Is the Wii U a Companion Console

During the Game Developers Conference, Kotaku Editor Stephen Totilo shot a question at the co-founder of Epic Games, Mark Rein. He asked him whether the new Unreal Engine 4, the new middleware solution likely to be the cornerstone of many next-gen titles, would run on the Wii U. The answer was a laugh, and a “No,” supplemented by the explanation that the Wii U had Unreal Engine 3 games already running on it, but if individual purchasers of UE4 wanted, they could certainly try on their own to get the engine running on Nintendo’s machine. (Dev, Industry, Nintendo, Tech, Wii U)

We never see articles like this. Oh we saw around 5 yesterday?

That depends on preference, doesn't it?

I don't see why it wouldn't be. This generation I had the Wii alongside my primary console, I have a feeling when I inevitably grab a Wii because I'm a weak Super Smash Brothers whore, it'll be right alongside the PS4.

last generation I had a Wii for my Nintendo games and a 360 for the multiplats and MS exclusives. This time around I think I will have a PS4 to go along with my Wii U..

Best of both worlds if you ask me...

Nintendo Exclusives - check
Sony Exclusives - check
Multiplats who ignore the Wii U - check

I'm a happy little gamer..

I initially had a 360, now it's a PS3 for my multiplats.

I'm one of those folks who thought it would be different for Wii U, but sadly it's turning out to be exactly the opposite case. Either way, like you said; best of both worlds.

Did he really laugh when asked about UE4? That's not cool.
PopRocks359  +   379d ago
He says he laughed at the question because that was never part of their plan or something I think. My guess is people got on his case because when he made that statement it was not really clear.

A lot of folks around here interpreted it as "he's laughing because the Wii U can't support it because it's weak" which wasn't really the case in context. They just were never behind Wii U because it's not as powerful as the new consoles coming out and Epic is pretty big on graphics historically speaking.

Not as powerful, in that it is weaker. That's why he laughed. I like nintendo but what they're cannibalizing their own product. A weak launch, with weak titles, with a long wait for quality first party titles. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it.

As a long time Nintendo fan, who loves Nintendo games/consoles, but actually own every console this gen and a monster PC.. I gotta say Nintendo consoles(not handhelds)have been companion consoles for a while. Not because of power or quality but mostly because of the usual third party situation that always plagues nintendo consoles.

On the other hand i cannot imagine just getting 1 other console and not get the nintendo one each gen, i would miss the exclusives too much.

So yeah, it is a companion console, but so are the rest, they all have a healthy relationship with each other(except with my wallet, lol)

Turn the company over to me and i'll usher in a much needed revival for the company. One that would make it contender in the video game market, and not just a company skating by on it's previous success and handheld sells.

Nintendo is a Companonion console for the majority of gamers now a days. Most people will buy Nintendo console and then and XBOX or PS, Which almost seems more like Nintendo is main console and the other are companions....But since that perception would make Nintendo the console the console of choice, it doesnt sit well with those that are considered "Core gamers" so Nintendo is the Companion. I dont know many peolpe that get MS and PS consoles to accompany each other.

I am not a fan of Nintendo games (STFU its my preference) so unless there's several 3rd party/2nd party exclusives that interest me on the Wii U i am not getting one since all multiplatform games will be superior on the PS4.

For example the only 2nd party exclusive that i am interested in is Bayonetta 2 and that´s not enough to justify the purchase of any console.
