This genre needs to be revitalized. Some of the best times I have ever had in gaming come from this genre. Here's to hoping to get the bejesus scared out of me once again.

Couple of examples...

Fatal Frame: Crimson Butterfly is the scariest game I have ever played because of the approach the game made you take at uncovering the story and figuring out what happened. The camera angles, shadowing and making you look through the camera to get a better look at things created the perfect ambiance for something to pop up and scare the bejesus out of you. Love that game for introducing me to this genre of gaming and for many sleepless nights.

Resident Evil:Nemesis also had its moments.
