4/09/2013 Preemptive I Told You So: Wii U To Outsell PS4 And Xbox 720 This Holiday Season

GotGame: We’ve had a long line of doomed consoles from the DS (which was bound to be destroyed by Sony’s more powerful PSP), to the Wii (pre launch everyone had written it off), the PS3 (599 US Dollars), to the 3DS (my godz the iPhonez are going to keel it), the Vita, and now the Wii U. We even have the Xbox 720 getting its fair share of doom and gloom before the system has even been announced! We need something to bash for cheap hits, and our collective history of awful predictions hasn’t stopped us from hopping aboard the doom train.

The demand for the next offerings from MS and Sony will be through the roof as opposed to the Wii U. I could walk into most stores in my area and pick up a Wii U the day it released. I doubt the same will ring true with the PS4 and Next Box but I already have my camping gear ready to go.

well that is pretty much guaranteed to happen. Its very hard for consoles to meet demand on the 1st month or so. By then the WiiU will be releasing Mario Kart, Mario 3D and WindWaker HD, the same combo of games that gave a huge boost to the 3DS sales. Its not like Sony or MS dont do the same, Nintendo simply has done it for longer (because they have been around longer,shocker...) were you even aware that Killzone SF is the 5th Killzone game in 7 years? 6th if you count the HD remake.. God of War? same thing, 5 games in 7 years. Similar thing for Halo, Gears of War, etc, etc

And you know what, not only did I purchase all those mario games, I purchased all the Killzones, GoW, Halo's, Gears, Assasins Creed, etc. I also buy a lot of new IPs.

I dont judge games based on their name, i judge them based on their quality, and they are all quality titles

Compare the number of Killzones or Gears of war or even Assassins creed with the number of Mario inspired games on a Nintendo. I guarantee there are more Mario games out there than any other, Some fresh new ideas is what Nintendo needs instead of trying to ride the wave of familiar franchises.

Two of the supposed 5 games your claiming have been in the killzone franchise haven't even released yet so that doesn't count, one of the killzones is a psp title and killzone one was a ps2 titles so realistically they only released 4 games so far in the franchise on 3 separate platforms.

since its too many to write ill post a link to the wiki for how many Mario games there have been, I counted at least 12 just for the wii.

I dont recall saying anything about the shovelware.. yes its there, I wont say to anyone you should buy it, but to go from that to say that the games Nintendo make are not of great quality is a totally different thing.

You say rehash after rehash of the same thing? Most Nintendo games have the same or even more changes between each iteration than some of the ones mentioned in my previous comment. Differences between Uncharted 1,2 and 3. Tighter combat and better graphics, and yet each of them are great. Killzone? Gears? Resistance?

All of those games are part of a franchise with established foundations, so its normal for them to be similar while improving certain aspects.

So just as some of those franchises might have very similar games, Nintendo has that too, 2D mario games are all very similar, Mario Kart? the same thing.. but they have many other games that constantly change with each games. The Mario RPG's? all so very different, StarFox, all very different(not necesarily for the better), even Zelda that keeps such a similar structure usually has very different mechanics and tone.

those 2 killzone games are coming out this year, so yeah, its still the same... and i wasnt even counting the PSOne game. Killzone 2, 3, Liberation, Mercenaries, HD Collection, Shadowfall. All of them are the same type of game, except perhaps liberation.

My point is, why even take all Mario games as a whole when you know they are completely different games? Or are you saying that if I bought Mario Kart Wii I shouldnt get Mario Part, Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, etc because they are all the same?
Thats just being closed minded... Nintendo actually rarely releases 2 games of the same franchise (or the same genre when it comes to Mario) in a single generation

Nintendo doesn't shove anything down gamer's throats because they have a choice whether to buy their games or not. Interestingly enough, it seems that millions of people choose to buy Nintendo games, most likely because they recognise the inherent quality of the products.

Nintendo have refined these games to the point that they are the benchmark against which all similar games are compared. Love or hate them, they are masters of platform, kart and action adventures genres. A fact recognised by many other developers of games you probably do enjoy.

Unlike the Wii when it launched, the WiiU has none of the "must have" appeal that allowed it to sell out everywhere. The WiiU - being a year old by the time this holiday hits - will also have lost its new-ness, while the PS4 and 720 (if the 720 launches) will both be the new, shiny thing for people to buy on impulse. You can bet that if both Sony's and Microsoft's console are on the market, both companies will be spending millions on advertising space to out-do one another. And Nintendo will get lost in the noise.

I'm sorry, but after the first year, it's an uphill battle. All of the easy, early adopters have already purchased the system.

No one knows the specs of the next xbox and we don't know the price of the Next Xbox or PS4. We don't even know that much about them.

No one knows what will happen when the next gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft so you cant say that they will walk all over the WiiU.

If you look back to last year everyone on here was saying the PSV was going to walk all over the 3DS yet it is not. The same was said about the PS3 walking all over the 360 yet it did not.

The only thing we do know is that no one knows what will happen when the next xbox and PS4 are out and we don't know if the WiiU sales will go through the roof or tank in the next 12 months.

They will announce next gen versions of all the big games once the consoles have launched. This should not interfere with sales for current gen versions if they keep a lid on it until after the next gen has launched.

From what Ive gathered, because of the size of the instal base for both 360/ps3, most AAA next gen games will receive a watered down last gen version.

If nintendo cuts the price this fall, releases probably 2 first party titles (any two will do but most likely 3D mario and mario kart), gets that monolith soft title out, possible 3rd party suprises (Nintendo still hasn't done their 3rd party direct they promised) and on top of that Sony and Microsoft don't do a tremendously better job stocking their systems than last time, then the Wii U will outsell.

Wii U will have a far bigger inventory than either Sony or MS come holiday season. You know it is virtually impossible for either MS/Sony to meet the demand at launch.

Wii U should have released more titles by the time the PS4/720 launch happens and will outsell the PS4/720 launch consoles by default.

But then Wii U will get trounced in sales when more PS4/720 stock arrives at retail.

how this will iron it's way holiday season. Wii U will definitely have some games coming this summer and into fall. I think the PS4 price point is what will be the deciding factor. Although unlike Nintendo, Sony is planning on doing a worldwide launch of PS4.

The ps4 is already in high demand and Xbox has a loyal fan base, if e3 comes around and Sony shows off a killer line up for the ps4 and Xbox debunks some of the rumors and shows good exclusives then the next box will also be in high demand... Wii u is already getting left out by some multi- platform games like battlefield 4, it seems highly unlikely that wii u will outsell ps4 or Xbox 720... you guys do realize... wii sold a lot last gen because it was first of all the cheapest console, second of all it sold an idea of "fun" that pretty much vanished after you play 30 mins of it and never touched it for two years, then it spread like wildfire because people were having parties or family dinners and the wii shined bright in these situations where people get to play 10 mins and have quick bursts of fun

now...for wii u to succeed it would have to win back old customers, and sadly most people don't fall for it the second time.

Personally, I am looking forward to Bayonetta 2, Eternal Darkness (Nintendo Renewed the IP), Fatal Frame (Nintendo CO owns it now), Xenoblade 2. All of these games are not your typical Nintendo IP's. You can add all of the typical ones to the list of games I am looking forward to, Like Zelda.

Some of these games will help sell the system, but only IF they come out sooner than later.

Maybe they should sack Miyamoto and hire you to think outside the box for them. Whether you like them or not motion controls and tablet controllers are thinking outside the box. Sony practically copied the wiimote and MS made us suffer with 'better with Kinect'. If the gamepad takes off, how long before we see copies of them. MS is already crowing about Surface and Sony has the Vita link, but both suffer the same mistake as last time. They were not built as part of the system, rather as add-ons. Neither MS or Sony can be accused of thinking out of the box.

Nintendo has been innovating for probably longer than you've been alive. They have either pioneered or made standard shoulder buttons, start and select, d-pad, four action buttons in a diamond layout, analogue thumb sticks, rumble, situation sensitive action buttons, stereoscopic, dual screens, etc..

Apart from dual analogue thumb sticks, what has Sony done that is thinking outside of the box? How has MS innovated gameplay beyond charging for a good online service? I own all consoles, including Vita and 3DS, and see merrit for each. What's the sales ratio of 3DS to Vita at the moment?

Time will tell for The wii u. I personally hope it goes well, just as I hope the PS4 and Nextbox does well too. But then I'm not a fanboy and can appreciate good games and platforms regardless of who makes them. Hell, I'd buy one made by Black & Decker if the games were as good as Nintendo's, Naughty Dog or Bungie.

the only way that happens is if Sony & MS can't keep up with stock demands for the holiday. That is why I always felt the best time to release a console would be during the late summer / early fall that way by time the holiday rolls around there should be plenty of stock available.

Joe casual who just wants to get something for his kids for X-mas is going to buy whats on the shelf & available even if it's not exactly what he or she wanted.

Once Joe casual has bought his system more than likely that is the only system they will be buying and that is a sale that Sony or MS lost and will never get back just because of a stupid release window & lack of stock for the time of the year they choose to release.

You are right, the guy is basically using numbers and past console holiday stats to make his point... Not to mention as he stated, the PS3 had the benefit of riding high off the PS2 dominance train. But the difference is that PS2 was really showing its age and PS3 looks like it might have another 1-2yrs in it, before its fanbase decides to upgrade to something new. Of course early adopters will get the consoles and the hysteria amongst them will be to epic proportions. But there's just no way of being able to predict the flow of market interest each year, let alone at the start of a new console generation. The one factor people fail to acknowledge, that it's been 7yrs since the last group of systems came out and a new generation of gamers come with those 7yrs that went by...

I've learned long ago not to count on all the commenters on N4G having actually read the article. Basically people go "hey it says Wii U in the article, so I'll just post what I think about the Wii U in the comments". It's just the way it is.

On the bright side though, for every 10 or so people who don't read the article, or read skim the article, there will be one person who actually read it, which is alot better than what I'd be doing without N4G. Alot of people, like yourself, actually gave thoughtful well reasoned comments. As for the rest of them, I can't worry too much. If you're going to write on the internet and you're not ready for heavy and often ill informed criticism.... then uhhhh well you shouldn't write on the internet.

For the record, I exaggerated a bit on what I think the 720 and PS4 will do. I think they will outperform their predecessors. With things like youtube and the general growth of the internet, and the culture created by video games companies and even guys like Apple, companies are MUCH better at building hype. But, the overall economy, a more competitive electronics, and the continuing strength of the 360 and PS3 will hurt them. I'd predict about 3 to 3.2 million for the PS3. The X-Box is still a bit of a wild card but I really don't like the moves M$ has been making for the last several years, so I have less hope for the 720. Probably along the lines of 2.8 million.

If Sony and Microsoft are smart, they'll empty their piggy banks and collectively try to make sure the next COD is only on next gen consoles. If Call of Duty is only on next gen, we'll see a much quicker adoption rate for those consoles.

It's not hard to be rational when brand loyalty isn't exactly your thing. Unfortunately that's a problem the majority of N4G has. I'm someone that appreciates all that gaming has to offer and it would be pretty stupid of me to not play or irrationally hate a game just because it's on a particular console.

Don't get me wrong here, I have no problem with a fanboy that stays loyal to his brand. If you have a preference and that company serves your needs well then by all means stick with that company. But the second you decide to hate and be rude to the rest of the gaming community just because they don't have that same preference or because they like something else, that's when I have a problem. That's the type of fanboy that I absolutely despise. They're the ones that keeps flame wars raging and the gaming community segregated.

Just because you complained about it- and honestly, given how much hit-seeking makes it way into the site, how can you blame people for not getting past an article's title?- I decided I'd read your article.

How the consoles did at launch: This is valid, but, honestly, I don't think you explored it far enough. Yes, the Wii U was, by year's end, in line with at LEAST the PS3's sales. But the PS3 also suffered supply issues like the 360 did. Furthermore, the sales of Nintendo's system have been rather front loaded: after the first month or so, the sales have gone off a cliff, including the Wii U seeing (literally) record low sales for at least one month this year. Sure, that's after the holidays, but it's important to consider when you're thinking about the interest that'll be there for it this upcoming holiday.

720 Prediction: Reasonable. The problem with trying to predict the 720 is that there's virtually nothing known about it. If all the rumors turn out to be true, I don't think the 720 will sell well at all at launch. It can do better if only some of them are- and some of them WILL be, I'm certain of that- but I see most core gamers(who make up the brunt of early adopter sales) waiting for a while, especially if the games aren't there.

PS4 Prediction: I don't think the PS2 was winding down at all. In fact, didn't the PS2 outsell everything but the Wii for something like two years after its predecessor released? Regardless, your prediction also leaves out the ability to drop the price of the PS3 before the PS4 launches, which allows for the PS4 to release at a lower price point. I don't see, at least at the start, the system going for much of a wider market than the PS3, either.

Wii U Prediction: For the Wii U to outdo the others, Nintendo is going to have to get it out to the public that it's more than just an add-on for the Wii. And yes, people DO believe that. It's going to need quite a few of its big-ticket games to launch(which will be somewhat worrying for future years), and it will need to look like a larger jump over current gen consoles than it does right now. And with the comparatively cheap PS3/360 on the market, and the new and more technically flashy and impressive PS4/720 being the new things released, it'll be in a sort of no man's land... which is where it already seems to be finding itself with many third parties. Hopefully, that'll change, but losing the likes of GTA, Battlfield, and CoD(which you mentioned here but not in the article) could make the system look less desirable. First party games will drive sales, but many of those who would be interested already grabbed a Wii U, so it's unclear whether those titles will provide a boost in holiday sales.

The truth is: the casuals HAVE left Nintendo. They won't see a need to ditch their Wii for a Wii U. The core, on the other hand, seem to be waiting for the Wii U to prove itself. If there's difficulty capturing the attention of these crowds, the Wii U may not see an improvement in sales period, let alone at the holidays.

the wii/wiiU is a childs toy. No real gamer is going to buy it the only reason it sells is because its cheap and thats what parents will buy for there younger kids.

It all depends on the next xbox really. Lets face it the PS4 and the Xbox are what hardcore and the people who play COD and FIFA want.

Now the 360 and PS3 have split the market share. 77/78 million (I think) each. Which combined is around 140 million. Those 140million are the market share they are both aiming for.

So lets say example one, the WiiU come December has been out for a year, maybe a price cut and to date (going off how it's sold in the 5 months so far) you are looking at over 5million units. Shipping 500k units a month, again this is all rough.

Now this is where the Xbox comes in. At the moment there is a lot of negative press. However for arguments shake lets say that the worse things where BS. There are many who maybe where going to jump ship but decide to stay, there will be those who maybe stick due brand loyalty. Bits lets say they start selling 400k a month.

Then in comes the PS4, now they may do the same, or maybe a bit better due to many people liking the way they are going. So lets say they ship 450k units a month.

In this case the WiiU would of 'won'.

But then lets say that the xbox does have the always on, blocked second hand game, and is more focused on apps and kinect rather then games. Then those gamers are going to go to the PS4. Now you may say 'well why not the WiiU?'. A very valid argument, and I will factor that in.

So the Xbox loses 150k units a month to the WiiU and PS4. Now I think it's fair to say many gamers are holding off for a Xbox/PS4 so 125k should go to Sony whilst the remaking 25k goes to Nintendo.

Meaning 525k units a month for the WiiU and 575k units a month for the PS4.

Now all these figures mean nothing. The same as the article, its just someone wanting to try and be different.

What you have to remember is that before the Wii came the N64 and the Gamecube. Now they did 33million and 21million. Why didn't they do as well as the Wii? Both had Mario games, both had Mario Kart games, both had Super Smash games, both has Zelda, Metroid etc.

Yet even combined they only JUST add up to half of the Wii sales. I know why, but I want someone who disagree with me to tell me why.

I didn't make all this just to be different for the sake of being different. I truly believe it.

There is a BIG difference between the situation Nintendo was in now and with the Cube.

First off, you' mentioned they both had Mario, Smash, Zelda, etc. You fail to mention Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Party, and so on. You may not think these are a big deal, but they are.

Furthermore, Nintendo's franchises have had a lot more exposure. 33 million or so people played Mario Kart on the Wii due to the hype of the Wii. More people exposed to the franchises mean more potential sales for the Wii U. Exposure is important.

Wii fit was aimed at casuals, same as the console. Mario Kart came out when the Wii hype was still high.

All the best selling games came between 2006-2009. The hight of Wii fever, games released after 2009 weren't as strong.

Already you see a decline. A Mario game only doing 7million on a console with a user base of 99million?

In its first 2 months the Wii sold 2million consoles. Then went onto to sell 1million or more until a year later where at Christmas time they sold almost 5million in one month. So why isn't the WiiU doing the same?

And you still didn't answer the question, why wasn't the GameCube and the N64 as popular as the Wii?

The PS3 and PS4 will outsell the Wii U this holiday season. The 720 will, as well.

The Nintendo will succeed. Wii U is a more Kid friendly system. MS & Sony cater more to Hard Core gamers. Which is great. How ever they both lack attention to that under 10 audience. Most parents won't buy a PS4/Xbox720 for their young kids. Their games are too violent and they hardly have any game line up for kids. They might come up with one or two games, but not enough to justify the cost of the system. Wii U is next generation. "Next generation Nintendo!" That's all Nintendo needs. And they were able to make it backwards compatible.
I doubt MS/Sony will do the same thing. It's inevitable that millions of console owners will be left in the dark once the new systems come out and support for the old systems are discontinued. The hardest part for Sony/MS will be the transition to the new consoles and software sales as well. Reality is they are going to start from scratch to build their base again. The record software sales they have now, will take them few years to regain.

I can see this happening. The Wii U will be the least expensive of the three and it will have the most games out for it. It's not rocket science. Of course how it performs versus the other two is not indicative of who will finish this gen in 1st place.

Nintendo will have the same advantage that it had last-gen ~ Price. Both the Wii U and the 3DS are an investment right now, but they're not the most expensive devices in their categories.

It's cool that the PS4 and the 720 have the "totally awesome specs that will be able to run these totally awesome engines that power these totally awesome and beautiful games" - that everyone is drooling over -but all that comes with a price(tag) - and a hefty one at that.

On the PS4 side of things; It's price has to be at around $450 or more. If you want the Remote Play/ second-screen features that the Vita has to offer that's an extra $300+ dollars. Now throw in at least two launch games, both priced at $60 - that's an extra $120. Okay now let's add an extra controller - let's say about 60 dollars as well. Now, mix all that up:

Minus the Vita = $630 (plus tax).
With the Vita = $930 (plus tax).

Now you see? That's a hefty price - and that's just GUESSING the price of the PS4 will be $450 the least.

Can't really say much about the X720, but even that may not be far behind the price of the PS4. The economy of 2013 isn't the economy of 05/06. Things are much worse. Money is tighter and more people are out of work. Not everyone is rolling in dough. The PS4 and 720 may have the super-powerful tech that has people drooling, but it also comes with that super-powerful price. It's okay to want nice things, but too many people like to buy these nice (yet expensive) things with money they don't have - and then what?

The gaming industry seems to be moving faster than the money it takes to fuel it. If that really is happening, what's gonna happen next? Sony can't afford to struggle with sales of the PS4, literally can't afford. They're the ones who are in the worst financial shape. Yes, I know both devs and gamers are worshiping them at this point, but that doesn't change the fact that they really need to hit it with the PS4, or they could be the first one to be "doomed" and I don't wish any doom on ANY of the big-three.

price is not the sole, or even the primary, reason why the wii sold as well as it did. it was casual appeal. motion controls were a worldwide sensation for those first few years. everyone and their grandma bought a wii for it.

No, my friend. You're comment is ignorant. Even if the Wii had the same casual appeal, but it was priced remotely close to the 360 or PS3, it wouldn't have sold as well as it did. One of the main points of a products health is it's price. Obviously, if it has an attractive (cheap) price, it's going to sell more than a product that's more expensive, but in the same genre. Especially in such a terrible economy, the Wii was a nice family-oriented console at a family-oriented price. The X360 and PS3 had the Kinect and Moove, but they were both expensive investments to add to the already expensive consoles.

Of course that will happen. You might want to look at what happens when new consoles launched.

It takes a year to THREE before the new console sells more than the OLD console.

Bigger library and cheaper.

On top of all this, supply is always constrained. That's why people wait in lines for new consoles.

It probably will outsell the 720 and PS4, it's almost guaranteed to.

Why?

Because new consoles always mean shortages. The more advanced the systems is, and of course the later the launch date (we don't know exactly when it is launched..if it's september or october then it will probably have an extra million or so sold during this year), the fewer sold.

What's weird is it seems like everyone forgets what happened last time and in the vast majority of new console launches.

1. Constrained console supply negatively impacting sales
2. Not many software titles the first year
3. Competition from earlier models
4. Not just competition, but generally the PS3 and 360 will also outsell the PS4 and 720.
5. Not always but if there's problems with a console, online service, etc...then this is the time they strike.

I'm sure there's more, but I just wanted to list the things off the top of my head.

The Wii U will outsell the PS4 and 720. The 360/PS3 will continue to outsell them all.

PC's will get the GTX 700 series and the midrange PC will be capable of 2.5-4.5x that of the new consoles (depending on what console you're judging against), but will sell the least. But at $399, if you have a five year old computer or newer you built, then it's the most bang for the buck power wise.

Overall bang for your buck will rest with the Wii U.

Not gonna happen. Wii U will definitely fail to meet its holiday 2012 sales, PS4/720 will each at least match the Wii u launch sales. Not even a price cut will push millions of Wii U units so quickly. I doubt even a Mario Kart or Smash Bros will do anything massive. They didn't for the Gamecube...

The Wii was a pointless piece of gimmicky crap that we all had as a second console because it was cheap. The WiiU will be the same. Good news for Nintendo, but for us gamers on the internet will probably not care.

The thing that always amuses me when people compare the Wii's sales to the PS3 and Xbox 360 is that they believe that means the Wii was a better console. Now, there isn't a definitive way to tell which console is the best, but for the average core gamer the Wii is (truly no disrespect) a joke compared to the other two consoles.

So, without the gimmick can the Wii U outsell the PS4 and/or NextBox? It's possible, but I just don't understand how it would be possible...especially thinking it will outsell the PS4 (as the rumors for the NextBox ARE troubling).

The Wii sold more than the other two consoles, but I'd gladly own either of those over the Wii.

I like Nintendo for some of their 1st party stuff and will probably get a Wii U eventually for that (especially for Monolith Soft)... but anyone who thinks Wii U will be as successful as the Wii was, let alone more successful than PS4, is kidding themselves for no real reason. Enjoy your Wii U if that's your thing, but stop wasting time trying to convince anyone that it's going to do better than PS4, because it won't even come close.

Developers aren't excited about Wii U and neither are very many gamers. I'll probably get one because I don't care, I know it will have some good games that won't be available elsewhere. The long term potential of the system is not high though. No one is going to choose Wii U over PS4 for multi platform games.
