and Google make consoles? Aren't IOS and Android operating systems?(like windows/windows phone)

None of that will make it win next gen. Sony already has all the great exclusives and so far unless the xbox is way more powerful or something, sony are looking to come out on top. It may sell more sure but it doesn't look like it will succeed for the hardcore gamers.

ps3 has exclusives, orrrrrr. it HAS to have plenty exclusives due to 3rd party development issues, where you see benefits , i see flaws. althow, they dont sell as mutch as they wished. ps4 its not even out yet and MSFT has been working in full steam for more than 2 years on next gen projects, or you think their studios(22 in total are on vacations for more than 2 years?)
i am waiting not an announcement, im waiting an atomic bomb fromMSFT.

Why does anyone need to "win" anything? How about articles like "how can Sony/MS/Nintendo be profitable and provide better experiences for gamers"? Next Gen isn't here yet and these articles are already getting on my nerves. How can all 3 be winners? Just make your consoles enjoyable for your customers.

MS has a few ways to win. It will just depend on execution and strategy.

Everyone frst thinks games... that true but wrong. Games are a given. Only complete fool would think that these companies arent going to make some great games, new ips , multiplat sequels. Despite all the foolishness people bounce around in the echo chamber 720 will be just as much a game machine as any other machine out there.

The places for opportunity always lies in the differences.

I see this whole Apple tv strategy as a very strong move. If you get people use to your interface and service you grab and appeal to your audience in more than one way. TV with more depth is a new frontier it hasnt went critical mass yet so there is big opportunity for the first one to make it a norm.

Another big thing is kinect. If that style of gaming and or the features kinect enables takes off MS will win easy. Sony has a kinect of their own but its abilities are on a whole inferior to MS kinect. Its very telling that they went with a similar product. That means they know the potential if say kinect duplicates it current success. I think sonys best move against kinect would be to try and marginalize some the advanced stuff by really pushing the shared things in big games. Basically if gamees that use voice command dwarf the motion stuff the Kinect and Pseye4 stay on the same level.

I will look at both offerings and decide on the games. However, "always online" is not a put off for me personally as most of my gaming nowadays seems to be on-line multiplayer. I do wish however MS would change their gold membership. That is, dont block access to apps/services like the browser, Netflix, etc if you're not a gold member. Also, silver members should be able to get a taste of multiplayer. Maybe allow them to try games for up to 1 week after install and restrict them to certain multiplayer modes, limit perks, etc.

Gold members should also get access to unified clan management, I hate managing clans for each game that supports them. I want my clan to challenge other clans across games!
