Super PolyPixel - One of the best represented games on the PAX East floor was Capcom’s Remember Me. There was always a healthy line waiting to play it. Our very own Rebekah played the demo and recapped her thoughts on it here. It seems strange now to think that just a little while ago, publishers did not want to pick up the title simply because it starred a female.
Seems a little silly, doesn’t it? Maybe not to you. Or to me. But it’s the truth. Publishers are very wary of having a female-helmed game because of what BioWare writer David Gaider calls “accepted industry wisdom.” The status quo. “The things that the industry decides are treated as incontrovertibly true until someone else comes along and proves them definitively wrong in a way that we cannot ignore.” Gaider goes on to compare it to how everyone thought that EverQuest was the standard for MMOs. It’s maximum number of subscribers was the “accepted industry wisdom” and no one thought anything could ever beat it, until World of Warcraft came along.
