Naughty Dog Had To Remind Research Agency That Females Exist

The Last of Us is shaping up quite nicely. It looks like it’s going to have stunning graphics and an engaging narrative that’ll introduce us to characters that are well-rounded and that we care about.

To help ensure that this is the case, Naughty Dog (the developers) decided to do a little focus-testing of their game. This is basically where they hire a company to get some feedback on their game from people as they play it. Except, this company didn’t want people, they wanted to use only men. Thats pretty f*ckin stupid of them. What kind of focus group agency wouldn't test the games with women? They obviously don't know the industry too well and probably shouldn't be testing for it.

... why does the gender of the person testing it even matter to begin with?
KwietStorm  +   376d ago
Different backgrounds and genders is pretty much the whole point of focus group research.

Is there womens rights in video game testing too now ?
KwietStorm  +   376d ago
Games exist in the same world all of us do.

Yes. They do. Women have rights no matter their line of work. You know, like a man does.

Secondly, this is nothing to do with 'testing' the game. This is 'focus testing', where the reaction that the player has is measured. This is done to find out what people like and don't like. Very common in films. Increasingly common in games.

They didn't think to get women's opinion on the game. Which is silly considering how many women play games. You'd be ignoring half your audience by doing so. Hence the story got written.

well, if the focus of game is on the little girl, then how do male testers respond? Immaturely? sexist? maybe these are the kind of things they are looking at since more gamers are males, then again Research Agency shouldn't totally disregard females. It's nice of ND to be caring and pointing out what is wrong with this country sometimes.

So. I've only watched the trailer and haven't really been following this game but I will buy it and from what I saw, I'll be a little irked if what I think is gonna happen story wise. I think I figured it out ( maybe not ) from that story trailer but who cares.

My question is and I dont know if " Ellie " is a playable character so i could be wrong but why have women test a game where you play as a male character just too see or hear a " teenage girls " story that follows him a long?

I know there are women who test, play and design games but there seems to be an underlying issue at hand. Like alcohol, drug abuse, divorce, rape? Real world issues that happen when mankind has no morals left except the will to survive.

Guess we'll find out.

There are more women in the story than Ellie, and the point to having women test it aswell is to get their feedback not only on the game itself but the representation of women in general. You got to remember most dev teams are dominantly male, so they might not have the most accurate female point of view. Thus why it is important to have female play testers
Morgue  +   376d ago
I realized that but my point was there must be something else going on. Wether it's trying to expand your market or bring about experiences that a woman can relate to more than a man. Hence. " having their feedback "

This game will make you question a lot of things wether your male or female.

Like how far would you go to survive, could you trust someone with your life based on split second decision? Would you be able to trust someone if they did something to you but know they're your only hope?

I'm curious too see how this game plays out and that's why I haven't been following it. Although I'm not really thrilled about the " infected " people thing.
