Thief 4 Trailer: Still Remarkably Unlike Assassin’s Creed

"Despite the prerequisite freaking out from the fans about how Garrett is clearly a ninja now – because gymnast = hired killer, apparently – having him go out of his way to race around the guard and escape shows an emphasis on non-violent play."

Mariel Hurd talks about the new Thief 4 trailer, how the series has always given you the option of playing violently, and why fears about it being another Assassin's Creed are largely unfounded.

"What actually we see in the new trailer is a sneaky Garrett who avoids killing the guard currently trying to slit his throat, who slinks backward into the shadows and moves delicately in his supple-soled shoes." (PC, PS4, Thief, Xbox One)

That's just the thing, though: you don't need to have killing in a game for it to be good. The option is there, but I think it is more of a challenge (and reward) for the developer to put more options to get around a situation than for them to put more options to get through a situation, if you know what I mean.

That's a great way of putting it.

And Thief's always been really good at doing that, all throughout the series. It's one of the reasons they're really fun to revisit.

Thats great and all but why not do both? Leaves more choices out there. You make it sound like its impossible for developers to put more options to get around a situation and to put more options to get through a situation.

Hah, I phrased myself pretty badly there. I sort of rolled 'or shoot everyone with broadhead arrows, that works too' in as an option automatically, but didn't say so. Sorry!

You're absolutely right: having (multiple) violent options is essential in Thief because not everyone wants to be a super-sneaky bastard. While you should never be able to hurl yourself into brawls and come out without a scratch - it doesn't work with the character gameplay, or atmosphere - there should be a fair few ways for you to kill folks or knock them out.

As there always has been, thank god.

Good.

I can't believe that people would actually go so far as to claim that the game is 'just another AC' after seeing some brief acrobatics. God forbid that a MASTER THIEF be agile...

Anyways, I enjoy how they give the choice to be lethal and non-lethal while still being able to complete the objective regardless of your choice. It just gives the game more depth. Plus, it makes you want to go back and replay it just so that you can use the method that you avoided using in your first playthrough.

The two games are not remotely alike. One you are an Assassin the other you are a Thief.... A thief is ment to still crap not run around killing everything in site....

Sorry, I'm just so cynical about any stealth games this gen. I've already been disappointed by Agent 47 and Sam Fisher. Plus, Thief 3 could have been better anyway.

More interesting and challenging than killing people indiscriminately is accomplish a mission without been detected, like Deus Ex: HR or MGS series. Killing is for aficionados, Sneaking is for Pro's.
