I Confess: Half-Life 2

Having never finished Half-Life 2, Justin Lacey asks, "Should I play through Half-Life 2 any time soon or is it better for me to leave its legacy a mystery?” (Half-Life 2, PC, PS3, World of Warcraft, Xbox 360)

More now than ever HL2 is a game of its time just like the first.

Were someone experienced in modern shooters to pick up HL1 they wouldn't see what was so great. At the time, there wasn't anything like it. Same with HL2.

So it really depends on one's context.
