Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon Review (3DS) | Nintendo Okie

Tony Miller of Nintendo Okie writes, "Way back in the year 2001 a few things happened, well two really. The first was that in March of that year I married my beautiful wife. The second, and more relevant to this subject, is that the GameCube launched in North America. With it came a small handful of games, one of which starred Luigi. People were up in arms because Luigi’s Mansion wasn’t the Mario game that they wanted. That was a game that ended up being very special to me because I was playing that game the day my daughter was born, well sort of. As a result the game holds a special place in my gaming library and I pull it off the shelf at least once a year to play it. There aren’t many secrets left in that game for me to uncover and I can roll through it in a couple of lengthy play sessions. It’s sort of a family entertainment thing for us around Halloween.

For years I’ve been practically begging Nintendo for a sequel to the game and right around the time that the 3DS was announced so too was a sequel to Luigi’s Mansion. Then delays kept happening and dates kept getting pushed. I was beginning to worry that the game was never going to come out and I was worried that being on a handheld meant it wasn’t going to live up to the expectations I had set for it. Well, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is out. Was the wait worth it?"

Some great games there. Still waiting for the switch to become a real powerhouse with more of what Nintendo is known for. I feel that with 2 years in, it has been slow.

Luigi’s Mansion gave Mario’s brother his own identity

Before Luigi’s Mansion came out in 2001, Luigi was stuck in Mario’s shadow. Luigi started life as a green-colored palette-swap for Mario in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros., and that was his role going forward for a long time. If a Mario game had two players, Luigi would be called into action.

That’s why the announcement of Luigi’s Mansion felt like such a big deal. Every major Nintendo home console had launched with a Mario game. Now, the GameCube was going to debut in 2001 alongside a solo Luigi adventure. Finally, the little brother plumber was getting the spotlight.
