Remembering Metal Slug

Metal Slug left a solid impression on gamers back in the day with its wildly eccentric visual style and smooth gameplay. How does it stack up in today's world, inhabited by microtransactions and free-to-play? It may be time to remember that the arcade days had their fair share of exploitive mechanics that tried to pull just one more quarter out of the pockets of impressionable children. Not that those games were all bad, of course, just makes for an interesting discussion. (Industry, Metal Slug X, Retro, SNK)
