Is Uncharted 2 The Most Influential Game Of The Generation?

Total Revue: For nearly every third person game that has been released post-Uncharted 2 and even third person games on the horizon, it seems they have all been influenced by Naughty Dog’s masterpiece in some ways. It’s made me question whether Uncharted 2 has been the generation’s most influential game. (PC, PS3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Xbox 360)

Uncharted 2 might be one of the best of this gen, but I don't see other games being influenced by it. Maybe Tomb Raider. I dunno, I play many action games anyway so don't go by my judgement.
dboyc310  +   538d ago
In a way I think it has. It was one of the first few titles that brought the cinematic feel to video games that now most games have. However I believe that the most influential game of this Gen was CoD4. It basically set the standard for multiplayer which was the "it" factor this Gen.
TheFinalEpisode  +   538d ago
Completely agree. For better or for worse most games(even beyond the shooter genre) took cues from CoD4.
FATAL1TY  +   538d ago
★ Uncharted 2 is the best game this generation ★
silverbeld  +   538d ago
Agreed, I do love Uncharted 2 a lot but the most influenced? Thats hard to say.

But COD 4 has the best moments and cinematic feel of all this gen.

When you crawling in the grass as a sniper and soldiers walking by with huge Tanks.

That moment alone is EPIC.

Best game this gen is COD4.

Not to mention the standard how the control scheme is being made for all shooters.

Yeah when you see how many games have been ruined by being CoDified, CoD4 has to be the most influential game. It sucks but it's true.
omi25p  +   538d ago
In no disrespect to Uncharted 2 its a brilliant game. Buts its not even close to being influential because it takes so much from other gamers i,e

Tomb raider
Gears of War

Id say Gears of War is the most influential game this generation.

It was the first game to really show off the graphics this generation. It showed you could do a gory dark shooter. Showed everyone how to do a cover system properly. (Just look how many games copy that)

Helped launch the current Xbox that had the smallest fanbase last gen right up to being one of the most bought entertainment items every year.

It was also the first game to really show off online gaming this generation and how good it could be. Well Gears and COD 2

We started seeing allot of explosions, games have become more cinematic after its release + allot of "OH shit!" moments. They are everywhere!

wait for the e3 demos to see what I mean. some recent example .. BF4.

Donnieboi  +   538d ago
Well, COD 4 could be to blame for all of these set piece moments too.
Twignberries  +   538d ago
If you look at the game from a blatant genre standpoint then no, it probably hasn't influenced that many games. But try to think of its core elements, and what made it so great and stand out above all other games. It's cinematic quality, fluidity and seemlessness between set piece moments and gameplay is something that was never done at that time, and probably still hasn't QUITE been matched today. Ever since it's release basically every AAA action game to come out has tried to emulate uncharted 2's mojo. How can you not see this?
showtimefolks  +   538d ago
people always say UC series is like indiana jones or tomb raider but none of those games ever got to the high quality of Uncharted series IMO. As good as old TR games were they were still not perfect in every sense

UC series is the reason why we got a TR reboot, and i know people will hate my comment. ND have set a standard for what story telling in cinematic action adventure game should be

MGS peace walker
Uncharted 2
MGS4
Yakuza 3
Infamous series
fallout 3

these are my top games of this gen
MysticStrummer  +   538d ago
That's a good list of games and everything, but the topic is "most influential".
Root  +   538d ago
Tomb Raider....REALLY

Come on, it says "this generation". Tomb Raider Ledgends and Underworld were crap and Tomb Raider was basicaly Uncharted with a female lead without good voice acting and character development, good game however it was not Tomb Raider at heart

''Tomb Raider was basicaly Uncharted with a female lead without good voice acting and character development'' Seriously, what drugs you use ?
Double_Oh_Snap  +   538d ago
Don't think so, but I freaking love Uncharted. Not just Uncharted 2 either. 1,2,and 3 I love them all.

There my favorite games this gen. Just because I love the characters and the experience of Uncharted overall.

Only fitting I guess considering Crash Bandicoot 1,2, and 3 were my favorite PSX games. Unfortunately Jak was not my favorite on PS2 while I loved it that honor goes to Kingdom Hearts 1 an 2.

The Last of Us... just DAMN!

This for better or worse depending on which side you fall. For me Call of Duty 4 was amazing but I wish it never existed.
Sandmano  +   538d ago
I agreed with you but my best memories and best online experience this gen was with COD 2 such food times with that's games MP , COD 4 was Amazing but there's nothing like COD 2...
BlmThug  +   538d ago
Completely agree. Love it or hate it, CoD 4 did change gaming as we know it
BlaqMagiq24  +   538d ago
I 1000% agree. If it made companies like Capcom have to switch up their priorities from RE fanbase to CoD fanbase and even Naughty Dog with UC3's multiplayer, you know it's had a big influence.
Morpheuzpr  +   538d ago
Yup it turned people who where looked down on for choosing videogames as their hobby into "Gamers" (hate that word). It made the industry believe that all a game needs to be successful is being noob friendly. Now every developer make their games thinking of the noobs instead of the real videogames aficionados that made this industry what it is.
Tundra  +   538d ago
ND took gameplay cinematics and dialogue to a whole new level. The dynamic levels such as the train level in U2 are amazing. Character interaction, development and dialogue really stand out in this game. It's obvious many devs took notes after U2 nabbed so many awards.
Ultr  +   537d ago
Indeed
Buenoblue83  +   538d ago
No, Gears of war is surly.
Irishguy95  +   538d ago
Yep, perfected Tps first. I dont' see how how Uncharted 2 is the most influential...who did it influence? It also came out mid way through the generation. Gears brought about the whole tps thing and online focus. Cod 2 also gets mention for the online kick off.

Gears was quite frankly boring and has a very clunky control scheme and physics.

Uncharted 2 deserves all the praise it gets. Eg most awards for a video game ever (over 200).
andibandit  +   538d ago
Gears actually has a good story altho it was told in a confusing way
MysticStrummer  +   538d ago
No to UC2, and no to Gears. Look how many games were ruined by an attempt to make them as popular as CoD and you have to admit CoD4 was the most influential game.
Why o why  +   538d ago
One of them for sure. What a leap. Playing uncharted 2 reminded of the jump I felt when I saw gears of war for 1st time. When I saw that I knew I was in the next gen
DRM-Killz  +   538d ago
One of if not THE best? Oh hellz yes, influential? Maybe.
porkChop  +   538d ago
No. It's an amazing game and it's influenced some games, sure. But no game has been more influential than Call of Duty 4. That game changed everything. Even Uncharted 2's multiplayer was influenced by CoD4.
Drakesfortune  +   538d ago
Love the game and long may drake and uncharted continue!
KillrateOmega  +   538d ago
Amazing game? Yes.

Most influential game? Doubtful.
SageHonor  +   538d ago
Nope
SOULJER  +   538d ago
YES. It is. My buddy who owns a X-box. Would come over my house, and break night playing uncharted 2. He name his new born son at the time Drake.
coolbeans  +   538d ago
I think the "influence" posters are contending here is in regards to gameplay, not naming a child or half-tuck/three-quarter tucked-in shirt styles(<-which we can all agree Drake was in fact the most influential in that regard).
sourav93  +   538d ago
Don't know about influential, but it sure is my favourite game this gen, or perhaps of all time.

Capt-FuzzyPants  +   538d ago
This is something that needs to be revisited years down the line. Personally I think Uncharted 2 will influence quite a bit of developers, but not as much as some other games. Uncharted is more of a revision of action adventure games. Almost like ND perfected the genre. They don't do a lot of new things. Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite will probably be more influential for their stories alone. And there obscure settings. Those games thry new things in the story departmkent.
georgenancy  +   538d ago
yes,i have to agree on this one.Look at the tomb raider reboot, which is clearly an uncharted 2 clone and all those other games which are trying to much the blockbuster spectacle mastered by among thieves
Imalwaysright  +   538d ago
No it isn't. I see nothing from Uncharted on TR. I do however see something from PoP, RE4, Winback and MGS on TR reboot. A game that doesn't have an ounce of originality can't influence other games.
Ultr  +   537d ago
You obviously don't want to see the simlilarities.
Bit there are a ton of things that TB took from Uncharted.
This is nothing bad.
miyamoto  +   538d ago
Definitely
hano  +   538d ago
Bah, it's not even as revolutionary as Gears of War, I think that game sells more too.
Only revolutionary game released by Sony was Shadow of the Colossus.

gears of war outsells all sony exclusives combine not trien to be a fanboy its just fact look it up saw a video on ign where greg miller lost a bet because of it. Still a great franchise though

They both are at around 18million.

And by the time the generation is over Uncharted will have overtaken Gears.

FoxHound_  +   538d ago
I think uncharted 2 very well may be the best game this generation but as everyone else is saying cod 4 is the most influential. I mean look at uc3's online, anyone who plays it can clearly see they've taken successful features from past cod's and translated it into their own game.

There are so many great games of this generation on ALL platforms. PC, PS3 and XBOX 360.
sway_z  +   538d ago
The Uncharted Series (UC2 - Among Thieves my personal favourite) is how cinematic games should be done.

Amazing script, witty dialogue, excellent characterization, fantastic plot and the graphics set a benchmark across multiple genres. I could go on and on....but you would have to had played it 'thoroughly' to understand.

One of the first games where I was completely engrossed and believed everything about the characters, locations and plot.

Stand out moment - You're climbing a structure or rock, the camera pans out and you see an amazing sense of scale as Nathan Drake is reduced to a speck on the screen.

If you're new to PS3 (welcome!) pick up all 3 games on the cheap as they'll be remembered long after PS4 has landed!

Uncharted on PS4 ....Imagine the possibilities!!

coolbeans  +   538d ago
I wouldn't go so far in regards to script and plot. In Uncharted 2's case, it's...rather trite (dozens of plot points can be found in TR2, in fact). Still a fun, well-paced ride but practically every villain in the series has been a typical one-dimensional, mustache-twirling archetype we've seen swirling about the industry.

I know one thing for sure is the uncharted series was the 1st game to bring a movie to life but experience it while playing it. Its what set the bar where it is today with cinematic gameplay. Its why so many love it. Ppl who enjoyed the new tomb raider who never played an uncharted game now know why so many love the uncharted series.

No it's Call Of Duty. You must not know much about games.
Also all those scripted sequences... Halflife populized those, about a decade back. Geez, kids these days.
TUGA  +   538d ago
Agreed. Its like most of the N4g users started gaming this generation.
sway_z  +   538d ago
I don't think the article attempts to portray the Uncharted series as pioneering a genre...more refining it and reinvigorating the action/adventure genre.

Half life is a classic no doubt, but let's not pick bones over this.

If you wanna get deep ....Wolfenstein/Doom is more influential than COD. Geez, old grumpy farts these days ;)
#25.1.1 (Edited 538d ago ) | Agree(5) | Disagree(0) | Report
TUGA  +   538d ago
@ Sway Wolfenstein started a genre on its own. Wolfenstein not only is more influential than CoD but is also more influential than 99,9% of all the games this industry has seen.
MysticStrummer  +   537d ago
When the topic is Most Influential Game of the Generation, you kinda have to name games from this generation. Half Life, Wolfenstein, and Doom were undeniably influential, but they were several generations back.

Is Uncharted 2 The Most Influential Game Of The Generation?
No.

I would say that that title goes to the first Bioshock. Everything about that game was done right all the way to the twist at the end.

Advice... Grab a dictionary and find what Influential means and then come back.

CoD4

ZBlacktt  +   537d ago
Metal Gear Solid 4. One game that raised the PS3 sells up 4003%. At a time when the console was still $499 and $599. Sold 1.4 million on day one. Again at a time the PS3 was having a hard time in selling. A game that got so many 100 perfect scores. One that's graphic's still to this date are not even out dated. A story line so strong and power. Even grown men might cry.
