Pocket Gamer: In summary, Epic Devs's Epic Pirates Story wasn't as good as we were hoping it would be.
It looks great, but it lacks the variety required to keep us playing for very long.
Despite its simplicity, however, you may still be finding yourself a little lost regarding what to do next in the game.
The Role-Playing Game is one of the most hardcore genres in video games. Players build up their skills and customize their characters by putting their noses to the grindstone and killing bad guy after bad guy. RPGs immerse players in fantasy worlds they’re encouraged to explore with story-driven gameplay. Porting this experience to Google’s mobile platform has been a hit or miss experience with many games simply being old iPhone or console games, but if the last five months are any measure of what 2013 will be like for Android RPGs, then it’s shaping up to be a banner year.
Epic Pirate Story is a Kairosoft inspired pirate RPG created by Epic Devs. You start the game by picking your pirate’s name, gender and the name of your Caribbean island. The plot is a simple but satisfying revenge arc against a pirate king named Duke A. Blizzardo who captured your father. Your starting island base is fairly bare: it has your house, a tavern (naturally since a pirate is nothing without his liquor), a harbor and a rundown sloop. Over the course of the game you amass fame through your exploits, acquire followers, seize treasure and build up your island until you’re ready to face Blizzardo.
I somehow can't enjoy complex RPG's on a smart phone. Infinity Blade is probably one of the few I played through.
Because of extreme time constraints and my love of the genre, and because there are a few good ones, I can. But it did take that trifecta to make it happen.
GameZebo: No sense beating around the bush about it: Epic Pirates Story, the first game from indie studio Epic Devs LLC, borrows heavily from the popular Kairosoft model, with colorful pixel art graphics, cute, chatty characters and simplified combat and city management mechanics. In fact, the game's description on Google Play specifically mentions that it will remind you of Kairosoft's work and if you're familiar with that particular oeuvre, it will.
