Final Fantasy Soundtrack Hits Third Place in Classic FM Hall of Fame

The Final Fantasy soundtrack has managed the impossible this year, beating out the likes of Beethoven and Mozart to come third in the Classic FM Hall of Fame for 2013. It managed to jump thirteen places over last year and stands both as a testament to the dedication of gamers to this particular body of music, and to a changing attitude towards the medium. (Culture, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III - OUYA, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X)

A fantastic achievement for a deeply under-appreciated medium.

What interested me the most was the reaction of people.

Some of them out and out dismissed it as "video game incidental not worthy of this list" blah blah blah. These were generally the people who then went on to say "Films are in, but they're popular," so they obviously didn't realize just how big a business this is.

But generally, the worst reaction was "It's not for me, but it obviously deserves its place." The best, and more common than I thought, was "I'd never heard this before, and I'm glad I got to."

As a group, we're often led to believe that society looks down on gamers and on games as a whole. That's because the news likes to run so many anti-gaming stories. But then you read something like this and see people's reaction, and you realize most people really don't care either way, and at best are willing to learn more about the medium if they're exposed to it.
