Five controllers we left behind

The humble video game controller has gone through a lot of changes over the years. Compare the NES pad to the Wii remote, and you could argue that it’s come full circle. But there have been plenty of evolutionary dead ends along the way. Here are five we left behind. (Culture, Retro)

The N64 controller, while definitely unconventional, was actually quite comfortable to hold once you got past the weird shape. Plus it reintroduced the analog stick to us gamers, something that had been left behind for some time.

Honestly I was completely fine with the Xbox controller. It wasn't big to me because being 6'4" I don't have the hands of a performing circus monkey. Loved the triggers too and to add to the value you could kill a cat with that thing with the length of its cord and size. :D

N64 controller was killer. Absolutely awesome!

I couldn't use the old xbox controller. ;__; I'm 5'1", so trying to play the original xbox was a struggle (and I also looked ridiculous. The controller being the size of my face, and all). I was so delighted when they changed the controller. I think the clouds opened up and I could hear a chorus of angels (dramatisation).

I had a weakness, and still do, for the game cube controller. Sure, there weren't too many games for it compared to the competition but man. Dat controller.

I love the style of the the original Xbox controller but it was too big..

i still think the controller s was the perfect one. keep literally all the dimensions the same just move the b/w buttons to the shoulders like they did and it was gold. the 360 controller is a bit too small and the sticks too short, otherwise thats my second fav controller.

I actually loved the Wave Bird. The thing was just so comfortable. Probably the most comfortable I've ever used.

The N64 controller was terrible. Just an ugly mess of a thing.

The old Xbox controller was pretty bad. Not really the size so much as the black and white buttons instead of 4 shoulder buttons like the Dualshock 2.

My all-time favorite is the Dreamcast controller. It's a shame that console failed, as both MS and N have both copied Sega's ideas on the controller as well as the console itself.

Remember the "duke" XBox control pad was first advertised with a *green jewel casing..

..thought that was better looking than the final production blacked-out logo.

Really didn't mind the design or the look but it was quite hefty, felt like holding a big fat hamburger.

I got 2 mint condition XBox dukes but used them only maybe a couple of times.

that big xbox controller was horrible.. The black/white buttons were too hard to press while gaming.. I actually liked the N64 controller
